Terrorism Suspect Released: Globe
Josh Pringle
Friday, April 13, 2007

An alleged al-Qaida-linked suspect is now living under strict house arrest in his Toronto apartment.

The Globe and Mail reports that after spending seven years in detention under a security certificate, Mohamed Zeki Mahjoub has been released.

The Egyptian-born man allegedly once ran a Sudanese farming operation for Osama Bin Laden

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day told the Globe and Mail that he’d rather see people like Mahjoub stay in detention.

Article snippet: “The four stepdaughters had been sentenced and received 80 lashes each, it added.”

Man to be stoned for stepdaughter sex

This man richly deserves punishment, if not capital punishment, but this story is noteworthy for several reasons. First, for its acknowledgment that the modern, moderate UAE, with which so many companies (from Halliburton to Marvel Comics) are so eager to do business, follows Sharia. Second, for its acknowledgment that Sharia includes stoning for adultery, which will usually get you an “Islamophobia” charge for pointing out. And third, because the stepdaughters are getting lashed — for what? Their punishment stems from the same mentality that gives rise to honor killings.

From Reuters, with thanks to JE:

A PAKISTANI man faces death by stoning in the United Arab Emirates for committing adultery with four of his stepdaughters.
In the first case of its kind in the UAE, the Federal Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence issued by an Islamic sharia court in the emirate of Ajman, the English-language Gulf News reported.

Police arrested the man, identified only as Abdul Aziz, in 2005 after his youngest and fifth stepdaughter reported the case when he refused to let her marry a local man, it said.

The man, who had 11 children from illicit relationships with his four stepdaughters, admitted his guilt but said he was the father of only some of the children, Gulf News said.

The four stepdaughters had been sentenced and received 80 lashes each, it added.

Like most Arab states, the UAE implements Islamic sharia laws, but rarely executes convicted criminals.

“Islamist Group Denies Report of Hoyer Invitation to Visit Congress”
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com Managing Editor
April 13, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - The Muslim Brotherhood has denied an Egyptian newspaper report saying that a visiting delegation led by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had invited members of the radical Islamist group to visit the U.S. Congress.

“These reports are totally groundless,” Muslim Brotherhood executive bureau member Mohamed Mursi said in a statement posted on the organization’s website.

Mursi said the group’s stance on dialogue with any foreign official was that “this dialogue should be held through sound diplomatic methods in the presence of a representative from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.”

The independent Egyptian daily al-Mesryoon reported Thursday that the Hoyer delegation had invited Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Mahdi Akef and several other officials to visit the U.S. next month and address lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Hoyer twice last week met representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood, a group that spawned Hamas and supports the establishment of a Muslim caliphate.

The Maryland Democrat’s office played down the encounters — at the Egyptian parliament and, later, at the U.S. ambassador’s residence — saying they were not “personal” meetings but had taken place in the context of meetings with Egyptian legislators.

Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, who heads the Brotherhood’s parliamentary bloc, was one of those who attended the two events and met with the American delegation. The Muslim Brotherhood is banned but tolerated in Egypt, and its 88 members in the 454-seat lower house of parliament call themselves “independents.”

Hoyer spokeswoman Stacey Bernards on Friday denied the al-Mesryoon report, saying she had “no knowledge of any invitation to members of the Muslim Brotherhood” and that she believed the report to be incorrect.”

“Judge frees ‘senior’ terrorism suspect”

COLIN FREEZE
From Saturday’s Globe and Mail

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Egyptian terrorism Mahmoud Jaballah was released from a detention centre in Kingston and will be placed under an extreme form of house arrest. He is the second terrorism suspect freed in two days, after the release of Mohamed Zeki Mahjoub on Thursday.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “She says the suspect’s late-1990s phone records have never been adequately explained: “Although provided with the opportunity to address the 72 calls to Yemen, the 47 calls to Azerbaijan, the 75 calls to London, England [to an alleged al-Qaeda front] . . . and the 20 calls to the United Kingdom, Yemen, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan within a two-day time frame, Mr. Jaballah either failed to do so or was evasive.”

The substance of these calls placed from Canada have never been spelled out in any public Canadian court proceeding. The judge has access to classified evidence.

But this damning intelligence was weighed against the fact that Mr. Jaballah has spent six consecutive years in custody without ever being charged with a crime. In granting bail, the Federal Court largely deferred to a recent Supreme Court decision that suggests that the threat posed by terrorists diminishes with the amount of time they spend in custody.”

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Sat Apr 14 2007 01:41:44 GMT-0700.

ALGERIA

March 22, 2007

This Travel Warning is being updated to alert Americans to recent terrorist attacks directed against foreigners in Algeria. The threat from terrorism in many areas of the country continues to pose a significant security risk. This supersedes the Travel Warning issued on December 20, 2006.

The Department of State urges U.S. citizens who travel to Algeria to evaluate carefully the risk posed to their personal safety. Sustained small-scale terrorist attacks including bombings, false roadblocks, kidnappings, ambushes, and assassinations occur regularly. Additionally, a bomb attack targeted a bus transporting foreign workers of a U.S. company in the western part of Algiers in December 2006, and in March 2007, terrorists carried out a bomb attack against a bus transporting Russian and Ukrainian workers near Ain Defla.

The Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens avoid overland travel in the mountainous northern part of the country, and particularly in the area stretching from Algiers east to the Tunisian border.

The U.S. Government considers the potential threat to U.S. Embassy personnel assigned to Algiers sufficiently serious to require them to live and work under strict security restrictions. These practices limit, and may occasionally prevent, the movement of U.S. Embassy officials in certain areas of the country. The Government of Algeria requires U.S. Embassy personnel traveling outside the province of Algiers or to the Casbah within Algiers to seek permission and to have a security escort. Travel to the military zone established around the Hassi Messaoud oil center requires Government of Algeria authorization. U.S. Government personnel are permitted by the Embassy to move freely in many areas in the center of Algiers, but are required to maintain prudent security practices. Travel by personnel to areas of the city outside this zone requires prior coordination with the Embassy’s Regional Security Office. American visitors are encouraged to contact the Embassy’s Consular Section for the most recent safety and security information concerning travel in the city of Algiers.

The Department of State cautions Americans who reside or travel in Algeria to take prudent security measures while in the country, including making provisions for reliable and experienced logistical support. This support should include being met upon arrival and accompanied for the duration of the visit. Visitors should ensure that tour operators and host organizations perform all notifications and coordination with Algerian police and security officials during their stay. Visitors to Algeria are advised to stay only in hotels where adequate security is provided. All visitors to Algeria should remain alert and adhere to prudent security practices such as avoiding predicable travel patterns and maintaining a low profile.

American citizens in or traveling to Algeria also are urged to register and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Algeria at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Algiers or on our travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/. The Embassy is located at 4 Chemin Cheikh Bachir El-Ibrahimi, B.P. 408 (Alger-Gare) 16000, in the capital city of Algiers. The Embassy can be reached at telephone [213] (21) 691-425; [213] (21) 691-186; fax [213] (21) 693-979; or email ConsularAlgiers@state.gov. U.S. citizens who require emergency services may telephone the Embassy at [213] (21) 691-255. Up-to-date information on security conditions as well as general information concerning Algeria and the U.S. Embassy is also available on the Embassy’s website http://algiers.usembassy.gov/.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet website at http://travel.state.gov where the Consular Information Sheet for Algeria and the current Worldwide Caution and Middle East and North Africa Public Announcements can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or, for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

U.S. Commander: Terror Attack in Baghdad Strengthens Resolve

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 13, 2007 – Yesterday’s terrorist attack on the Iraqi parliament that killed one member of Parliament and wounded 22 other people has only strengthened the resolve of the government of Iraq and its Council of Representatives, a top U.S. commander in Iraq said Army Lt. Gen. Ray Odierno today.

Odierno, the commander of Multinational Corps Iraq, said the attack on parliament and a suicide car bomb on the Sarafiya bridge earlier in the day show the nature of the insurgents.

“The terrorist bombs do not differentiate between children and adults, women and men, Sunnis and Shiia, Arabs and Kurds,” he said in a teleconference with Pentagon reporters. “Those killed and wounded are guilty of nothing other than being Iraqi.”

Terrorists would rather wreak havoc and destruction than contribute to building the new Iraq, he said. Blowing up a bridge that contributed to the well-being of thousands or killing a representative of the people is better in their eyes than building a modern state or developing the institutions of government.

“But at the end of day, for us to be successful here, it is the Iraqi people who must impose their will,” he said.

Troops of the Iraqi Interior Ministry have taken over security duties at the parliament. Iraqi officials are investigating how a suicide bomber gained entrance to one of the most secure buildings in the country, Odierno said. The Council of Representatives held a special session earlier today to express their outrage over the attack.

The general said that no one knows for sure who launched the attack in Baghdad’s heavily fortified International Zone. “We’ve … seen the reports that al Qaeda in Iraq have in fact claimed it,” he said. “My guess is, based on past events, they were probably somewhat involved, but we don’t know for sure yet.”

He said al Qaeda in Iraq is trying to undermine the feeling of security Iraqis are developing as a result of the Baghdad security plan.

“It’s not about one or two single events, it’s about an overall feeling of security you get in your neighborhood,” he said. “And we’re tackling this neighborhood by neighborhood.

“It’s allowing the people to understand that they feel protected inside their neighborhood first, the fact that their kids can go to school, they can go to the hospital, they can go down to the markets,” he continued. “That’s what we’re working on. We’re still not there yet even in those areas. In some areas we are in Baghdad, they do feel comfortable. There’s other areas they don’t yet. And that’s a day-to-day operation.”

Al Qaeda wants to undermine security, Odierno said.

“They want to try to incite chaos,” he said. “What we have to do is every single day work hard with Iraqi security forces to provide the sense of security neighborhood by neighborhood, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
