Racial bias among refs? Study: White officials call more fouls on black players

An academic study of NBA officiating found that white referees called fouls at a greater rate against black players than against white players, The New York Times reported in Wednesday's editions.

The study by a University of Pennsylvania assistant professor and Cornell graduate student also found that black officials called fouls more frequently against white players than black, but noted that that tendency was not as pronounced. Justin Wolfers, an assistant professor of business and public policy at Penn's Wharton School, and Joseph Price, a Cornell graduate student in economics, said the difference in calls "is large enough that the probability of a team winning is noticeably affected by the racial composition of the refereeing crew."

The study, conducted over a 13-season span through 2004, found that the racial makeup of a three-man officiating crew affected calls by up to 41/2 percent.

The NBA strongly criticized the study, which was based on information from publicly available box scores, which show only the referees' names and contain no information about which official made a call.

I’m just naive, and all ref’s are racist.....

According to the way I read it, and vetted by Kweisi, Al, Jesse, and Louie, all refs are racist, but black refs are less racist than whites; but, since blacks are not generally in a 'position of power' over whites, blacks can't be racist in the first place, so it's just those oppresive, pinky-white honkey rednecked ^*)*^%@# refs that are racist.

Sooo...the black players need to clean up their act huh??? But isn’t it also true that 100% of NBA players that attack white fans in the stands, are black?

How about this? How many white players are strictly “perimeter players”, ie. in the game to knock down the occaisional 3-point shot as opposed to driving to the backet to creat contact as well as a shot? If it weren’t for the trey, there would be a lot fewer whites in the game today.

The so-called increase in fouls called against black players was between 2.5-4.5%.

That is a meaningless statistic since even if it was a very professionally done study (which I doubt) 2.5-4.5% would most likely fall into the margin of error.

In addition, a study like this doesn’t take into consideration the characteristics of each individual player. Things such as some players regardless of skin color are more agressive than others and therefore will be called for more fouls.

This is just more B.S. from the left. The next thing you know, Brian Ross of ABC will have a report claiming that these “racist” officials are all Republicans.

This research says nothing about who commits more fouls - black players or white players.

This research also says nothing about who gets called for more fouls - black players or white players.

All this research says is: for ALL the fouls that black players commit, whether it’s more fouls than white players, less fouls than white players, or the same number of fouls as white players - a WHITE REF is more likely to call it than a BLACK REF.

This statistic is not meaningless. Even though the number 2.5% is so small, the fact that the sample space is SO LARGE (600,000 fouls analyzed), this makes the data statistically significant and outside the margin of error.

If you read the paper, you will see that they prove this to be true using common statistical methods which have been used for decades.

White officials call more fouls on black players.

That appears to be logically equivalent to "Black officials call fewer fouls on black players."

So the title can be restated as:

So black refs are giving black players a break?? Seems racist to me. Wonder what kind of attitude black players have with white refs as opposed to black refs?

The NBA strongly criticized the study, which was based on information from publicly available box scores, which show only the referees' names and contain no information about which official made a call.

Nothing about the nature of the foul, the positioning of the players on the court, what they were doing, etc. Those are all factors on how and why fouls are called.

Trying to measure something that subjective by statistical analysis must have been a daunting task. The study reads like junk science - but it sounds like the researchers have a great future in developing stats that can accumulate grants. Follow the money.
