A 39-year-old man was found dead in custody in Malmö on Saturday morning. The man had committed suicide, a day after being told that he was to be deported to France.
He had been in custody for almost three months while the appeal court considered his case.
"The fact that he had a negative decision from the appeal court did not mean any special measures from our side. Here we have a normal daily routine with such decisions," said the head of the Malmö remand centre, Hans Svensson.
The 39-year-old, who was a Swedish citizen, had not been under special supervision. He had contact with staff during mealtimes, showers and walks.
He was not considered to be a high suicide risk since the crime he was alleged to have committed would not result in a harsh sentence if he was found guilty.
Nor did the man react particularly strongly on Friday when the verdict came from the appeal court. Staff informed him that he was entitled to appeal to the Supreme Court.
The man was found dead just after 8am on Saturday, less than 24 hours after the appeal court's decision. He had hanged himself from the toilet door frame with torn sheets.
Police carried out a search of the cell on Saturday. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is to launch its own inquiry.

- I’m not French (I’m from Sweden), But I’d like to point out that they could probably beat the US in some major sports.
In France, the French are known for their fighting spirit.
And the inmates (and Guards!) wear berets and smoke cigarettes while looking bored!

In America, the french are known as the ungrateful Europeans that we saved from Germany twice. As for beating the US in major sports,
1) In the 2004 Summer Olympics, the US had more gold medals (36) than France had medals total (33)
2)In the 2006 Winter Olympics the US had 25 total medals, to France's 9
3) Women's armpit hair cultivation is not a major sport

Actually, you are right. We DO make fun of the French a lot for their current foreign policy...
But when you look at the history of France -- it is steeped in blood. The Romans, The French - English wars, The French Revolution, two World Wars, Vietnam, Algeria... I may have miss some more but still... the French fought and bled all throughout history.

Sure. But if you look at it from their point of view, they probably feel humiliated because they had to be "rescued" by a backwater country...
In truth... the whole world was unprepared for the Nazis. Everyone was so sick and tired of warfare from WW1. And then comes along a madman who convinced an entire nation (which he was NOT a natural born citizen) to conquer its neighbors.
I think the French had one of the most advanced defensive armies in the world at the time but it was no match for the Nazi new military style of Blitzkrieg which involved, tanks, motorized infantry and bombing runs.
They fell to the Nazis in 1.5 months and surrendered when resistance was hopeless.
And it was very humiliating experience and a real, real sore point to be rescued by us. And you could probably throw in wealth envy as world leadership envy in it too...

- What you wrote above is all true, even though French feminists probably would get all enraged and worked up by the #3 claim.
Still, I claim that certain European nations could beat the US in a (rather) big sport like ice hockey. Perhaps even in an (unfair) sport like tennis.
