It's been a hoot reading and listening to pundits and armchair legal analysts speculate on the fate awaiting Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick on charges of illegal dogfighting.
First the easy part: You can expect Vick to be handed a harsher sentence than the one year being bandied about by some observers.
The judge has already said the acts described by Vick's co-conspirators suggest "aggravating" circumstances. Often that means a sentence more harsh than lenient.
With Vick as the major, if not only, source of funding for the operation, it's likely the judge will view him as the ringleader of the enterprise.
The federal guidelines generally suggest a sentence of anywhere from 12 to 18 months for the crime to which Vick will plead guilty. My guess is that the judge may well hand down a longer jail term. Why? Because the men who pleaded guilty ahead of Vick will probably get the stiffer end of the suggested sentencing range, or about 18 months.

The Blacks that I talk to are educated and class people, yet they are making excuses for Vick, like, there is a lot of dogfighting in the country, and that it is only about dogs, etc.
There is nothing unusual about racism among blacks and everyone knows it.
“If it really is a cultural thing, it’s time to seriously adjust the culture.”
You nailed it.
well, what more can be said?
hmm..actually, the nails are pretty.
Good point. It is just that I work with a lot of smart educated Blacks, and they are generally rational, until something like this. Just like OJ.
The only real question the NFL has is “Can Mike Vick sell tickets?”. If the answer is yes, he will play again.
He will atttempt to create a “redemption story” and sell it to the NFL as a profitable storyline. And it will work.
Vick will play in the MFL again. Guaranteed. As long as Jerry Jones and Al Davis are owners, there will be a market for these types of guys. He will do a “I was wrong dance” and beg forgiveness and donate millions to the animal rights groups to silence any protests they might have. He probably will not have any money left after he gets out of jail, so the funds will have to come from future contracts.
What a tard. Of course he will play football again. Some intellectual over at Town Hall with a tampon shoved up his rear.
I say Vick should play football again only with a large portion of his salary going to the SPCA enforcement. Would go a long way towards helping stop other animal cruelty instead of just letting his arse rot in jail he’d actually be repaying his debt to society and the animals he tortured and killed.
” When something offends the female population overwhelmingly, such as this Vick thing, it will STOP.”
Agreed, now unleash some of your anger on Hillary...... Please
You cannot provoke civilized debate if you are uninformed regarding the reprehensible issues in this matter.
I pray that his cell mate is a 7 foot tall dog lover.
If the NFL holds serve, Vick will get a 1 year suspension after his time in prison. That probably means he will by back in the league in 2009.
Actually it’s the NAACP’s character thats being judged and shown for the slimy disgusting organization it is in it’s support for Vick. The NAACP is a criminal organization.
Well ain't that special.
I’m not a psychologist have read enough to know that people who abuse animals ALSO ABUSE HUMANS!
Vick is a violent thug who should have done to him what he did to those dogs!
Brother I hear you, but let’s be fair. What we prize here on this site I believe foremost is the respect and liberty of the individual. I was almost always treated with respect by a great many people who didn’t know me. My attitude was why should I feel or act different if I’m the minority in this situation. Almost always, I was reminded of how colorblind others could be when I was the sole minority. It’s an interesting experience.
Okay, I’m not touting that, just mentioning it in the context that many individuals go through this and of course that’s an individual experience. Public expenditures and the programs designed to “help” these communities have often as we are all too aware done more to destroy them than help them.
As for the absolute degrading impact of rap, you ask why middle class blacks have yet to “condemn and exponsge” the gangstas among them? That’s a funny question. Rap was founded originally with a positive message about how the community was being destroyed by drugs and how it should be stopped. That was back in the beginning.
Now if you think that’s been replaced by something negative, I agree 100%.
But who’s cashing in? And who’s buying all this garbage?
Let me answer it this way. I was lending a parking pass in my neighborhood a few years ago to a guy from Long Island. He was about 10 years younger than me and when I got into his jeep, I immediately was struck by the sounds. I call is sounds because it made noise, not music. I looked at the guy and said why don’t you listen to rock and roll?
So here’s your answer: White Suburban Punks. They are driving the sales of this stuff and who’s selling it? Warner Brothers and their Interscope division and who have you.
The black middle class has been growing rapidly. But they don’t set the sales marks for all this stuff debasing the culture and “their” community. That actually comes from guys like Gerald Levin at Warner Brothers and the “angry” white males who buy and listen to this stuff.
Of course you have black “artists” too getting into the game. But in the end, it’s a debasement sold for the green, not black, not white.
And society across the board pays for it. When I hear people talking about hip hop I laugh. I say, oh that’s how you describe rap today to make it sound less offensive.
Like crime as a whole, this stuff has a heavier price in a black neighborhoods.
And it’s a damn shame.
How is Vick being put in jail not a just price and message to society. I like the idea of Vick in jail just fine.
Some folks might agree with me.
That is not true.
Everyday blacks sit on juries that put away black criminals.
What we are seeing is the extreme left element of the Black community getting the most air time.
The polls that I have seen is that the majority of blacks are not supporting Vick.
Excellent point!
