It was Letterman. Does the Daily Mail need to have the concept of a ‘joke’ explained to them?

“Yet again our founders protect the country from the stupidity of its voters....”

The founders had no idea that we’d last this long and get this stupid. I believe we have FDR’s run to thank for saving us from another run by slick Willie.

Will these two ever go away.

Hopefully we'll be rid of them in 75 years or so...

Maybe, maybe not.

“While it is clear that under the Twelfth Amendment the original constitutional qualifications of age, citizenship, and residency apply to both the president and vice president, it is unclear if a two-term president could later be elected—or appointed—vice president. Some argue that the Twenty-second Amendment and Twelfth Amendment bar any two-term president from later serving as vice president as well as from succeeding to the presidency from any point in the United States Presidential line of succession. Others contend that while a two-term president is ineligible to be elected or appointed to the office of Vice President, he could succeed from a lower position in the line of succession which he is not excluded from holding. Others contend that the Twelfth Amendment concerns qualification for service, while the Twenty-second Amendment concerns qualifications for election. Neither theory has ever been tested, as no former president has ever sought the vice presidency, and thus, the courts have never had an opportunity to decide the question.”

From usconstitution.net:

22nd Amendment

Since the presidency of George Washington, only one thing could be said to be totally consistent - that no President had the job for more than two full terms. Washington had been asked to run for a third term in 1796, but he made it quite clear that he had no intention of doing so; that an orderly transition of power was needed to set the Constitution in stone. And so it was for almost 150 years.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was first elected President in 1932, and re-elected in 1936. When it came time for the Democrats to nominate a candidate for the Presidency in 1940, two things had happened. First, the Republicans had made great gains in Congress in the 1938 elections. And Hitler happened. Europe was in the throes of a great war, with trouble in the Pacific, too. A change away from Roosevelt, who had led the nation through the Great Depression, did not seem wise. He was nominated for an unprecedented third term, and won. It was not a landslide victory, however, and it is debatable that FDR would have had a third term had it not been for the war. When 1944 rolled around, changing leaders in the middle of World War II, which the United States was now fully engaged in, also seemed unwise, and FDR ran for and was elected to, a fourth term.

His life was nearly over, however, and his Vice President, Harry Truman, became President upon FDR's death less than 100 days after his inauguration. Though FDR's leadership was seen by many as a key reason that the U.S. came out of WWII victorious, the Congress was determined, once the war ended, to ensure that Washington's self-imposed two-term limit become the law of the land. Specifically excepting Truman from its provisions, the 22nd Amendment passed Congress on March 21, 1947. After Truman won a second term in 1948, it was ratified on February 27, 1951 (1,439 days). Truman could have run for a third term, but bowed out early before campaigning began.

She also remarked that if the Constitution didn't forbid a president from a third term, "he might be running.

Yet again our founders protect the country from the stupidity of its voters....

Actually, that one can't be attributed to the Founders. Washington set precedent by serving only 2 terms. There was nothing in The Constitution regarding presidential term limits.

We may need another amendment to get some new blood in and get rid of the family dynasty attempts. If Clinton is elected for 2 terms, there will have been a Bush/Clinton in the administration for 36 continuous years:

Bush1 VP 1981-1989
Bush1 Presidency 1989-1993
Clinton1 Presidency 1993-2000
Bush2 Presidency 2000-2009
Clinton2 Presidency 2009-2013 or 20l7

[That is too much of too few. It is not good for the Nation.]

Unashamed law breakers.

By “looking into”, they mean they looked for ways around the laws in the Constitution that forbid his running a third time; ways around the very laws that he once swore, and would swear again if given the chance, to uphold.

Yeah and why stop 2017? Jeb Bush can follow 2017-2025. Chelsea Clinton will be old enough then to take over. LOL.

On Thursday's show, Clinton recounted a summer in Alaska during which she donned boots and an apron to gut salmon with a spoon.

This sounds like another one of her tall tales like the farm in Chicago or being named after Sir Edmund Hillary. Has she ever even been to Alaska?

I’ll bet he did look into it.I wonder if she thinks she would be safe with such an arrangement. He wants back in the Oval office as much as she does, and unlike Hillary, Bill doesn’t need his spouse.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told a talk show her husband, Bill, had "looked into" running as her vice president.

I predicted this here on FR in 2000!

Yet again our founders protect the country from the stupidity of its voters....

Actually, it was the 22nd Amendment.

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.

“Under Hillary?
That would be something new for him.”

Not at all......Bill was a figure head playboy. He enjoyed the lifestyle, money, woman, fame.

Hillary......power hungry! I think she ran the show.

Not so much our Founders as some mid-twentieth cewntury politicians (although Washington did set up the two term tradition, which FDR ignored).

We desperately need term limits for all U.S. Senators and Representatives. In general, the worst, most self-serving individuals in Congress are those who have been there the longest. These people are causing great harm to America and her future.

Is that really true? I thought no one could be VP who was not eligible to serve as president, as he would not be.

eligible to SERVE as president or eligible to be ELECTED president? there's a big difference.

Pretty sad, if true, that a former President of the US is not aware of the requirements for the VP (that he be able to serve as President, which BJ Clinton could NOT because he has already served the maximum of two terms).

I think what he was looking into was how to “spin” (lie about, misrepresent) the requirements of the veep so that he could serve as veep while the law forbids it. That makes more sense, knowing what a bunch of scumbag criminals the Clintons are and their mafioso-like machine.
