Firefighters inhaled as ton of pot burned, chief says

EDINBURG, Texas (AP) -- Firefighters who spent half an hour fighting a blaze in which 2,000 pounds of marijuana went up in smoke breathed so much of it that they would have failed a drug test, a fire chief said.

It took more than 35 firefighters, 1,000 gallons of water and five gallons of chemical suppressant to extinguish the warehouse blaze on Wednesday, Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were investigating the origin of the drugs.

-snip-

Snider said Thursday the firefighters were exposed to so much marijuana smoke that they would not be able to pass a drug test, despite wearing air packs to prevent them from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes.

There is another point here that needs to be made.

It could’ve been something less innocuous than pot.

The fact that they can be exposed to an unknown aerosol or particulate at every alarm is enough to keep this from being remotely funny.

19 years as a cop I know a lot of firefighters, and most of them have a great sense of humor. Humor is how they deal with a lot of things.

No one on this thread has been less than respectful, IMO.

I would point you to 9 firefighters dead this last week in Kentucky.

Just what kind of flak are you the firefighters were killed on a roof in Charleston, SC.

As I said on another thread, I picture the firemen acting like Sgt. Stendenko at the end of “Up in Smoke.”

“Well, if you believe all the anti-dope freaks on this site, all these guys will now descend in a death spiral into hell, start using harder drugs, cause wrecks and kill innocents, abuse their children, lose all ambition, etc. etc., etc.”

Oh, absolutely. Look for them all to be hard-core heroin addict moose molestors within a month.

Hence, the munchies comments. I honestly believe that the firefighters would enjoy the comments being made here, and have probably made many of the same themselves.

That's the truth of it. In hindsight they'll be joking about this one for years; it'll become a station legend to tell rookies. It's harmless in the long run and a lot nicer than most things emergency personnel have to deal with.

"Snider said Thursday the firefighters were exposed to so much marijuana smoke that they would not be able to pass a drug test, despite wearing air packs to prevent them from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes....."

==============================

....And that was before the fire, and the 1,000 gallons of water was for the bongs!

(J/K, please don't zap me)

This was a gateway fire. Next these guys will be putting out cocaine fires, heroin fires, and finally after that they will end up in alleyways putting out crack pipe fires.

Well: I have been retired for 18 years, It was 1 1/2 inch back in the good old days. The days of the back step firemen.

Back in those days you hung on to the bar.
You wore a mask if one was available.
we had long boots. made from rubber.
We had MEN on the line. 5’8” minimum height, weight in accordance with height.Had to pass a written test, physical and agility test. No lowered standards.
When the man said layout, you came off the step with 50 feet of hose in your arm. whether the wagon was stopped or not.It was seldom stopped for a layout.
The line man had a 15 minute mask.
2 1/2 inch supply lines that were made of cotton that you had to change every week so it wouldnt rot or get moldy.
A hose tower where you hung it when it wasnt used.
A rope in that tower to pull it up. No winch.
We changed the oil and greased the apparatus in quarters and then scrubbed underneath with a varsol rag. Once a month whether it needed it or not.Winter and summer.

Air Conditioned crew cabs??????? What were they? Unheard of.
In fact until the riots of 68 the wagon was convertible cab winter and summer.
Windshield wipers on both sides of the glass. Most of the time they didnt work. The shop expected the wiper blades to last the life of the piece ,which was 20 years.Small pieces of apparatus that could go into the alley’s not these monsters that you need to get a step ladder to climb into the hose bed, and need 40 acres to turn around.
