Killer's Note: 'You Caused Me to Do This'
ABC News ^ | 4/17/07

Posted on 04/17/2007 9:51:27 AM PDT by areafiftyone

April 17, 2007 — Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year-old student who killed 32 people and then himself yesterday, left a long and "disturbing" note in his dorm room at Virginia Tech, say law enforcement sources.

Sources have now described the note, which runs several pages, as beginning in the present tense and then shifting to the past tense. It contains rhetoric explaining Cho's actions and says, "You caused me to do this," the sources told ABC News.

Sources say Cho killed two people in a dorm room, returned to his own dorm room where he re-armed and left the note, then went to a classroom building on the other side of campus. There, he killed 30 more people in four classrooms before shooting himself in the head.

Cho, born in South Korea, was a legal resident alien of the United States. He was a senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in English.

Sources tell ABC News Cho bought his first gun, a Glock 9 millimeter handgun, on March 13; they say he bought his second weapon, a .22 caliber pistol, within the last week. The serial numbers on both guns had been filed off, they said.

Authorities found the receipt for the 9 millimeter handgun in his backpack. They say it also contained two knives and additional ammunition for the two guns.

Legal permanent resident aliens may purchase firearms in the state of Virginia. A resident alien must, however, provide additional identification to prove he or she is a resident of the state.

Sections of chain similar to those used to lock the main doors at Norris Hall, the site of the second shooting that left 31 dead, were also found inside a Virginia Tech dormitory, sources confirmed to ABC News.

I can hear it now.

"Growing up, Cho was often teased for being asian, hearing local children call him things like 'gook', 'charlie', 'chink', 'slope', and other disparaging terms for Asians. Because of this, over the years, his resentment of the local population grew until an altercation with his girlfriend caused him to crack"...

They’ll find a proper noun not capitalized and charge him.

I hope not.

The kid was nuts before he killed the first two. It was all planned way ahead. The guy was under the care of a mental health professional and taking anti-depressants. He had set a fire in the dorm and was accused of stalking some of the females on campus. His writing prof also reported that his writings were disturbing and recommended his to counciling.

She won’t release the topic of the writings, but my guess is that they were essays that were in sympathy with the terrorists. I think that is the meaning of Ismail’s Ax on his arm. I think he was saying that his arm was acting as the ax of Ismail.

He was a senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in English

I'm wondering if he enrolled as an English major originally, or switched to English when he found he could not make it as an engineering major. Why go to Virginia Tech to major in English?

If he was on the verge of flunking as an English major, perhaps that caused the snap

You’re right. Thanx. Since he posted the perps name in his post well before the name was released by the authorities, I think the post has credibility.

charlatan...who calls people charlatans?

I was actually sort of amused by his choice of the word "charlatan," just because it is a great word that is really descriptive and implies quite a lot. I'd really like to know to what he's referring, but perhaps that will come out later.

As an English major, I would expect that he'd have a good vocabulary, so his word choice isn't surprising to me. Seems apt.

What ‘nickname’?

The one from Moby Dick or the Scandinavian poem?

I think Ismail Ax is a scrambled phrase.

I am xaisl. I am Lisax. I am Axlis. I am Silax....nothing yet.

I see the .22 as his back up as he reloads the 9.

For some strange reason people look upon the .22 as if it is a toy. In a lot of instances the .22 has greater penetration than its larger siblings, due to its smaller cross section. True it doesn't have the knock down power, but it is a very effective killing round. especially if you can shoot it accurately.

I haven’t seen anyone question why he targeted the Engineering building students and professors, since he was an English major he probably didn’t use the building much or know any of them, if it was planned what was the grudge with them maybe rejected from the dept? If he wanted to go in a random building and kill as many as possible you would think a building that has classes like freshman US History or other prerequisites would have large auditoriums full of students, the engineering classes were like 15 students each room.

approx. 7:15am: first shooting

11:24am, request from officers inside the classroom building for booties (blood issues).

11:26am, AP story reporting suspect in custody.

What they were saying later in the afternoon is that they didn’t know whether there was a different suspect in the first shooting. If so, they didn’t have him yet. Cho was found first.

My understanding is that Cho was NOT a legal permanent resident. He was here on a student visa. Federal law specifically prevents anyone on non-immigrant visa status from purchasing handguns.

Maybe it's mentioned below and I haven't gotten that far. There was a link to another message board from the gun shop owner who sold him the gun. (looks legit, since everything he said matches what has since been released, including the name.) He said that all the paperwork was in order and everything had been handled legally.

Ismail Ax might turn into something else at anagrams.com....I think that’s the name of the old site that everyone used.

I thought of that too. Nothing jumps out at me at the anagram generator I use. Here's a few interesting ones:

ALIAS MIX
SALAMI XI
ALAS I MIX
MAIL AXIS
AXIS MAIL
I ISLAM AX
SAIL MAXI

I suggested that the word ISLAM should be included and got:

ISLAM A XI
ISLAM AX I

I then narrowed it down to the obvious "I AM .......", but I still don't get anything that makes sense.

I AM LA SIX
I AM LA XIS
I AM LAS XI
I AM LAX IS

Ishmale the son of Abraham and concubine Hagar is attributed to be the father of the Arab people. Don't know about the spelling differential.
