Posted on 08/01/2007 10:27:02 PM PDT by AngelesCrestHighway
A Memphis, Tenn., man is in critical condition Wednesday after his dog shot him in the back. Police say King George, a 150-pound Great Dane, accidentally knocked a .22-caliber pistol off his owner's end table around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The gun went off, hitting his 21-year-old owner in the back, "I knew he was smart, I didn't think he was that smart," the victim's fiancee, Miesha Lucas told MyFOXMemphis.com. "He was always protective. I didn't think he would be like that." Police refused to name the victim as they do not plan to file charges in the shooting, which they've ruled as accidental. Lucas told MyFOXMemphis.com that she fears what her fiance will do to the pet once he gets out of the hospital. The shooting occurred in the Raleigh section of Memphis.

"They may not have been much, as nads go... but, by God, they were MINE!!!"
“I didn’t think he would be like that.”
WTF? Keep the dog, dump the broad.
I can see this being made into a hit country music song.
The article yesterday was “Man’s Best Friend Shoots Owner”
Now that’s cold.
Whenever my dog draws down on me, he is facing in my direction.
I can outdraw him though...
Same with my pooch.
I outdrew him 2 out of 3 times. :-)
“I shot my dawg ‘cause he barked at you”
I think the dog shot the wrong person...
The trick is having a spare #2 ready in case the lead breaks.
I’m 3 for 3...
“Keep the dog, dump the broad.”
Leave the gun, take the Spinone...
Yeah, tell me “no table scraps”, will ya?
No dog shoots me and lives!
It sounds like a case of attempted Arkancide
I don’t think the dog aimed the gun. The owner left a loaded pistol on the end table at 2:30 AM. Not too smart unless you are really expecting trouble.
...back shootin' son of a bitch!
All joking aside, I don't believe the story. It is a bizarre variation of the 'my dog ate my homework' excuse.
I am reminded of an old Gary Larson cartoon. A man stands in the doorway of his house looking out at his front yard. A dog is pushing the man’s lawnmower in erratic and uneven swaths. The man yells, “Bad dog! You call that mowing the lawn?”
“Lucas told MyFOXMemphis.com that she fears what her fiance will do to the pet once he gets out of the hospital.”
Okay, I know that this may not be a top priority, but given that statement I think that the dog should be removed from the home. The fiance obviously knows the kind of person this man is, and I don’t think it’s worth the risk.
As usual, the headline is sensational and designed to grab our attention. As usual, the actual article tells a different story. For this and many other reasons, the mainstream media have absolutely no credibility.
Man’s best friend... HA!!!!
Lucky the dog wasn’t a Jack Russell or the poor bastard would have been garroted.
We have a huge dog that is part Great Dane and I could see this happening. When ‘Tank’ sees that we’re going outside, he gets very excited and starts running around like a nut until the door gets open and he can dart outside. His tail could be considered a lethal weapon and has knocked lots of stuff off tables with it.
It seems a little odd that the girlfriend said something about the dog being 'protective' ... makes me think that maybe he was hittin' on her when the dog coincidentally knocked the gun off of the table. Maybe she and the dog should get lost before the guy gets out of the hospital.
spinone = spaniel?
They said it was a great dane, not a spaniel.
You're right, the Spinone is smaller than a great dane, bigger than a spaniel...

I was thinking the same thing. Chihuahua Gom Jabber.
The dog was reportedly overheard asking, “Where’s Michael Vick, I want him to say ‘hello’ to my little friend.”

Thankfully, my dog only unloads on the lawn.
Guns don’t kill people. Dogs kill people...
But spinone is italian for spaniel. Italiano spinone literally means italian spaniel in italian. Translate cocker spaniel to italian and you’d get something like...spinone cockerano. A spaniel is nothing more than a dog that likes water, I believe. So technically, poodles and labs are spaniels by one definition anyway. Usually though, in america we reserve the “spaniel” label for hunting dogs that have curly or semi curly hair, or wirey hair along with a love for water and very pronounced webbing of the toes. They also typically have heavy droopy ears.
Both these traits, by the way, the droopy ears and the webbed toes, are characteristics of puppies. It makes one wonder which trait was the primary trait that was intentionally bred for and which ones were the unintended side effects. The most important traits of a hunting dog is obedience, submissiveness, and the desire to please. These are puppy traits as well. Skill, athleticism, and intelligence are secondary. Appearances are at the bottom of the list.
It’s more than a little curious that the personality traits most conducive to hunting seem to be “attached” to the appearance traits that people find so endearing. Actually, to me it’s so far beyond curious that it is utterly fascinating.
THIS IS FOR EVERYONE HERE:
You shouldn’t believe everything you hear in the news. They took bits and pieces from an interview and made it world news. They are lucky they weren’t sued for misrepresentation. Also “the fiancee” is the great man in the world, and he would never hurt that dog. What they fail to mention is the person breaking into the house. That’s why the gun was out, they were being chased away. The dog got happy and anyone who knows about Great Danes, know they have very powerful tails. That dog was treated like royalty. He had his own room and everything. The comment about “the dog being smart” was taken from a conversation that made more sense for the situation. In other words they didn’t show what was said before or after that statement. It would have cleared a lot of things up. The guy wasn’t being an idiot, he was protecting his family. You people are ridiculous. Sorry it took so long to post something, but try learning how to walk all over again and see how long it takes you.
