UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Mom was just telling me about her new next door neighbors. They just moved into the house yesterday after transferring in from Hawaii. Welcome to wildfires in the San Diego back country. The 2003 fires forced my sister to evacuate and the ash fall was probably the cause of my father's acute respiratory distress syndrome in Nov 2003 followed by his death in Dec 2003.

With San Diego being around the size of the state of Connecticut most here are not really affected especially here in the city along the coast.

This is insane scanner traffic....fire just blew over Hasley Cyn...I dont know how these guys are going to get out.....

I moved here from Germany while in the service in 1980. One day after shortly after I arrived they put us on looting patrol during the Panarama Fire in San Bernardino. Next thing I knew we were chainsawing off roof eaves when they caught fire on half million dollar homes, there was no water pressure to hose off the homes up near Devore that day.

That was my introduction to Socal and wildfire.
