Tonight Show's Jay Leno Jokes of Priests as Pedophiles Six Times in Five Weeks

By John-Henry Westen

NEW YORK, July 26, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Catholic League has revealed a sustained attack against the Catholic Church from Jay Leno, host of the Tonight Show.   Describing it as "Jay Leno's obsession," the League points out that in the past five weeks, the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" has ridiculed priests six times and the pope once; all of the priest jokes were sexual in nature and painted priests as molesters.

·   June 18: Robin Williams gets into an extended diatribe about priests as pedophiles

·   June 20: Leno cracks a joke about priests as pedophiles

·   June 21: Leno makes a joke about a drunken pedophile priest

·   July 12: Leno ridicules the pope for restating Catholic doctrine on salvation

·   July 18: Leno portrays all priests as pedophiles

·   July 23: Leno jokes about priests using the Harry Potter books as "bait" to lure kids

·   July 23: Leno tells a story about a priest who pays to see a male stripper at a gay nightclub and jokes that the priest was cheating on his altar boy

"Hypocritical priests make for good script, but in the world Jay Leno apparently lives in, priests have a monopoly on hypocrisy," Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented.  "This would seem to suggest that either he is clueless about other expressions of hypocrisy, or there is a strong animus against Catholicism at work. If it's the former, the Catholic League can be of assistance-we track lots of hypocrites, many of whom live in Leno's Hollywood backyard. If it's the latter, we suggest he knock it off."

God Bless the Boy Scouts!

How they get slammed for barring Homosexuals! And that is the RIGHT thing to do.

So how much shame is the right amount?

The amount it takes to get the Church to kick out every pervert in their midst.

I think you might see some humor in this true story.

Recently I was working on landscaping my yard. I figured I’d do it myself rather than pay a professional several thousand dollars. So I’m out there working through the heat of the day, digging up roots, putting down top soil, planting shrubs- the works. It got pretty messy. Toward the end of the day a woman pushing a stroller walks by and calls out to me. I did not hear her at first but eventually saw her waving at me. I stood up to address her and noticed she was talking in a very slow, loud voice. “Ex-cuse... me..., doooooo yoooooou haaaaave aaaaa nuuuuumber?”

I wasn’t sure what she was talking about and I guess my expression showed it. She cautiously approached me and asked “Isssss youuurr bossssss commmminnnnnng byyyyyy soooon? Iiiii haaaave soooome woooork foooor yoooou”.

What? What was she talking about? I replied, “huh?”

“Whhhhaaaaat tiiim-o issss youurr boosss commmming toooooo piiick yoooou up?”

“Lady, I live here.”

Her face turned beat red and she scurried off down the street, baby stroller in tow.

Even the ones they don’t know about?
Even the accused who are innocent?

And why is there never credit given for what the church has done? Have you volunteered at your parish lately and seen what the volunteers have to do? Have you talked to a priest about what he has to do or the steps he needs to take to remain in his ministry?

I was raised a Catholic but have had nothing to do with the church since I was old enough to make up my own mind...And the church leaders decided long ago that in the case of pedophile priests, the survival of the church was more important than the well being of flock.

Amen.

"Six times in five weeks..."

Six times a night would still be showing restraint.

Many of them are, many more are dead.

And many more are still running around - It's like rats. It's not how many you get rid of, it's how many are left that counts.

Somebody’s job is to watch tv, and count the number of times their particular group is ‘persecuted’, in their opinion? Sounds like the Vatican version of CAIR.

His name's William Donohue, and he's the President of the Catholic League. And he has issues with "secular" Jews.

And what exactly do you propose the Church do?

The settlement came down on July 13th.
So how about the jokes before that date?

The topic pre-dated the settlement because of pre-trial publicity. This settlement took place as they were preparing to seat jurors.

The multitude of sex scandals (and the way they were handled), the preaching of Santa Claus socialism and cheerleading for illegal immigrants has this RC looking for a new church.

Rather than hide and transfer, expose and cooperate in the criminal prosecution. CERTAINTLY this will reduce future payoffs to future victims. If the church heirarchy vigilantly rooted out the rot rather than became a haven for it, then the issue wouldn’t have gotten as big as it is today.

Another thing- I tend to fit the physical profile of the 19 terrorists on September 11, 2001. So whenever I travel I always make sure to plan additional time because 9 times out of 10 I am asked to step out of line for additional screening. Of course the occurences have diminished in the recent past since it has been deemed a bad thing to profile someone based on their looks.

As for the lady with the baby stroller, I laughed. My wife was in tears from laughing so hard. Even my neighbors got a big kick out of it. Anyone I share that story with finds it funny.

My point is, I look the part. TSA agents would see me and think “oh yeah, better check this guy”. This woman saw a hispanic man working on a yard in a fairly nice neighborhood and she automatically assumed I must be the hired help. Some people hear the word Catholic Priest and they think of a joke about pedophiles. Comes with the territory.

Got any examples of Leno telling jokes about any of these protestants?

I agree and the Church is doing this, perhaps not as quickly as many would like, but it is still moving in the right direction.

You left out their absolute support of gun control as well.

Well perhaps if the Church had not tolerated fags for so long, they wouldn’t have this problem. Suppressing natural sexual urges as sin doesn’t help much either. Throw out the fudge-packers, and let these guys marry and have kids, and see this abuse disappear.

It would help if the bishops who were behind the cover up criminally prosecuted as accessories after the fact or at the very least were transferred to 200 sq ft churches on indian reservations in North Dakota or someplace where they could get back to basics.

Those "protestants" aren't a single, worldwide organization which refused to turn over known pedophiles to the legal authorities, and who continued to employ said pedophiles, shuffling them from location to location to avoid prosecution, and then copped plea deals with prosecutors to avoid taking the witness stand.

The story isn't the abuse - it's the protection racket and issue avoidance that went on for decades. There's no similar story there with "protestants", so there are no jokes to tell.

And would this be the responsibility of the Church or the authorities in various localities?
