indeed, the timeline does not make sense - the same gunmen traveled across the campus and couldn’t be found for 2 hours, and then went to the next place to start the shooting spree?

You are quite correct.

Gunman kills 21 on Virginia Tech campus before being killed

By The Associated Press

Injured occupants are carried out of Norris Hall at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Monday, April 16, 2007. Shootings in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech resulted in multiple fatalities, police say.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people and wounding another 21 before he was killed, police said.

“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said university president Charles Steger.

The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

One student was killed in a dorm and the others were killed in the classroom, Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.

After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed and classes canceled through Tuesday.

“There’s just a lot of commotion. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on,” said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.

Virginia Military Institute has the cadet corps. Virginia Tech is the university with an engineering focus. Two different schools.

I beg to differ. I was a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, E-94.

VMI also has a cadet corps, but Tech's coexists beside the school's civilian population.

Where else is a homicidal maniac, especially in the south, likely to find 30 or 40 thousand victims in one place with the assurance that few if any of them are armed? “Gun-free zone” whiners have blood on their hands.

Unfortunately, you are entirely correct. However, it wouldn't make much difference even had it not been in force. The high school curriculums and the overwhelming majority of high school educators are intent in producing sheep for the slaughter. Maybe I'm biased working as I do for the 4th largest school district in the nation these last 17 years and the last twelve in the inner city. My fight has been to try and counter that in my students. To make them think, choose to see all sides of all issues and make informed decisions according to their own values and all the facts and not to just swallow the pabulum fed them by a liberal educational establishment, nationwide. It's a losing battle, trust me. I teach seniors. Trying to overcome the cumulative effects of eleven previous years of mental programming is impossible. That's why my wife (also a high school teacher...but with 31 years in the classroom to my 17) and I are seriously preparing to retire within 4 years. Paying off debts and making wise investments. We're in good shape and on schedule to leave it all behind.

Wow, the press is already grilling the White House spokesman on the President's stance on gun control. That didn't take long.

What would a professor be doing in a dorm?

Personally tutoring some 19 year old?

At 7AM on a Monday morning? I doubt it.

That's cute -- naive -- but cute

You say Asian to an American, he visualizes something vaguely Chinese/Vietnamese/Korean/Japanese.

You say Asian to a person from the UK, he sees Indian Subcontinent and such types.

I don’t think most US folks think of that when they hear the word Asian. Lots of US have trouble telling the difference between Hispanic and Arab, for that matter...more likely to say he was hispanic than Asian for a person who looked like he was from Pakistan or Iraq or Saudi Arabia.

There are no confirmed reports that the Univ President was a shooting victim.

I think he was giving statements earlier today.

You are SO RIGHT. Both of my kids attend VA schools and I have had the opportunity because of situations on their campus to inquire of the emergency managers as to whether the schools had any kind of emergency plans and guess what.....they didn’t. It makes me sick! With populations of thousands of students....they need to sit down and do risk assessment and planning for every conceivable situation.

This will get really confused for the next couple of hours as students ring home and relay what they saw, some of which will get posted on the internet and will be contradictory by other eye witnesses and official statements.

I'll pray for the victms, pray that nothing else happens and wait a few hours for it to get sorted out.

I live right across the street from the campus. This place was crawling with police and ambulances.

I have been completly freaked out all morning. When they said the gunman was loose I armed myself with a knife and kept my eyes on the windows. What a horrible tragedy for me personally. Blacksburg will never be the same from now on.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. “I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.”

I wonder what Larry will have to say today.

“I think since the word “oriental” became politically incorrect, “asian” has replaced it. In other words, I think this is someone that in less PC times would have been called oriental”

But didn’t the description say six feet tall?
