The stones look rough now thousands of years later...but how about when they were built?

in the hundreds of years their culture existed before they built the Great Pyramids.

Probably thousands of years. The most incredible thing about the Egyptians was the duration of their civilization, absolutely dwarfs any western civilization that I am familiar with.

They well may have been more technologically sophisticated. Archaeologists have found evidence of ancient batteries and electroplating in Iraq. The ancients, instead of choosing planet wrecking energy intensive technologies like petrochemical combustion, choose safer, saner renew ables. Like the workforce that built the pyramids - slaves.

I have never confused concrete for rock.

Neither has anyone else..
The egyptians used a primitive type of cement, not concrete.

The Romans invented concrete, not the egyptians, and they did it well after the pyramids were built.

I read somewhere that the ancient egyptians documented EVERYTHING. There are written records of good purchased, sold, birht and death.

But not one scrap of parchment showing anything relating to the building of the pyramids or any costs for stones, food for slaves, ropes, etc.

The pyramids are WEIRd to me... I suspect they are much much older than we think, only because no one remembers or documented building them.

Is it possible that civilizations existed before the last ice age 10-15,000 years ago? what if the pyramids were 30,000 years old, or more.

How did out early civilization even figure out something so simple as digging in the dirt to find ore to make metals? I mean its not like itis obvious or anything.

These two guys have all
the pyramid documents.
The records exist

but to access them
you have to give these two guys
a bizarre handshake . . .

My understanding is that cement is an ingredient of concrete and is what binds together the other ingredients into the final product known as concrete.

This discovery is not expected to end the speculation that extraterrestials somehow were involved.

I stopped reading right there.

Cement is indeed an "ingredient" of concrete.
Concrete is cement combined with an "aggregate", like gravel or crushed rock.

The point I was attempting to make was, the egyptians did not make that conceptual leap, to the best of our knowledge.
They used a limestone mortar but never went so far as to add an aggregate of any kind..
They did, however, make small castings of statuary and some decorative items.

It was not until the Romans that concrete was conceived of and used in large scale projects such as architecture and other structural elements..
The Romans use of concrete involved different formulations as well..
One of their earliest known projects was the casting/pouring of concrete for fish pens.
They used a concrete containing a type of volcanic ash ( like pumice ) which allowed them to create a type of water-proof concrete.
Some of those concrete pens still exist today and are still water proof.
Some Roman construction has been shown to use wheat, cooked into a paste, and added to their mortar to make it stickier. ( Interestingly, the Chinese used a similar trick using rice paste in their mortar at about the same period in history )

Romans built St. Peter's Basilica which has a concrete dome, which was the largest free standing ( unsupported ) dome in the world well into the 19th century. ( maybe into the 20th, not sure )

Additionally, Romans used "reinforced" concrete in some projects, IIRC.
Much of their knowledge was lost, as mentioned by another FReeper earlier in the thread.
Portland cement and use of reinforced concrete would not be developed until the 20th century.

Thanks. I read that “Portland cement” was developed in the early to mid 1800s. Can’t recall the exact date.
