Immigration reform is dead. But before conservatives who killed this bill start popping champagne corks, they ought to consider the following.
Our borders will be less secure, not more. Employers who want to do the right thing and only hire legal workers won't have the tools to do so. The 12 million illegal aliens who are here now will continue to live in the shadows, making them less likely to cooperate with law enforcement to report crimes and less likely to pay their full share of taxes. In other words, the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse.
But you won't hear this if you tune in to talk radio over the next few days or read conservative blogs. There will be lots of gloating over having killed "amnesty." There will be claims that senators finally "listened to the people." And, no doubt, some conservatives will be emboldened to consider the next step in their war against illegal immigration, namely to deport those now here illegally.

But none of this matters to the radio talk show hosts who encouraged their millions of listeners to shut down the congressional phone system with calls protesting "amnesty." Nor does it matter to the myriad direct mail outfits opposing immigration, which will reap tens of millions of dollars in donations to fatten their coffers as a result of this "victory."

Hi Dane! I knew you were still alive. Still awaiting your responce about the 2/3rds of freshmen Congressman voting FOR Tancredo's bill to deny federal aid to sancurity cities for illegals. Kinda weird how they'd all vote that way when "every" candidate who ran on illegal immigration in a contested seat was defeated, eh?

There is NO TRUST that Jorge would EVER mean his facile lines about, “Of course, border security and enforcement must come first.” we know that thousands of agents have been approved and 800 miles of fence, but NOTHING done. Sell that tripe to the Polish Navy Jorge! We have been down that primrose path with “we will not engage in nation building” and we “will be fiscally responsible.” Once burned, shame on you,... twice burned, shame on us!

1- We don't need your permission to be "emboldened" in our own country
2- Tell your buddies in La Raza to start their promised marches "that could become violent". I dare you.
We've had enough of the likes of you. Your camp is right, this ain't over yet. We'll start a campaign to enact the 10/2006 signed bill to build the fence and enforce the sieve, err, border. We'll write local laws to punish the employers who hire illegals and kick them out for good.
This invasion by flag-burning,crotch-grabbing, finger-flipping thugs will not stand.
And let’s also take down the artificial barriers that prevent government agencies from reporting illegals to the INS.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the fence will cost $3.2 million a mile, Congress voted to hand DHS just $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2007 for construction. DHS needs to use half of it for other purposes besides the fence like technology and roadways. With say half of the 3.2 left what do you get...a little over 150 miles of fence? It's a down payment on 700 miles ....and they ain't getting no more now. In addition the Dems are already working on the "Dream Act".

Chavez is trolling the same bogus line about this being a ‘good deal’ for conservatives because we’d get all these ‘wonderful goodies’ with the amnesty.

the only reason this would be so would be that Bush does even less that before - out of spite. THERE IS NOTHING STOPPING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION FROM BUILDING THE 800 MILES OF FENCE ALREADY AUTHORIZED AND PAID FOR. And he can always call in the National Guard like he did last year.

So we are to believe employers cant figure out if they are hiring illegal aliens today? And we cant simply fix *only that* in a law? Why not?

Most illegal aliens would GET MORE GOVT BENEFITS if they were granted citizenship, so for taxpayers it is plus for them to stay ‘in the shadows’.
As for the issue of criminality, we are taling about 12 million people who disregard our immigration law... now how does forgiving that help improve “rule of law”? It doesnt, but it does the exact opposite. Especially since even petty criminals and people subject to deportation orders could get the special deal.
ANOTHER REASON THIS PRO-AMNESTY BS IS FOOLISH:
In 2006, the GOP led Senate had more than 60 votes for a liberal amnesty bill.
In 2007, the Dem led Senate tried but failed to get 60 votes for a slightly stricter amnesty bill, but which was more generous on the amnesty (everyone before jan 1 2007 gets in).
In fact, enough squishy support peeled away that it didnt even crack 50 votes.
... I PREDICT THAT IN 2008 THEY WILL TRY ANOTHERE RUN WITH A NARROWER BILL. MAYBE THE DREAM ACT. I hope they fail again with whatever amnesty/ahamnesty bill they put forward.
EACH TIME THEY TRY AND FAIL, THE MORE PROGRESS *WE* MAKE BY EXPOSING THE REAL PROBLEM AS A LACK OF BORDER SECURITY AND UNWILLINGNESS TO ENFORCE THE LAWS WE ALREADY HAVE.

I am sure that plenty of illegal aliens appreciate the employment from bosses, but that’s its not ‘silly’ to wonder if a Secty of Labor should be blase about labor laws.
Also, not good to have something that tripped up Clinton appointees trip up a Bush appointee. They needed better vetting.
