Rosie O'Donnell has fought her last fight at "The View." ABC said Friday she asked for, and received, an early exit from her contract at the daytime chatfest following her angry confrontation with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck on Wednesday. She was due to leave in mid-June.

It ended a colorful eight-month tenure for O'Donnell that lifted the show's ratings but no doubt caused heartburn for show creator Barbara Walters. O'Donnell feuded with Donald Trump and frequently had snippy exchanges with the more conservative Hasselbeck.

O'Donnell said last month she would be leaving because she could not agree to a new contract with ABC executives.

"Rosie contributed to one of our most exciting and successful years at `The View,'" Walters said. "I am most appreciative. Our close and affectionate relationship will not change."

In a statement, O'Donnell said that "it's been an amazing year and I love all three women."

No one was feeling the love on Wednesday, when the argument with Hasselbeck began over O'Donnell's statement last week about the war: "655,000 Iraqi civilians have died. Who are the terrorists?"

Talk show critics accused O'Donnell of calling U.S. troops terrorists. She called Hasselbeck "cowardly" for not saying anything in response to the critics.

"Do not call me a coward, because No. 1, I sit here every single day, open my heart and tell people what I believe," Hasselbeck retorted, and their riveting exchange continued despite failed attempts by their co-hosts to cut to a commercial.

According to a New York Post report, O'Donnell's chief writer, Janette Barber, was allegedly led out of the building on Wednesday after she was caught drawing mustaches on photographs of Hasselbeck in "The View" studios. ABC executives didn't return repeated calls for questions on the incident Friday.

On Thursday O'Donnell had asked for a day off to celebrate her partner's birthday. "The View" aired a taped show on Friday.

On her Web site, O'Donnell posted a scrapbooklike video on Friday with pictures and news clippings of her tenure at "The View." Cyndi Lauper's "Sisters of Babylon" played in the background.

A day earlier, she posted messages on her Web site indicating she might not be back.

"When painting there is a point u must step away from the canvas as the work is done," she wrote. "Any more would take away."

Her mass appeal has me stumped and bewildered.

What demographic finds her shtick entertaining, her voice melodious, her appearance pleasing and her continuous attacks on the United States informative?

I can only conclude there are a whole lot of easily entertained, hearing impaired, ugly, overweight, lesbian loving, America hating, conspiracy nuts who are wealthy enough to stay home and watch daytime tv everyday.

Of course this is only my humble opinion, I could be wrong!

We need to have a Hasselbeck rule.

The problem with the "pic rule" is that it mandates a picture of Helen T at some point to cool things off.

If Hasselbeck will actually be a straight forward as she was with Rosie in this last 'altercation', then I think we could easily make room for your rule.

So glad that Walters, ABC, and the View’s audience are exposed for the juvenile’s they are, and always have been.

Enough vapid TV.

I wonder if we could get Elizabeth to give a course to the Republicans on how it’s done? They surly need it.

Do you spend every day worrying about weighty issues like immigration reform etc.?

Even President Bush has fun despite all he deals with every day. Sometimes something tabloidish is not a bad thing.

Thanks for the link. I hadn’t watched it closely til just now.

Joy Behar came off looking the worst in my opinion. She loves to throw verbal handgrennades, but man was she a wimp on this.

Rosie has proven herself to be a quitter. The minute she loses an argument, she runs. Typical. She counts on everyone to rollover for her bully ways. Liz finally stands up to her and Rosie plays the victim.

Rosie got bested by sweet, innocent Elizabeth. HAHAHAHAAHA!

Rosie wouldn't last 5 min. against Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter or Laura Ingraham.

Hasselbeck took you down. Bet it hurts. Glad it does.

I've never watched The View, neither has my wife. But I've read a few posts on FR about O'Donnell on that show, and the apparent ineffectiveness of Hasselbeck in speaking the Conservative line.

I think it's kinda nice that Rosie leaves because Hasselbeck finally has the gumption to speak up. Not only does it show how thin-skinned and childish these leftists are, it paints Hasselbeck as one who can suffer much yet hang in there. A nice contrast between ideologies!

Joy is a result of affirmative action targeting people who are stuck on stupid. You're right, all she does is throw out stupid comments with absolutely no means to back them up with dialogue.

IMHO, the View was intended to be nothing more than "woman banter" about insignificant stuff until they brought on Rosie the Riveter........then it became political.

This woman is deranged and quite frightening. Why do we give her the time of day?

She's Hillary without the charm.

Seriously, I'm going to try to stay out of Nyack for a few weeks. I sure wouldn't want to run into her on the sidewalk!
