>People on both sides of the issue are going to make use of this event for their cause

Yes, but typically
the media treats liberals
as "common sense" folks

while conservatives
will be treated as nut jobs
exploiting the deaths . . .

"Because he’s not middle eastern?"

No, because the scenario doesn't fit jihadi. Looks like he may not have been a student also and traveled around looking for his ex g/f.

I can think of one—a student went on an armed rampage at a law school in southwest Virginia (not far from Blacksburg, ironically), and was stopped when confronted by someone who had gone out to his car and gotten his gun.

ABC now saying 29 dead....and toll to climb....

Massacre at Virginia Tech: 29 Confirmed Dead

Fatalities Expected to Rise; Suspected Gunman Among the Dead

By DAVID SCHOETZ, NED POTTER, and the staff of ABC News Apr. 16, 2007—

- At least 29 people are dead in what may be the biggest mass killing on a college campus in American history -- and the death toll may rise.

Police at Virginia Tech, in Blaksburg, Va., said that the shootings happened at a dormitory and a classroom on opposite sides of the university campus.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said that one person was killed in the first shooting, which occurred just after 7 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a large dormitory. Flinchum said that at least 20 more people were killed at Norris Hall, an academic building.

The gunman, whose identity has not been released, is among the dead. Flinchum wouldn't say whether the shooter had killed himself.

ABC News has confirmed that there were two separate bomb threats last week at Virginia Tech that targeted engineering buildings. The first was directed at Torgersen Hall, while the second was directed at multiple engineering buildings. Students and staff were evacuated, and the university had offered a $5,000 reward for information into the threats.

Two local hospitals have reported treating 21 people, though it is unclear how many of those may have died.

University president Charles Steger said that police have not officially tied together the two shootings.

Steger described today's events as an incident of "tragic proportions" and said, "the university is shocked and horrified that this would befall us."

The campus is closed today and classed are canceled today and tomorrow. Families seeking to reunite with their children have been directed by the university to the Inn at Virginia Tech.

MSNBC seems to have the best covereage.

They had an interview with a student who was shot in the upper arm. The student is a sophomore majoring in biochemistry (I think) and he was in Norris Hall. Anyway, he told MSNBC that the shooter was college-aged male, Asian, and wearing a marron cap and leather jacket. The student said that his professor was shot. He said that he and other students barricaded the door to keep the shooter out. He said that the shooter did not appear to be looking for anyone and that the victims were randomly shot.

College students drink a lot and do stupid things. They don’t need to be carrying guns around.

I's probably not legal for a lot of them to be drinking but they do it anyway. Why would you think not allowing students with permits to carry on campus would prevent anyone from carrying on campus even though it's not legal?

I’m in college and I would feel incredibly uncomfortable going to class surrounded my random people with firearms. College students drink a lot and do stupid things. They don’t need to be carrying guns around.

Those that carry LEGALLY don't usually do things like get drunk while carrying. How may drunk folks do you see in class? If you are not comfortable around people that may or may not be armed you should spend the rest of your life at home, hiding in a hole.
When I was in college I knew people that carried concealed on campus, it made be feel much safer. I often carried a knife because that was legal there without a permit.

he must have some serious weapons training. reports say he was armed with two 9mm handguns, yet he seems to have managed to inflict so many fatal wounds - you would think once the shooting started people would be running like crazy.

i've been present during two armed robberies... the first was at a jewelry store i worked at... the other was at a hair salon--i was getting my hair done for a wedding i was in later that day... they occured about 10 years apart... i ran out of the building both times...

the first time, i saw the gun pointed at us... hit the floor behind the counter... crawled out the back door... and i don't remember doing it... the second time i was in the chair getting my hair done... the guy came in... pulled out his gun... went to the cash register... as he was trying to open it, i got out of my chair and ran out the door to the 7-11 across the way... it was scary both times!

Are you feeling uncomfortable with all the students driving cars too? Those students kill more people than any nut with a gun.

What about those carrying scissors, pencils, knitting needles?

What about those that are black belts in some form of martial art? Are you uncomfortable around them too?

Give me a break........

I think FOX may have talked to them earlier, just referencing them as students. They were talking to a female student (Ashley Sammon, maybe) and then they went to a male student, also with the last name of Sammon. I thought that seemed odd at the time.

Anyone else remember this?

Yes, I heard that this morning too. They were named Sammon...

Oh my Lord, 29 dead now...what a sad, sad day!
