Fred Doesn't Fall: Thompson makes it through his first debate
Slate ^ | October 10, 2007 | John Dickerson

Posted on 10/10/2007 8:54:59 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

If Fred Thompson is lazy, he sure didn't act it preparing for his first debate. Over two weeks, the former Tennessee senator and his aides held more than half a dozen question-and-answer sessions. Bush's first economic adviser, Larry Lindsey, was involved, as were Vice President Cheney's daughter Liz Cheney and GOP veteran Mary Matalin. There were also two full-blown rehearsals in which Liz Cheney's husband played John McCain, Rep. Adam Putnam stood in for Mitt Romney, and former New York Sen. Al D'Amato played Rudy Giuliani. To add verisimilitude to his character, D'Amato pretended to take a phone call in the middle of one session.

The preparation paid off. Thompson didn't win the night—Rudy Giuliani did—but he got through gaffe-free and at times seemed informed and in command. He came off as genuinely unaffected instead of irritatingly folksy. This may seem like a limited achievement, and it was, but Thompson has had such tough going recently that even a limited success is a win for him. Nervous staffers can now feel a little better about their boss, and disaffected GOP voters anxious to believe that Thompson is the candidate they've been looking for were given enough material to extend their dream.

The low expectations that Thompson cleared were a little phony. In retrospect, it shouldn't surprise us that an actor trained in memorizing short snippets of dialogue was able to perform in a setting where candidates are cut off if they speak in anything but short snippets of dialogue. But for those who watch debates like car races—only for the crashes—Thompson's first appearance had offered promise.(continued)

Sure does. I have been telling my youngest brother about Duncan and have been sending him emails to educate him. Last nite, I went to pick him and my 13 yr old nephew up to go out for supper. His son was on the computer and asked his dad who he liked for president. My brother said Duncan Hunter, why? Nephew replied he just took an online test and found out he agreed most with Duncan Hunter. He had never heard of Hunter so was impressed that his dad supported him, too. Ron Paul and all the dems were at the bottom of his list.

Before I talked to my brother about Hunter, he had never heard of him. That is our challenge, to educate the public. The more one learns about him, the more they like him. Duncan Hunter is an easy sell to educated people.

Of course they are! She’s a female Santa Claus with a big bag of goodies bought with your & my money! Of course the underclass and illegals will be voting (several times each) for her. The dems might not even have to bribe as many voters with smokes and Thunderbird wine as they did in 2000!!

Fred did fine. What's more is that he appears to be the most electable conservative candidate on the block. I donated a 2nd time already. I'm glad he's out there now, the race is taking on more shape and we can start taking on serious debate.

We have a choice: A socialist, socialist weenies or a conservative who will help in the fight to preserve your freedom and keep you from being turned into a socialist slave.

Wish Hunter could make a stronger showing, perhaps in the next administration?

I see Congressman Hunter as a possible Secretary of Defense, Homeland Security or Veterans Affairs. What do you think? Fred08 - Contribute Now

I've seen "Secretary of Defense" suggested on several occasions, each time by Freepers more knowledgeable than me on his qualifications.

The biggest thing I got out of the debate was that Ron Paul lives in an alternate reality. His commentary regarding "Imminent Attacks" was jaw dropping.

The Secretary of Energy and FEMA director are usually military veterans or people familiar with that area, as well.

Thompson didn't win the night—Rudy Giuliani did

Why is Duncan Hunter getting no respect for his performance? I'm a Fred guy, but thought that Hunter had an amazing evening.

Good. I don’t think I should drink and ping.

I've gotten in trouble numerous times for freeping after a late Saturday night at the bar. It's like anything else, it's fun at the time, but the next day when you go and analyze what you actually did, it becomes really embarasing.

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I took one of those tests and agreed most with Hunter, Paul and Thompson, in that order. I was happy to see Hillary at the bottom of that list though.

This former 96D has been rooting for Hunter for SoD for quite some time.

Bartlett is on Laura Ingraham’s show backpeddling furiously over his comments with regard to Fred. He is claiming that he was talking about Fred’s campaign not getting into the thick of it right away. (Yeah, right.)

Laura is making those, “Mmm Hmmm” sounds she does when she doesn’t believe someone. LOL.

Fred is the only candidate that can beat the Hildebeast666.

Rudy is a mirror image of her on social issues. I think the left would love to see him as the Repub. candidate because their pro-abortion, pro-homosexual policy wins on election day, either way.

I don’t really drink much, actually. My sister and parents were here in July, and left half a bottle of wine in my fridge, and I just threw it away, untouched since they left. :)

Skipping your lithium? You know, I like your guy Hunter a lot and will write his name in if Fred isn’t the nominee. But you are a real crackpot.
