“Pittsburgh Imam Fouad ElBayly: Ayaan Hirsi Ali should be put to death
(PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Imam Fouad ElBayly, president of the Johnstown Islamic Center, was among those who objected to Hirsi Ali’s appearance.

“She has been identified as one who has defamed the faith. If you come into the faith, you must abide by the laws, and when you decide to defame it deliberately, the sentence is death,” said ElBayly, who came to the U.S. from Egypt in 1976.

Hirsi Ali, an atheist, has been critical of many Muslim beliefs, particularly on subjects of sexual morality, the treatment of women and female genital mutilation. In her essay “The Caged Virgin,” she also wrote of punishment, noting that “a Muslim’s relationship with God is one of fear.”

“Our God demands total submission. He rewards you if you follow His rules meticulously. He punishes you cruelly if you break His rules, both on earth, with illness and natural disasters, and in the hereafter, with hellfire,” she wrote....

Although ElBayly believes a death sentence is warranted for Hirsi Ali, he stressed that America is not the jurisdiction where such a crime should be punished. Instead, Hirsi Ali should be judged in a Muslim country after being given a trial, he added.

“If it is found that a person is mentally unstable, or a child or disabled, there should be no punishment,” he said. “It’s a very merciful religion if you try to understand it.”

Zahida Chaudhary, a member of the education council and education secretary at the Muslim Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh in Monroeville, insisted that Islam is a peaceful religion.”

U.S. military satellites to be reviewed
UPI ^ | 04/22/07

Posted on 04/22/2007 5:21:34 PM PDT by nypokerface

WASHINGTON April 22 (UPI) — A top U.S. Air Force official has ordered a review of all current military satellites to determine if they are vulnerable to attack.

Air Force Gen. T. Michael “Buzz” Moseley ordered the wide-ranging review in March after China detonated one of its weather satellites, prompting concern that the Asian nation may be creating anti-satellite weaponry, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

China never officially explained the military action and a large field of debris remains in orbit because of the satellite’s destruction.

“What I’m looking for is just a better way to think through the challenge, now that other people have a capability to kill a satellite,” Moseley said of the review. “It is a contested domain now. I’ve asked a bit of an open-ended question.”

The Times said Moseley has asked for initial results by June and has said changes would become a necessity if the study’s findings are troubling.

“You have a choice: You can either defend the machines or you build something that flies higher and faster,” he said of the nation’s satellites.

“VIRGINIA TECH MASSACRE
Death toll limited before campus gun ban
5 years ago, shooter subdued by armed students”
Posted: April 22, 2007
1:00 a.m. Eastern

© 2007 WorldNetDaily.com
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “On Jan. 16, 2002, Peter Odighizuwa, a 43-year-old student from Nigeria, walked into the Appalachian School of Law offices of Dean Anthony Sutin, 42, a former acting assistant U.S. attorney, and professor Thomas Blackwell, 41, and opened fire with a .380 ACP semi-automatic handgun – shooting them at close range.

Also killed in the same building was student Angela Denise Dales, 33. Three others were wounded.

As soon as the gunfire erupted, two students acting independently of one another, Tracy Bridges and Mikael Gross, ran to their vehicles to retrieve firearms. Gross, an off-duty police officer in his home state of North Carolina, got his 9mm pistol and body armor. Bridges got out his .357 Magnum.

Bridges and Gross went back to the building where the shots were heard and as Odighizuwa exited, they approached from different angles. Bridges yelled for him to drop his weapon and the shooter was subdued by several unarmed students.

Gross went back to his car and got handcuffs to detain the shooter until police arrived.

Most news reports of the incident failed to mention the presence of two armed students and their role in subduing the shooter, saying only that he was tackled by bystanders.

Odighizuwa was tried for the murders and sentenced to multiple life terms in prison.”

Russia, Iran sign nuclear plant protocol
AP via Yahoo! ^ | April 22, 2007

Posted on 04/22/2007 9:01:33 PM PDT by jdm

MOSCOW - Tehran agreed Sunday to a financing plan for the remaining construction of a nuclear power plant near Iran’s southern port of Bushehr, the state-run Russian company leading the project said.
Amid Iran’s defiance of international pressure to halt uranium enrichment activities, Russia earlier this year delayed the launch of the plant, which had been set for September, saying Tehran was behind scheduled on payments.

The international community fears Iran could be seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran insists its uranium enrichment is meant only for nuclear energy purposes.

Iranian officials denied any payment delays under the $1 billion contract and accused Russia of caving in to Western pressure. Moscow has cultivated close ties with Iran but has supported limited U.N. sanctions against Tehran recently, while warding off U.S. efforts to level harsher punishments.

Irina Yesipova, a spokeswoman for the Russian company Atomstroiexport, suggested the protocol signed Sunday in Moscow marked strong progress, but that some issues still remained and more talks would be held next month.

“If the financing plan is successfully implemented, a portion of the questions on the financing of Iran’s first atomic power station plant will be removed,” she said.

Russia and Iran have had warm ties, with Russian President Vladimir Putin seeking to maintain profitable relationships with other nations and counter U.S. global clout.

But Iran has irritated Moscow by turning a cold shoulder to its efforts to resolve the persistent confrontation over its nuclear program, including an offer to enrich uranium for Iranian plants in Russia, which could provide Iran with nuclear fuel while easing concerns it might develop weapons.

Russia and China joined the rest of the U.N. Security Council last month in voting to impose new sanctions — the second set of penalties in three months against Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment.

Russia starts developing new strategic bomber
Xinhua,China ^ | April 22, 2007

Russia starts developing new strategic bomber

Russia has started to develop a new type of strategic bomber amid Russia-U.S. disputes on anti- missile system deployment in central Europe, the Itar-Tass news agency reported on Saturday.

The research work has been launched and the new generation of aircraft is expected to be put into service in 10 years, Itar-Tass said, quoting Deputy Long-Range Aviation Commander Anatoly Zhikharev as saying.

The report did not give further details of the new missile carrier.

“The bomber will be capable to take off from any airfield, to carry nuclear and highly accurate conventional weapons such as missiles and bombs and to overcome any anti-ballistic missiles defense systems,” the Interfax quoted Zhikharev as saying.

Washington proposed in January installing parts of its anti- missile shield in central Europe, including some interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic.

Washington said the missile defense system is not targeted at Russia, but the sensitive plans nevertheless have drawn sharp criticism from Moscow.

“Government mulls issuing Islamic bonds”
Mon Apr 23, 2007 7:27 AM BST

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “LONDON (Reuters) - The government will conduct a feasibility study into issuing Islamic bonds in a bid to bolster London’s standing as a centre for Islamic finance, Treasury minister Ed Balls will say in a speech on Monday.

In a step towards issuing the first sharia-compliant UK government bond, the Treasury and the Debt Management Office will look into the cost and potential benefits of the government issuing Islamic financial instruments in the sterling market, Balls will tell a Financial Services Authority conference.

The results of the study will be published in the Autumn of this year.

“I believe there are great potential advantages for the UK government issuing sharia-compliant government debt,” Balls will say, according to excerpts of his speech seen by Reuters.”

“Agents: No confidence in border chief”
By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
April 23, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The leaders of the U.S. Border Patrol’s rank-and-file agents have unanimously voted a no-confidence resolution against Chief David V. Aguilar, citing, among other things, his willingness to believe the “perjured allegations” of criminal aliens over his own agents.

The resolution won endorsement from all 100 top leaders of the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC), which represents all 11,000 of the U.S. Border Patrol’s nonsupervisory field agents, and targeted Chief Aguilar’s lack of support for field agents, several of whom have been prosecuted on civil rights grounds involving arrests of illegal aliens and drug-smuggling suspects.”
