Police: Arrest Made In Kelsey Smith Homicide

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- An arrest has been made in the homicide investigation of 18-year-old Kelsey Smith.

Late Wednesday night, police said Edwin R. Hall, 26, of Olathe, was being held in the Johnson County Jail in connection with the slaying of Smith.

Law enforcement crews combing a large wooded area near Longview Lake Wednesday found a body believed to be missing teenager Kelsey Smith, who was abducted from an Overland Park Target store parking lot Saturday night.

Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said Smith's body was found about 1:30 p.m. across the state line near Grandview, Mo., about 20 miles east of the abduction site.

Positive identification was pending, but Douglass said volunteer searchers could stop their work. He did not say how the woman was slain, but KMBC reported that there were signs of trauma to the body.

"As I understand she was found at a wooded area, but I can't say whether she was directly concealed by bushes," Douglass told reporters during an afternoon news conference.

You’re right about the myspace. That guy looks a lot older than the pic they just showed.

The eyebrows, sad eyes, and face shape look very similar to the composite of the suspect in the other girl’s disappearance. Yowza!

The local NBC affiliate, NBC action news, has an entirely different booking photo for the man arrested. I don't know what caused the mix-up but the second photo, that is, the one shown by the news station, appears to be correct.

Wouldn't a short rope on a normal sized tree work better?

Depends on how you want to kill him.

You have the Short Drop, your preferred method.

You have your Standard Drop:
The standard drop, involves a drop of between four to six feet. It was considered an advance on the short drop because it was intended to be sufficient to break the person's neck, causing immediate paralysis and immobilization (and perhaps immediate unconsciousness).

Then we have the Long drop:
This process, also known as the measured drop, was introduced in 1872 by William Marwood. More scientific than the other two. Instead of everyone falling the same standard distance, the person's weight was used to determine how much slack would be provided in the rope so that the distance dropped would be enough to ensure that the neck was broken. Prior to 1892, the drop was between four and ten feet, depending on the weight of the body, and was calculated to deliver a force of 1,260 lbf, which fractured the neck at either the 2nd and 3rd or 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae. However, this force resulted in some decapitations.

I would be curious what a person is supposed to do in her situation. She had put her bags into the back of the car and was getting in her car when this guy came running at her and shoved her. I don’t think she had a chance to kick or respond at all. There was no struggle. He just shoved, jumped in and took off.

I have two small girls and can barely breathe when I think about this. I’ve had to turn our talk radio off because I can’t bare to listen to it anymore.

Great posts....I have a feeling that since grandview is in jackson county (the same county as kcmo), it would hit the city. This looks like it’s going to become a federal case (I’m guessing) because he took her across state line.
