ONOLULU -- The new commander of U.S. military forces in the Pacific and Asia says he found Chinese military leaders intensely interested in acquiring aircraft carriers during a recent visit to that country. Adm. Timothy J. Keating added in an interview that he had warned the Chinese about the huge challenges involved in building and manning an aircraft carrier. "I suggested let's not be naive about the complexity of those ships, and they are not cheap," he said.

If the Chinese military declares openly interest in aircraft carrier, this is an old Oriental trick. All ways pay attention to what they don’t say versus what they do say. Pay attention to the Chinese submarine developments more than aircraft carriers. Today US surveillance can detect anything on the surface except when under jungle cover or underwater.

Nothing surprising here, since they bought the Kiev and the Melbourne to study already. They have the Su-27/J-11 to operate off it, and they have increased military spending to finally support such an endeavour.

Submarines, DDGs, etc., aren’t necessarily excluded by the drive toward a carrier fleet.

You are astute. Vely astute.

Number 1 son say submalines be useful for locating sunken callier. That is why we must have one ship flom column A and 2 flom column B.

The ChiComs bought a Russian aircraft carrier, the Varyag, and are refitting it.

I wouldn’t trust the ChiComms any farther than I could Throw one of their DF-31 ICBM’s.

Pay attention to the Chinese submarine developments more than aircraft carriers.

Much like the old Soviet Union, there is a surprising amount of open debate in military journals that are publicly avaliable.

The reality is the carrier thing is controversial within the PLAN and there are obviously arguing factions.

I wouldn’t joke too loudly. The Japanese were laughed at in 1938, but built a great fleet that came within inches of defeating us. The Chinese are equally inventive, adaptive, and resolved to overtake us in carriers. I believe that they will within the next decade. I hope that our military can rise up to the challenges.

It’s our money they are doing this with.
We need to buy our trinkets from another, less hostile country.

I wonder.
Are we keeping close tabs on Chinese submarines?
If we are, do they know?
And if we are, and they know, do we know that they know, that we are?

I wonder.

"Adm. Timothy J. Keating added in an interview that he had warned the Chinese about the huge challenges involved in building and manning an aircraft carrier."

Why doesn't ghe just dummy up and let the Chinese go ahead and build as many as they wish?Using the Soviet carrier they bought as a model, well, they will spend a lot of money to no viable purpose.

As I said on the other thread regarding this same meeting, the Admiral was quoted as saying, regarding the Chinese trying to build a carrier...

"This would be a profoundly difficult venture if the Chinese choose to undertake it," he said.

Well, my input to the admiral is simply this...I believe from the following that we can see that they are already well on their way.

Turning the former Soviet Varyag into an Opertional PLAN Carrier
