Movie Theatre Chain, AMC, gives student discounts, but none to our military members.

My 20 year old son, who is in the Marines and is currently on his way home from Afghanistan and Kuwait, recently went to the movies when he was home on leave with 2 of his friends who attend college and are also 20. They pulled out their student IDs and were immediately given a discount admission ticket. But my son was denied a discount because he was told that there were no discounts for members of the military. My son, as well as others in the military, are sacrificing much for our country.

I wrote to AMC and my husband spoke on the phone to one of their representatives. He was basically given the run-around, and was told that their decision had nothing to do with our "invasion of Iraq" even though my husband didn't even mention that.

In the grand scheme of things, this may not seem important, but if college students can garner a special discount, why not those defending our country and our freedom?

Good point.

Well - in our town we have two chains. AMC and Wehrenberg. Guess which one I’ll frequent?

Right. The next time you, AMC, tell a Fairytale like that begin it with "And Once Upon A Time!

Military make better money than students on average. I try not to be too generous with other people’s money.
They probably mentioned Iraq because they’ve heard complaints before.

Income shouldn’t enter into their decision. The military puts a lot on the line and deserve every penny they make. In fact, they don’t get paid enough. It would be nice to do it just to say “Thanks, guys, for making it safe for our citizenry to go to movie theatres and not have to worry about being blown up by terrorists on American soil.”

Geezers(like me) even get a discount and most of us can easily afford the full price.

No discount for military makes no sense.

I’d have to support the business to decide whom they wish to give discounts to and who not to, just as it is the consumer’s right to decide what businesses they wish to frequent.

FWIW, I don’t think I’ve been inside a movie house since the *first* Bush Administration.

The person my husband spoke was the corporate spokesman at their national heaqdquarters. This is a matter of corporate policy he was told, so all their theatres would have the same policy, unless there was one or two renegade theatres that would buck corporate.

I’ve been enlisted and I’ve been a student, income has everything to do with it. I served because it was the right thing to do, not so I could get cheap seats at the movies.

Do you offer a military discount at your company? What about your husband’s? I’m not trying to be rude, I’m just curious.

Let me see...I'm in the military and can write a list as long as my arm of all of the places that I don't get a discount. So what?

I do know of a few places that do give them, and I go there (Moe's Southwest Grill, for one).

That was my point, but I think you were better at saying it. For a “Conservative” site, we have a lot of non-Conservative ideas here.

First of all, it’s not that my son wants cheap movie seats. It’s the principle of the thing. I know his buddies didn’t go to college to get cheap seats either.

As far as my husband and I, first of all, we don’t own our own business, but if we did, and we were to offer discounts to students, we would most definitely offer discounts to the military.

It’s never the “liberation” of Iraq from terrorist sponsoring evildoers that were a threat to the free west.

It’s always the “invasion” of poor little innocent Iraq.

Lefties are such naive’ twerps.

This is a little off the topic, but it made me think of this:

When I was in college, I decided to take a break from studying for semester exams and go to a college basketball game at the university I attended. I called ahead to find how much student tickets were so I could get enough money out of the ATM. I was told $8.00

I show up at the box office and present my student ID and ten dollar bill, and tell her one student ticket. She looks at me and states, “Your not in high school”

“Excuse me”

“Yes sir, student discount are for high school students”

I replied, “Let me make sure I have this right, a high school student gets into the game at a discount, but me, a college student that is paying tuition to attend here has to pay full price?”

“Yes”

and that’s why I to this day will not support the college I graduated from and throw all requests for alumni contributions in the trash.

If they can’t afford to give military discounts they shouldn’t give student discounts.
