Ron Paul: Highways claim more than 9/11 killed
Baltimore Sun ^ | 9/22/07 | Rick Pearson

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul contends that the federal government has overreacted by limiting personal freedom in the wake of terrorist attacks six years ago, noting more people die on U.S. highways in less than a month’s time compared to the number who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

“We have been told that we have to give up our freedoms in order to be safe because terrorism is such a horrible event,” Paul said today to more than 1,000 supporters who attended a rally at a downtown Chicago hotel ballroom.

“A lot fewer lives died on 9/11 than they do in less than a month on our highways, but once again, who owns the highways? Do we own the highways? No. It’s a government institution you know. …We need to put all this in perspective.”

More than 2,970 people were reported dead in the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Federal highway traffic statistics show an average of 3,509 people a month were killed on the nation’s highways in 2001.

Paul's equivocation is mind numbing! How can a seriously reasonable human of even AVERAGE intelligence fail to note the hatred and planning directed toward the effort of terrorists to kill thousands of us in a heinous act. But we must blow it off as being in the same category as highway deaths? Not likely!

This man's reasoning is seriously flawed. I don't want him in congress, much less near the White House. He needs to join the Dems as he is already gone over to the dark side.

LOL, they do that, huh? Guess I didn’t pay attention to voter-cheating until Gore. That really was a turning point, at least in my mind.

he's making a damned fool ideological argument.

Ron Paul believes that words should mean something. We've had six years of war rhetoric, yet bin Laden is not in our hands. The borders are open. Islamic immigration has increased. Saudis send suicide bombers to kill our troops in Iraq at will.

Ron Paul knows that our liberties have suffered, and we are no closer to winning the war than we were before. It should be the other way around.

Yes, Ron Paul knows that ideas and words mean something. That is why he avoids war rhetoric as much as possible, instead preferring to talk about restoring our liberty. He is correct.

Hey, Code Pinkos! Throw out all your antiwar signs and get your @$$es on the asphalt, to block traffic on those deadly freeways like I-80, 280, 480, 90, 95, etc...vehicles are the real killers. [/s]

How much dough is Ron Paul receiving from George $oro$ or other left-wing donors? I believe McCain got some $oro$ cash back when he was still viable. The DNC playbook includes ‘divide and conquer’ and they’ve been successful at it.

It would be interesting to estimate how much of Paul’s notoriety is being propped up by the DNC, as a way to peel off many Independent Conservatives to increase Her Heinous’ chances in 2008.

The rats did something similar in 2006 on a smaller scale, to grab DeLay’s district by backing a marginal candidate, just a few 1000s of lost votes may have made the difference.

Excuse me, Mr. Paul?

What freedoms have I lost since 9/11?

Are you referring to the Patriot Act, which targets overseas transmission with the wiretapping program? How does surveillance of overseas communications with TERRORISTS steal freedom from me? Hmm?

Ever since his popularity with the anti-war faction on the Internet skyrocketed, he’s been going further and further off the deep end.

There was a time when I would have considered voting for Ron Paul because, while I disagreed with his foreign policy ideas, I at least believed they were rooted in Constitutional principles.

He's long since crossed the line from responsible opposition to a policy he disagrees with to making common cause with our enemies. Today, rather than criticizing what he sees as a flawed policy for fighting terrorism, he is downplaying the very threat of terrorism itself. These are not the words of a man who, as so many of his supporters here insist, is serious about fighting Islamic terrorism without being "distracted" by "nation building." Can anyone read these words and honestly believe that Ron Paul would fight our enemies aggressively, so long as it's done in a Constitutional manner?

He's become so wrapped up in his role as the only "antiwar" Republican candidate that he has adopted, wholesale, the rhetoric of the peace-at-any-price, anti-American left. Some may call this a foot-in-mouth moment, but if that's true, then it is only the latest in a long series of them. The longer this campaign progresses, the more convinced I become that Ron Paul is more interested in preparing for a third party run as the common candidate of the moonbat left and the black helicopter right than he is of actually winning the GOP nomination.

I am glad that you are dialoguing with your son. I just worry about alot of other things Paul stands for. Having my son in the military is just one of them. Our military already had to recover from the shabby treatment that they had under Clinton. Pay, equipment, medical care etc. It was a disgrace. Under Bush its much better. much better. Pauls attitudes scare me. For my son ...for our nation underfire from terrorists.

“An armed citizenry is more than a match for terrorists.”

Really? A match for terrorists armed with nuclear and chemical weapons?

“If just some passengers and pilots had been armed on 9/11, we would have had 19 dead terrorists and few if any other casualties.”

Very wishfull thinking considering the terrorists would also have been armed, acting as a team, and with the elements of surprise and training on their side. If you’re USMC as your screen name seems to signify, you should know that five trained men working as a team can whip many times their number of untrained and surprised individuals.

Actually, Ron Paul is correct on this subject.

I'm getting pretty sick of the "War on Motorists" myself.

No one suggested anything remotely like what you just said.

Yes you did. You have been saying, as Ron Paul did, that the chance of getting killed due to a terrorist attack is much lower than getting killed in an accident on the highway, getting struck by lightning, etc. Before the first attack on the WTC, the chances of getting killed in a terrorist attack were zero. Then the chances went up after the first attack on the WTC in 1993, and again the chances went up (considerably this time) after 9/11/01. With each successive attack on our soil (not to mention the numerous attacks on our interests outside of this country), the chances get better and better. So please enlighten me and tell me what exactly you are suggesting. Just how many American deaths does it take before we take radical Islam seriously and try to eradicate it?

I didn’t realize there was a concerted effort by terrorists to kill people on the highways.

The terrorists don't want them killed, they just want to take away their money, their stuff and their freedom.

Ron Paul thinks the bigger threat is the government, not the terrorists.
