Bush Is Prepared to Veto Bill to Expand Child Insurance

WASHINGTON, July 14 — The White House said on Saturday that President Bush would veto a bipartisan plan to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program, drafted over the last six months by senior members of the Senate Finance Committee.

The vow puts Mr. Bush at odds with the Democratic majority in Congress, with a substantial number of Republican lawmakers and with many governors of both parties, who want to expand the popular program to cover some of the nation’s eight million uninsured children.

Tony Fratto, a White House spokesman, said: “The president’s senior advisers will certainly recommend a veto of this proposal. And there is no question that the president would veto it.”

Uninsured = a euphemism for illegal alien children... I'm shocked, shocked Jorge W. is going to veto an entitlement for THEM. Where's the compassion?

This is all well and good, and one of the few times Bush actually acts like a conservative. The problem is that he is too inarticulate to convey WHY he is obligated to veto it, thus leaving him and the Republicans up to the media trashing them all as wanting kids to die of miserable disease to protect the rich. I can’t wait until we get an articulate, CONSERVATIVE president; I just don’t know who that is in the current lot of nominees.

Utter nonsense.

Many small employers offer very expensive coverage for anyone other than the employee, so childrens' coverage is frequently unaffordable for the low paid.

You got that right - I am shocked, too. I guess W realizes he spent too much on that Rx program for Medicare.

The NYT endorses a special referendum to have only cigarette smokers vote upon this bill since they will be the ones paying for it. </s>

Which insurance companies that are sure to extract windfall profits from the taxpayers for services that will never be rendered on children are behind the lobbying on this bill?

“insuring children” is a big big big scam

The problem is that nearly all the funding in this bill is actually for coverage of ADULTS not children. Minnesota, for instance, spends 92% of its SCHIP funds on adults. Adults are dropping their private and employer based coverage to take the government coverage. People then have to work to keep their incomes low so that they stay qualified, and the cycle of dependence begins.

The problem with SCHIP and most government programs are the maze of procedures and entities people need to deal with in order to enroll. Nearly all states are quite under enrolled on their eligible children, often by 30% to 40% or more.

Never forget, government healthcare is also welfare for government workers and fat, non-profit NGO’s.

Texas passed a bill that allows disabled adults to buy into the Medicaid program. Good idea - they pay a discounted premium and are allowed to work and make more money than the eligibility maximums for Medicaid. The intent was to get folks off welfare and into the workforce. To date, four people are enrolled. The problem is not that the disabled don't want to work but that nobody knows enough about the program to help them sign up.

Great point.

I’ve worked with some of these groups before. They seem to exist mostly to just collect their pay and push paper around. They actually help shockingly few people.

Just a small suggestion... when we see President Bush do something that does not get our blood pressure up and screaming on the pages of FR (and Lord knows that he has gotten me so mad that I have destroyed keyboards), when he does do something RIGHT... maybe we can encourage further improvement by supporting those moves we agree with. Constantly bashing anyone will not alter behavior... but positive feedback does and will.

I’d greatly like to see any positive movement to the right during the next two years... even if it is only to block the dims “march to marx” that they incessantly drive towards.

it is very difficult for taxpaying americans to afford the insurance...but the lib/dems want more tax dollars to give it free to illegals....
