I don’t watch pro sports anymore, but if I did, I would issue a major yawn over this sort of whining.

Black kids see their college heroes in football and basketball going from Bowl Games and March Madness to Millionaire on TV in a matter of weeks. The untelevised Baseball draft results in a player working his way through the Minor Leagues.

I wonder how Hammerin’ Hank would feel if say, Whitey Honkeyboy, a slugger for the St. Louis Cardinals were about to break his record as opposed to a member of his self-defined tribe.

Aaron, like most people, don't have a high opinion of Bonds and his use of steroids.

Perhaps Aaron should go out to the hood and suggest this to all the gang bangers, and encourage them to play baseball.

What Aaron should be worried about is too many punks like Lastings Milledge (arrogant, wanna-be pimp/rapper thugs) getting into the league and giving black baseball players a bad name.

And as someone else points out, is Aaron worried about too few whites in basketball? Didn't think so.

The implication is that it is due to racism.
How about football or basketball? Is there a “problem” there? Why no racism there?

Asked if he'll be involved when Barry Bonds breaks his home run record, Aaron answered: "I don't have a comment. I don't want to be a part of that discussion."

AKA, I'm a complete no class a-hole.

Are you aware that 12 year old boys can and are nationally ranked for basketball? Excellent, let's get them started before high school filling their heads with dreams of playing the NBA and one more excuse to not work hard at an education.

I had a dad tell me at a parent-teacher conference that his 6th grader didn't need to worry about grades - D's were fine - because he was going to play in the MLB. That plan didn't work out so well when he busted his rotator at 16.

“Aaron, like most people, don’t have a high opinion of Bonds and his use of steroids.”

Yes, I’m aware of that.

But the issue here, by Aaron’s own choice, is race. So while he doesn’t condone uber prick Bond’s use of steroids (et al), it SEEMS that he would at least quietly approve of a fellow brother breaking his record as opposed to a white guy.

I am personally upset that there are too few Inuits, Buddhists and Sikhs in Polo. (Horse or Water)
I have also noticed a marked exclusion of unsighted Ashkenazic Jewish persons in competitive large bore rifle shooting.(None at the last Camp Perry matches, and to their shame none from the U.S.Olympic Biathlon team)
This obvious religious and race based prejudice is both unconscionable and disgusting.
I know of many short persons who would love a chance to demonstrate their athletic skills and earn lucrative contracts in the NBA.
Stop the Exclusion. Fair Play for the Odd.

Hank could always hit a baseball but he never was the sharpest tack.

major influx of Asian and Carribbean players

Ya think?

Active Roster for a team in the Northeast.

County of birth

#

%

Dominican

5

20%

Puerto Rican

4

16%

Japanese

2

8%

USA

14

56%

Sox Total

25

100%

Non US Players

44%

If I add in 1 Japanese (Dice-k's translator), and 1 Dominican (Manny's coatholder) because they were officially introduced and trotted out onto the field during the Opening Day Ceremony, that total would be 48%.

Say goodbye to "as AMERICAN as Mom, Baseball, and Apple Pie".

Say Buenos Dias to Mamacita and Empanada de Manzana.

Why can't we just leave it so that the most qualified people get the jobs?

To Aron's credit, he doesn't propose any kind of quotas. He proposes getting more Black youth involved in the game to try and attract more talented Black players.

I still don't see any reason to target efforts to children or players of any specific race, but he at least doesn't appear to be suggesting passing up more talented players of one race for less talented players of another race.

I watched a game on TV (it must have been April 11 when "Dice-K" Matsuzaka faced Ichiro Suzuki for the first time in the US) when the Seattle lineup was almost entirely Hispanic or Asian, with one white player...and one African American who came in as a substitution late in the game.

Non-Hispanic black players may seem few compared to their dominance in basketball, but they have dominated the superstar category in recent decades. The three living players who have hit 600 or more home runs are all non-Hispanic blacks, and Frank Robinson and Reggie Jackson both finished with more than 550. I forget what Ken Griffey, Jr.'s current lifetime total is, but he could finish with more than 600.

Just checked on Ken Griffey, Jr. He now has 571 lifetime home runs (hit his 8th of this season on May 15).

Why do great athletes get to this level of race baiting? Hey Hank, is there enough blacks in basketball? In football?

I’m so tired of this scenario that I’m now turning into a bigot by ignoring every media thought on this crap.
