Has anyone noticed that Environazis don't seem to care about the tree population anymore

Posted on 06/11/2007 8:10:41 PM PDT by Reform Canada

Has anyone noticed that ever since globalwarming has become the greenies big issue they have almost completely abandoned their other causes. Why don't we hear about the clear cutting of the forests and other green favorites. Obviously politics must be their chief concern otherwise they wouldn't have forgotten about their own issues.

Trees produce CO2, the most “noxious” greenhouse gas! So at least the greenhouse gasheads are being consistent!

Here in Maryland they are pushing for a return of paper bags since trees are a “renewable” resource and those blue plastic bags are making Baltimore’s trees look like old blue haired ladies.

They have been trying to push for that here in Canada as well. Obviously they can’t get the political mileage out of saving the trees anymore so they now advocate cutting down more since the know paper bags will cost business more than plastic bags.

Um, no. Trees eat CO2 and release oxygen. Back to third grade science with you!

My understanding is that when trees are young and growing, they suck a lot of CO2 out of the atmosphere. when they are old, they emit more CO2 in the atmosphere. One of the best ways to get CO2 out of the atmosphere is to plant a lot of trees, cut them down before they get old, and plant some new trees immediately.

Which is, uh, what logging companies do. Don’t tell.

Thanks for this explanation - the best one yet; I didn't know about the older trees emitting CO2.

Very good case for the logging industry - maybe the Oregon economy can be saved yet!

When they are DEAD they begin to emit CO2. It is called decay or rotting. :o) I guess that also constitutes old. While there is still photosenthysis, they are consuming CO2. I suppose there could be scenario when part of the tree is rotting while another part is still consuming CO2. Would that mean the tree is eating itself.

I think I have given myself a headache.

Especially since there are more trees on the planet now than any time in recorded history.

New growth forests use CO2, but OLD growth forests because of the rotting vegetaion below them consume O2 and RELEASE CO2. Does this help your headache. Thats when they should be cut!! LOL

How can they even talk of it any more? More of the U.S. is forested than it was in 1900.

I wish they would go back to trees. Not that I agree with not cutting any down, but I do agree with planting them. I love trees. As a kid I remember the cartoon owl, "Give a hoot, don't pollute, never be a dirty bird" and the crying Indian in the canoe. I miss the old enviro campaigns of trees and litter. Now it's just CO2 gasbag Al Gore.

I was just noticing that too. No talk about the vanishing Amazon Rain Forest either. Hysteria du jour.
