MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - A woman denied a teaching degree on the eve of graduation because of a MySpace photo has sued the university.

Millersville University instead granted Stacy Snyder a degree in English last year after learning of her Web-published picture, which bore the caption “Drunken Pirate.”

“I dreamed about being a teacher for a long time,” said Snyder, 27, who now works as a nanny. Story continues below ↓advertisement

The photo, taken at a 2005 Halloween party, shows Snyder wearing a pirate hat while drinking from a plastic “Mr. Goodbar” cup. It was posted on her own MySpace site.

Although Snyder apologized, she learned the day before graduation that she would not be awarded an education degree or teaching certificate.

Jane S. Bray, dean of the School of Education, accused Snyder of promoting underage drinking, the suit states.

From the story, I would have guessed it was a church-affiliated school, and was planning to defend them. Then I clicked on the school, and saw it was part of the state system.

They don’t seem to mount much of a defense: “Although the University respects Ms. Snyder’s opinion, these allegations only provide a single perspective of this academic situation.” and “educational decisions are based ... not solely on a student’s personal website or social networking site. “

Maybe it’s the “Mr. Goodbar” cup that has them riled up. Anyone out there remember the movie, “Looking for Mr. Goodbar”?

That's a 30 year old movie. Diane Keaton was actually young enough to play a woman who goes to singles bars. I bet there's not too many people under the age of 40 who remember that movie. The candy bar is probably much better known.

And she was 26 at the time. Its not like she was 18 and doing jager bombs off another girls stomach.

That would have gotten her a scholarship to the State University of New York at New Paltz.

I only remember it because I was 15 at the time and got to see it at a friend’s house on cable. (Crummy movie.)

You have taught a very important lesson. Don't post pictures of yourself being a fool when you want a job setting an example for children.

A) She was not denied a job; she was denied a degree from a public university, without due process of law, for engaging in a legal activity.

B) She is an adult engaging an an adult activity. She has no obligation to set an example for children under circumstances like this. Indeed, one of the problems with parents and adults today is that they allow children to dicate every aspect of our lives. Get over it.

No; probably like you, I’ve seen it hundreds of times, and I’ve just wondered — “What’s that about?”

Probably in Wiki, somewhere?

I don't think he'd have been as big a star if people knew he liked gerbils more than women.

According to her on Fox and Friends this morning, the pic included the caption “Drunken Pirate.”

The article neglected to mention the Beastie Boys poster in the background. And the furniture that she is next to, is that particle board? Egads, I’m amazed they even gave her an English degree.

She thought it was funny, here friends probably loved the picture and the memory of the party.

I can’t believe a person can be denied a certificate they earned based on a picture.

Your comment suggests that this picture reflects poorly on her personal integrity. Why is a picture of a woman drinking beer considered evidence of lack of integrity? What’s wrong with being a “drunken pirate” for a halloween party?

Perhaps the real Dean was murdered by an escaped lunatic, who assumed her identity.

I am not THAT blonde.

You can make your myspace profile private. That is what I do so no one but people I ALLOW to see my profile can see it. If you don’t want people (potential employers, schools, friends, parents, etc) to see it, make it private for goodness sakes!

Maybe she could get a teaching job in Cuba. They seem to admire lady pirates down there!

It wasn’t my judgment...the school said they wouldn’t give her a degree because of what they perceived as a lack of integrity on this woman’s part...she set a bad example...promoted underage drinking..etc.

As for my own opinion on being a drunken pirate for a Halloween party (which I didn’t give before..but am giving now)....being a Christian who doesn’t celebrate Halloween...a drunken pirate appears to fit perfectly in that sort of party.
