Immigration bill's demise suggests many are OK with status quo
San Francisco Chronicle | June 9, 2007 | Carolyn Lochhead

Posted on 06/09/2007 4:30:11 AM PDT by Baladas

The collapse of the giant immigration overhaul in the Senate might demonstrate that the dreaded status quo -- 12 million people living in the country illegally and more arriving each day -- is not really so dreadful after all.

The multitude of interests involved in the immigration debate -- business groups, ethnic lobbies, politicians in both parties and the American public -- in the end proved unwilling to yield enough to support the bipartisan compromise.

As California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat who helped negotiate the failed deal, said, the current immigrant situation in the United States is a de facto amnesty. Even the most ardent advocates of a border crackdown concede that it will be impossible to apprehend and deport 12 million people living here illegally.

But as much as everyone complains about the situation, the enormous black market in labor operating openly in the United States serves the interests of many involved, however imperfectly. It is an amnesty without amnesty.

[snip]

The Senate might yet resurrect the bill. Feinstein and other supporters vowed Friday to press forward. President Bush is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Republican senators at the Capitol.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to attach the immigration overhaul to bills naming a post office if it comes to that. "We are not giving up; we are not giving in," said Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, the top Democratic sponsor.

Conservatives did not "win" this past week

Nope, at best a standoff in the midst of a worsening scenario.

Someone in South Carolina needs to have a very serious talk with Lindsey Graham.

Kind of like the 2006 election was about Iraq and corruption. Please. It was about the GOP shafting their base- and they STILL don’t get it.

The left has to look at it like that... Because it allows them to believe that they actually WON the elections, as opposed to the pubbies throwing the elections away...

According to the Talking Heads, the WHY
you ask about is based on BIG MONEY being
made on the backs of immigrant workers.
But there’s a lot more to it.
a. The HIRERS are leary of the citizenship
grant because that means the laborers would
start chiming in with the UNIONS (pay raises!)
as the NEW flock of immigrants under the WORK
PROGRAM arrive each year.
b. The UNIONS are eager to revive their
power as a political entity through added
millions to their rolls. Added bodies mean
added VOTES dictated by the Union! They long
for the good old days even as their former
members are dying off of old age and retirement.
c. Illegals have become comfortable in their
status and by the buck they wield at Walmart
and fast food businesses. They’re living
better than they did 10 years ago and STILL
manage to send megabucks back to Mexico.
Divide that huge loss of US revenue by the
estimated number of illegals in this country
and you reealize the number of illegals is a
helluva lot MORE than the 12-15 million stated
by the Congress. Another one of the MANY dirty
little secrets we’re not supposed to know about.
d. If the GOP does NOT stand up against this
movement to socialize America, as a party it
will be defunct. The Democrats have only
this issue to stand on and convince citizens
the Old USA way of life is better gone by the
wayside of other governments. They view the
methods used by Europe as the right one, viz.
allow aliens carte blanche to western civiliza-
tion as a means of convincing them to JOIN
the free world socially, economically, and
ethically. (AIN’T gonna work!)

Nah, it “suggests” that normal Americans do not want criminal activity rewarded and we do not trust our own representatives to do the right thing.

This article “suggests” you have ZERO clue about what ordinary Americans want, and only shill for the traitors.

And finally, it “suggests” that we are trying to return our country to some semblance of normalcy, before the traitors voted to import/keep murderers and rapists and other horrific amendments we the people do not accept.

How can you mention Lyndsay Graham (RINO, SC) and “...deserve what the Democrats are doing to us...” in the same couple of sentences? Did you hear that Juan McCain and Graham went to Ted Kennedy’s office to get their marching orders on how to vote on an amendment to this bill?

This aint a Democrat-Republican thing; this is an arrogant government, including the President, trying to ram its will down the throats of the people who elected them. The only branch that hasn’t tried to screw us on this bill so far is the Supreme Court, and they’re probably waiting their turn.

The US Constitution is a contract between us and the government. All power that government has is derived from our consent, as opposed to the other way around. That fact makes us unique in the world, which is why we are so strong and prosperous. The government has intentions on breaking that contract. AS A LAST RESORT the Second Amendment gives us power to re-negotiate that contract. All governments are arrogant; if allowed, all governments will become tyrannical.

Whom we should support should not be based on “well, he voted for the amnesty bill, but he has done so much for our State/district”. Our votes and support should go to those who have defended the Constitution. Defending the Constitution means defending our borders. Voting for that amnesty bill is treason and a direct attack on the US Constitution.

Total nonsense.
What the opponents of the McCain-Kennedy-Specter Amnesty for Illegal Aliens bill said was that they DO NOT WANT BAD LEGISLATION; that does more harm, both in the near run and in the foreseeable future.
They want specific problems addressed, and they want those solutions to be logical, and effective, actually solving the problem.
Furthermore they want the quite highly paid and self satisfied “American House of Lords”, to pay attention to the inhabitants of this nation; the ones who pay the bills and see the problems at ground level.

The problems are solvable. And they appear to have an order of their own within which the broader border problems may be found and executed.
Monies have already been spent. Studies have been performed. Technical refinements exist.
Senators,...do your damned job, and do it without harming the patient.

I will attempt to respond paragaph by paragraph:

Just like the Democrats, He was elected by a majority of votes by the people of his State. Also I now believe that President Bush can be numbered in those who take their marching from Ted Kennedy regarding immigration.

The majoe difference between the Democrat and Republican Parties in in the spelling. They are both taking us to the same destination. We will just get there quicker with the Democrats.

Agree. But the American people have quitely surrendered their rights under the Constioution to the point if one of the Founding Fathers came back they would not recognize the Document by the way it is being applied today.

This is what is killing us nd is what will finish us off. The American people now only vote for who will do the most [they think] for them via the government. They will never elect a candidate who calls for self sacrifice and self dependence.

I thank the Good Lord each day that I am as Old as I am and do not have very many more years left on this earth.

I’m not ok with status quo.

Me neither. Why can't we shut the border now (Dims and Reps and all agree).

THEN figure out what to do with the current illegals. Better yet, shelve the damn shamnesty and make the issue a big one in the next election. Let people decide.

We waited 20 years. We can wait another 18 months.

We are being BLACKMAILED: no law on the border before you swallow shamnesty.
