Young, Gay Christians, On a Bumpy Bus Ride
The Washington Post ^ | 4/13/07 | Hanna Rosin

Posted on 04/13/2007 5:58:24 AM PDT by 4BoysMom

Even on American highways crowded with giant family cars, buses are still big enough to make a point. ...

The one driving down Route 7 in Virginia yesterday was purplish on one side and orange sunset on the other. In huge letters it said "Social Justice for Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People." On the highway, fellow drivers either honked and waved or threw Coke cans. In Sioux City, Iowa, someone spray-painted the bus with "Fag, God doesn't love you."

The 25 "equality riders" from a group called Soulforce have roughly followed certain routes of the Freedom Riders who battled Southern segregation in the 1960s.

Instead of bus stations and restaurants, they stop at conservative evangelical colleges they say discriminate against homosexuals. Last week it was Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. Yesterday it was Patrick Henry College, a seven-year-old evangelical institution in Purcellville, Va., with grand political ambitions. It was founded by Michael Farris, a leader in the home-schooling movement.

A Patrick Henry press release announcing the visit called them a "traveling group of homosexual activists" and "false teachers." Many of the riders come from evangelical families and attended colleges like the ones they visit. At some point they decided that, despite what their church told them, they could be Christian and gay.

At the colleges they try to get this message across to the students. Sometimes they are allowed on campus and sometimes not. When they do meet up with students the conversations proceed awkwardly. One question: Were you abused as a child? Another: How exactly does gay attraction work? Angel answers a lot of questions about which bathroom he uses and what physical "parts" he has.

Another attempt to undermine the Bible, Patrick Henry College, and morals. I think it is very sad how our society has been so awash in immorality, and yet starved for truth.

We have gotten to a place in many circles where we cherry pick the Bible for the verses we like, and ignore the ones we don't. We make God in our own image rather than worshipping Him for who He is, in spirit and truth. The result is young people who have the misconception that their sinful lifestyle is consistent with their faith. This is not just true in the homosexual community, there are plenty of other examples of sinful behavior that is accepted and pushed forth for 'approval'.

"Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.... ...Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them." Romans 1:28 & 32

My son attends PHC and was interviewed for this article. I am obviously a very proud mama.

Can you be a Christian in good faith AND be a prostitute or an adulterer who LOVES that lifestyle?

They seek to celebrate their sins, not be ashamed of them.

We are all sinners. Go forth and sin no more.

They started off at Regent College in Va Beach some time ago. As it is a private college, they no sooner stepped foot on the pavement when the Police escorted them from the premesis for Trespassing.

I Corinthians 6:9-10

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

Pretty much tells you what God’s stand is on that. You can’t continue to live in sin and obtain the kingdom of God.

True, but whether God loves them or will forgive them is up to Him. People who try to speak for God are treading on thin ice, as are people who openly engage in a sinful lifestyle.

Well, one cannot be a Christian and live a lifestyle that is an abomination to God. We are all sinners, true, but there is a difference between messing up at times, and continually living in a sinful lifestyle.

Often referred to as a "cafeteria Christian"

I wonder which one of the bus's passengers sprayed that on the bus.

Actually, I wonder if this incident is documented in any way and not just a made-up tale.

You’re exactly right...

We should be ashamed of our sin...not PROUD of it.

The price paid for our sins was so great that to have any response to sin but shame makes very doubtful our understanding of God and His great grace and mercy towards us.

My son was videotaping the event for the school yesterday and heard the protesters discussing with the police what the arrest would entail. That was planned before they arrived.

[Robin] Reynolds [who organized the Patrick Henry stop] made a brief statement calling herself a "child of God, a follower of Christ and a lesbian."

For those of you who have wondered what an oxymoron is, here is the perfect example.

Far more appropriate would have been "He died for your sins too." or "Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more."

...or in another vein, "Silly Faggot. D*cks are for Chicks."

Cheers!

God's mercy and forgivness is neverending. Witness the story of thre Prodigal son. The only sin that is not forgivable is against the Holy Spirit...........

Bah. Someone should have painted (professionally) on the side "Edwards for President '08"...(remember Ann Coulter?)

Cheers!

People who accurately convey the content of scripture are not trying "to speak for God", though. They are simply following his word - and his law.

I don’t think you’re allowed to say “moron,” even with a prefix.
