Fortunately, in that case an off-duty Virginia deputy sheriff, got his gun from his vehicle, got the drop on the shooter, disarmed the shooter and then some fellow students restrained the shooter until authorities arrived.

Beautiful sentiment from the Edwards family. I love that old hymn

We are simply heartbroken by the deaths and injuries suffered at
Virginia Tech. We know what an unspeakable, life-changing moment
this is for these families and how, in this moment, it is hard to feel
anything but overwhelming grief, much less the love and support around
you. But the love and support is there. We pray that these families,
these students, and the entire Virginia Tech community know that they
are being embraced by a nation. There is a Methodist hymn that gave
us solace in such a moment as this, and we repeat its final verse here,
in hopes it will help these families, as it helped us:

In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity;
In our doubt there is believing, in our life, eternity,
In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,
Unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

Our dearest wish is that this day could start again, with the promise of
these young people alive. Knowing that cannot be, our prayer is for
God’s grace and whatever measure of peace can be reached on this
terrible day.

John and Elizabeth Edwards

Could there possibly be a softer target than a university?? You send the police to one side and then target the building on the other side and you are just murdering unarmed and unprotected kids. Guaranteed these kids had no military training to do maximum murder. This was planned for a long time and likely AQ.

Pray for W and Va Tech

There was a cell phone video that recorded the shots and it was from a “student” named Jamal Barghouti. At first, I thought he was the cornered perp. I’m fairly certain of the name.

Thank you for serving in Iraq.

When you enter law school, work on your vocabulary. Stooping to petty name-calling is not worthy of someone with your credentials.

And you don’t need to alert me. I neither fear you nor consider you a troll, just an ill-informed Freeper.

anything is worth checking, but as a general matter, it’s worth as much as if an American named Johnson filmed a bombing in Israel and people started saying “Well, there’s a Johnson who was President, and a Johnson who was a famous basketball player, and a Johnson who said “verrry interesting . . . .”

It looks like he’s been on that site for years. Doesn’t seem like a Chinese national who has been here for 8 months. I doubt it is him...but who knows!

No problem. I don’t know how to reply to mail messages or what they are, but I thank you for saying what you did. Today was incredibly interesting - reading posts on here - so many articulate, intelligent, thought-provoking posts.

I doubt whether they ever do full background checks on student visa applicants (unless they come from Iran).

That is a little disturbing.

What type of visas were the 911 terrorist issued?

I've been through student visa process myself (I'm an Eastern European who used to study in US) and consular officials spend 2-5 minutes on each application. What they check is just the basic economic background. Whether the person has money to pay for studies, does not appear likely to stay in US illegally afterwards or does not have obvious red flags of some other type. They might also run some quick computerized checks against databases of known terrorists etc. behind the scenes but I doubt whether they do more.

Google says that after 9/11, they've added more background checks for citizens of most (or all) Muslim countries but if this person was from China, his experience was probably like mine.

This is international. What is the big difference between broadcasting the cutting off of heads for the world to see and broadcasting the gunshots that killed and maimed numerous young students.

Because there's a 99.999% chance that he was doing what any other kid would do in the same situation with a cellphone capable of doing that would.

It doesn't send any signal back to his masters, whomever you might think that would be.

Where is the evidence of a Chinese/Palestinian terrorist group? Or that either group would gain by shooting up an American university?

This kind of speculation drives me nuts.

May I suggest going back a couple thousand post before you get flamed.

Both points of view have been done to death on this thread.

Not sure how old you are but there was a time when “nutty” students and teachers would bring their guns to class.

Are you admitting todays college students have devolved so much into immaturity and ignorance that high school students years ago far surpass them in manners and intelligence?
