Newark Police Director: Immigration Status Of Schoolyard Slayings Suspect "Irrelevant"
Millennium Radio New Jersey ^ | Wednesday, August 15, 2007 | By: Martin Di Caro

At a news conference on Tuesday, Newark Police Director Gary McCarthy said the immigration status of a chief suspect in the murders of three college students behind an elementary school August 4 is "irrelevant."

"What's relevant to me is that they're murderers, and what's relevant is that a heinous crime has occurred," said McCarthy.

Jose Carranza, 28, one of three suspects so far charged in the execution-style killings, is an illegal alien from Peru. However, despite his many encounters with the legal system, his immigration status wasn't determined. Had federal immigration officials known Carranza was arrested in connection with child rape allegations first in January and then again in May, they could have immediately moved to detain the accused at his bail hearings. But federal officials were never notified. Carranza posted $150,000 bail and was freed in late May.

McCarthy contended there were no guarantees the feds would have acted. "They might have and they might not have," he said. Before he could be asked another question by reporters, Newark Mayor Cory Booker interjected. "It is no way the obligation of the city police department to bo going around doing the work of [Immigration and Customs Enforcement]." Booker added that talk focusing on Carranza's imigration status could have a chilling effect on immigrants in his city. He said immigrants, both legal and illegal, are routinely picked on by criminals.

Booker and McCarthy revealed no specific information about the ongoing hunt for three more suspects, two of whom are juveniles. The 24-year-old being sought, Rodolfo Godinez of Newark, was a fugitive on the night of the murders and has been for four years. He became a fugitive in July 2003 after failing to appear in Superior Court on charges that he robbed and attacked three people in Irvington a year earlier, according to court records obtained by the Star-Ledger.

The news conference was called so Mayor Booker could unveil a street surveillance program he says will reduce crime in the city's most dangerous neighborhoods. The multimillion dollar program will saturate high-crime areas with cameras and gunshot detection technology. The total number is expected to reach more than 120 when all are in place by next summer.

I live in north NJ and the average person is totally sick of the illegal ownership of our old neighborhoods. When you speak English around here people look at you like you have 2 heads. The politicians are ALL in on the deal too. There will be a backlash, mark my words, people have HAD IT!

Bears repeating.

Given that the threat is an admission of guilt, the judge and jury are superfluous.

irrevelant?....not by a long shot.....

if someone had put a hold on this guy, he would not have killed 3 kids and probably raped another, if rumors are true.....

this would be analagous to a cop stopping someone who had no brake lights and finding out that he also had a woman tied up in the backseat with duct tape.....you can stop major crimes sometimes by stopping the little ones....

true....the worse issue is WHY anyone would get bail a 2ND time for heinous crimes .......

but New Jersey...black citizens....Rats....you all enjoy your paradise there.. with your arrogant pompous police men and DA's and judges....they will not protect you and they could care less about your children....but look out if some white teenager wears a shirt with a Dixie flag on it.....

I live in a central Jersey town that is awash with illegal immigrants. Of course, businesses and pols look the other way. I notice one outstanding feature: almost everywhere you look there is a young hispanic woman pushing a baby in a carriage. I’m not against hispanic procreation: I’m just pointing out there’s a lot of anchor babies, future school bilingual schoolkids, and from my experience at the supermarket, a lot of new food stamp recipients.

Guess who pays for all this?/sarc

Have you seen one illegal alien from Mexico, just one, a Mexican citizen commit a murder and receive the death penalty?

Newark area Senator Ronald Rice didn't speak tough on immigration when he sponsored this bill in 2004 allowing them to qualify for in-state tuition rates at public institutions of higher education.

I’m thinking the same thing too. My business is here and I’m wondering how much I can do effectively living elsewhere and visiting now and then.

In a few more years, the unfunded pensions and the health benefits given to Corzine’s girl Carla will completely bankrupt the state for future generations.

The State is being sued and Corzine specifically for his emails to her on state business. He’s trying to block it and the judge has said hand it over.

It could get ugly. :)

NJ is not as corrupt as ancient Rome. Ancient Rome was much more efficient. NJ is a disaster of ripoffs that the public pays to line the pockets of elected officials heres. Developers go to jail, mayor goes to jail, Hoboken is a great town but desperately trying to turn around the Hudson County sewer of Democratic politics.

Menendez is now a neighbor here in Hoboken. Not sure where he lives. Called his office many times during the illegal immigration scam, spoke to his staff, and blasted them all to hell. His staff member was smooth and knew the facts. He was shocked that I could counter him on everything. In the end, he said I knew what I was talking about.

I just said, I’m not the only one.

Told them I would be organizing a protest outside of Menendez’s home and would protest if the Senate bill moved forward on the immigration scam. Then I said I was sorry for being so angry but let them know I was serious. I said I would be more polite at the protest than they were to US citizens.

Menendez was one of the architects of the scam. Watching him on the Senate floor lie made my blood boil.

As for the backlash I have no idea what you are talking about. The PC here is the highest probably anywhere and nothing is going to change. Nothing at all.

NJ is going to sink and when it does it will shock people. By then it will be too late. This after already having the highest property taxes in the nation.

The Mexican embassey must have jumped off the tortilla when that happened. I thought we agreed not to execute any Mexicans in order to keep extradition doors open.

Well of course...All these Americans being slaughtered by people in this country illegally is totally irrelevant. It's just meaningless.

So if Newark Police Director Gary McCarthy’s daughter, son, wife, and Grandmother are slaughtered like chickens by those in this country illegally, there immigration status is really just meaningless, and shouldn’t even be mentioned.

Is there any reason to think that these murders might have been part of a scheme to frighten blacks out of the neighborhood and allow the perpetrators or whoever they worked for to move in and turn the neighborhood into an illegal immigrant barrio?

They don't need any excuse. They just take over by shear overwhelming numbers, while our leaders wave them through, as they duck behind armed, gated communities, surrounded by rings of security.

The point that seems to elude that idiot is that if Immigration had done their job he/they would have NEVER have been here in the first place. The fact that he was a rapist and had a long rap sheet and STILL was off the radar makes checking immigration status all the more important. We could laugh at such a comment if it weren’t for the fact that that sort of PC stupidity endangers us all.
