:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Disaster Looms in Pakistan

Decorum was abandoned as accusations ricocheted between the wood-panelled walls of Pakistan's national assembly on Monday night. "Murderers! Murderers of innocent people!" screamed an MP from a religious party, his yellow turban shaking as he wagged a finger towards the government benches.

Five female parliamentarians, their faces concealed behind black and white burkas, slapped the benches with open palms. Another mullah stood up and started shouting. The speaker strained to maintain order.

Others were less captivated by the debate on last month's siege of the Red Mosque, in which more than 100 people died. One man snoozed at his desk. Across the vast hall others started whispered conversations. And high above them Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a dapper man with a pinched, clean-shaven face, looked on impassively from his giant portrait on the wall. Full story...

Expert: No Hard Proof for East German Shoot-to-Kill Order”

“A stretch of the former Berlin Wall on the Thuringia-Bavaria border

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An expert on killings along the former German-German border told DW-WORLD.DE that a recently discovered shoot-to-kill order is irrelevant and will not spark new criminal probes that some politicians are calling for.

Berlin state prosecutors have said they’re considering opening a new criminal investigation into deaths at the Berlin Wall after a document resurfaced that contains orders to “stop or liquidate” anyone trying to escape to the West, including women and children.”

Updated: 07:02, Wednesday August 15, 2007

Bundeswehr | 15.08.2007
“Germans Reported Among Victims in Kabul Explosion”

“Two German military vehicles were involved in the blast, according to initial reports”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Three Germans in Afghanistan have been killed in an explosion Wednesday, according to preliminary Afghan police reports. It was unclear if the blast resulted from a bomb attack or a landmine explosion.

The Germans were part of a convoy outside the Afghan capital Kabul, the city’s deputy police chief Zalmay Khan told reporters.

A spokesperson for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said an explosion occurred near a military base but could not confirm any troops were killed.

Without giving further details, the German Defense Ministry said no Bundeswehr troops were involved in Wednesday’s explosion.

Eyewitnesses told reporters they saw an explosion involving two German military vehicles traveling on a gravel road and that three bodies were later transported from the scene by helicopter.”

RELEASE No. 20070815-07
August 15, 2007

Iraqi Special Operations Forces, U.S. Special Forces detain rogue JAM brigade leader, three cell members
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Special Operations Forces, with U.S. Special Forces as advisors, detained four suspected members of the rogue Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, including a brigade commander, Aug. 14 in the Baghdad area.

The Shi’a extremist brigade commander directs more than 150 insurgents who conduct improvised explosive device and indirect fire attacks against Iraqi and Coalition Forces in the area. Reports indicate the brigade commander and his team buy and sell weapons in Sadr City and transport them to Al-Hurriya.

Additionally, the commander allegedly directs the extra-judicial killings of innocent civilians and government employees who oppose their criminal activities. Further intelligence shows the group also sets up illegal checkpoints to stop and hunt down Sunni citizens.

The commander’s rogue JAM cell developed an extensive and complex system to use cell phones and laptops to detonate IEDs in order to ambush and kill Coalition and Iraqi Forces and citizens.

On the way to detain the brigade commander, Iraqi and U.S. team members came under ineffective small arms fire. No U.S. or Iraqi members were harmed in the intelligence-driven operation.

The men are currently being detained for questioning about their alleged actions to attack and kill Iraqi and Coalition Forces, and other various illegal activities.

Iraqi Army, U.S. Special Forces detain Shi’a extremist leader
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Soldiers from the 8th Iraqi Army, with U.S. Special Forces as advisers, conducted a raid in eastern Najaf Aug. 14 and detained a former battalion commander of the rogue Jaysh al-Mahdi militia who is currently suspected of leading an independent Shi’a extremist group.

The former commander’s Jaysh al-Mahdi cell is suspected of conducting aggressive insurgent attacks using explosively formed penetrators throughout southern Iraq during late 2005 and early 2006. After leaving Jaysh al-Mahdi, he allegedly formed an independent cell of more than 150 Shi’a extremists that is believed to have conducted attacks on Iraqi and Coalition Forces. His cell is also believed to have taken part in the August 2006 battle in Diwaniyah, fighting against Coalition Forces.

No Iraqi or Coalition members were harmed during operation.

Iraqi Army, U.S. Special Forces detain 3 Al-Qaeda in Iraq high-level leaders
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BAGHDAD – Soldiers from the 1/6th Iraqi Army Scouts, with U.S. Special Forces as advisors, detained three suspected key Al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders during an intelligence driven operation Aug. 14 in the Mansour area of Baghdad.

The forces detained an alleged group leader and both his cell leaders. Both cells traffic weapons into the Mansour area and conduct mortar and rocket attacks to harm Iraqi and Coalition Forces.

One cell leader is suspected of coordinating extra-judicial killings against innocent civilians and Iraqi government personnel. Intelligence reports indicates the other cell leader finances al-Qaeda with money supplied to him by foreign associations and has also orchestrated numerous vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks against Iraqi military and political figures.

The forces also seized weapons, ammunition, military uniforms, and computer equipment at the detainees’ locations.

No U.S. or Iraqi members were harmed during the operation.

“Calling China’s Bluff “
By William R. Hawkins
FrontPageMagazine.com | 8/15/2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “In 1999, Senior Colonels Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) stirred up an international controversy with their book Unrestricted Warfare. Published by the PLA Literature and Arts Publishing House, it carried the mantle of official doctrine. It argued that in the new world of high-technology and globalization, war will not fade away as liberal Western economists predict. Instead, “war will be reborn in another form and in another arena, becoming an instrument of enormous power in the hands of all those who harbor intentions of controlling other countries or regions. In this sense, there is reason for us to maintain that the financial attack by George Soros on East Asia, the terrorist attack on the U.S. embassy by Usama Bin Laden....in which the degree of destruction is by no means second to that of a war, represent semi-warfare, quasi-warfare, and sub-warfare, that is, the embryonic form of another kind of warfare.” The inclusion of financial attacks with terrorism as part of a conflict in which “there are no rules, with nothing forbidden” has worried American bankers and Treasury officials ever since.

The Chinese officers asked, “Can using financial instruments to destroy a country’s economy be seen as a battle?”

Finding an answer to that question took on renewed importance after London’s Daily Telegraph reported that Beijing had sent an “economic threat” to the United States.”

“US Military Sees Looming China Threat To Satellites”
The Times of India ^ | August 15, 2007 | The Times of India

Posted on 08/14/2007 9:02:59 PM PDT by JACKRUSSELL

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA) - China may be just three years away from being able to disrupt US military satellites in a regional conflict, a senior US military leader said on Tuesday, citing a recent anti-satellite test and other advances.

The warning came amid calls at a conference in Huntsville, Alabama for intensified efforts to ensure US “space superiority” in the wake of China’s shoot-down January 11 of one of its own satellites with a ballistic missile.

“It is not inconceivable that within about three years we can be challenged at a near peer level in a region,” said Lieutenant General Kevin Campbell, head of the US Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command.

“That means taking out a number of communications capabilities over a theater of war,” he added in a speech to defense contractors.

Campbell later told reporters that while a number of countries have some capabilities to interfere with satellite communications, China is the one he is most worried about.

He said its anti-satellite test in January was a clear demonstration of its ability to destroy an orbiting satellite.

But China also is developing satellite jamming capabilities and has made advances in computer network attack skills that point to a comprehensive approach to denying the US military access to space in a conflict, he said.

“It starts to add up that they’ll have multi-dimensional capabilities to attack various systems that are in orbit today,” he said.

“A lot of countries have pieces of what I’ve described, but I would say I’m more concerned about China than any of them,” he said.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Putin has been steadily cultivating his tough-guy image in recent months.

He has warned President Bush that he would be prepared to aim Russian missiles at Europe if the U.S. goes ahead with plans to install missile defence systems in the Czech Republic and Poland.

And he sent a submarine out to plant a Russian flag under the ice at the North Pole, staking a claim to the oil and gas deposits beneath the Arctic.”

Russian, Chinese troops practice for war games

MOSCOW: Russian and Chinese military transport planes dropped more than 200 paratroopers and heavy weapons during a dress rehearsal on Monday for a massive joint military exercise by the two former Cold War rivals, the first on Russia’s territory.

A 1,600-member Chinese military contingent backed by aircraft, tanks and other heavy weapons has travelled to the Chelyabinsk region in Russia’s Ural Mountains for the war games, to be held on Friday and watched by the leaders of Russia, China and other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The SCO, which also includes four ex-Soviet nations in Central Asia, was created by Moscow and Beijing to address regional security threats, foster economic integration and counter US influence in the strategically placed, energy-rich Central Asia. The manoeuvres will follow an SCO summit in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A criminal investigations report says several U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services employees are accused of aiding Islamic extremists with identification fraud and of exploiting the visa system for personal gain.

The confidential 2006 USCIS report said that despite the severity of the potential security breaches, most are not investigated “due to lack of resources” in the agency’s internal affairs department.”
