LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

As Arsted pointed out, just like in military CAS (Close Air Support), you need low and slow drops. The fast movers (DC-10) muck up the choreography

Based on what I know from her, I feel pretty good in saying that where she lives should be ok. I think she’ll be out a few days, but I think at the moment, all is as fine as anything else is down here.

We’re hearing they’re still concerned the fire will come down behind Tierrasanta and could impact that area depending on what happens with winds...which means if it makes a run...that’s bad for what’s left of SD that’s been safe so far.

We need to pray for calm winds tonight and aircraft getting up and making drops. They’re saying it looks like Armaggedon here right now as it is.

My folks were out on 15 north trying to scope out some of our homes we have no word on yet, and they said the number of fires still visible in the RB area and along the 15 corridor is unbelievable and that images on TV don’t even remotely touch what it’s like when you actually see it...and that’s not seeing the burned out areas yet...just where you can still see flames.

Anyway, got dovetailed, I ::do:: think CLD is ok (her home, I mean) as things currently stand...but it’s very influx here, too.

Yes, Green Valley Lake near Running Springs, just west of Lake Arrowhead.

I just took a drive over into western San Bernardino since we have been smelling those Rim fires all the way in Rancho Cucamonga since this afternoon. What a trip. Drove up the 15 to the 210 then drove the 210 to the 215. Saw no fires west of the 215. Did see a small fire with 2-4 engines working it at the 15 and 210 interchange. They had just put it out. There were about 7-8 overturned big rigs. Sustained winds on the freeways was at least 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Lots of blowing debris and dust. Could not see the fires up on the rim of the world, but the smoke was still blowing straight south and was lying low over western San Bernardino. There must be lots of fire up there but it is not coming down the foothills yet. I think the reason the smoke is traveling west from San Bernardino is due to the constant winds traveling down the Cajon Pass. They are sucking the smoke from the rim fires out to the west and southwest right over Rancho Cucamonga. So we have no danger right now of the what happened in San Diego where fires apparently traveled over 20 miles in a day. What will be a danger is if a fire gets into that Cajon Pass wind tunnel. I think they have engines just waiting around putting out any trouble there right now. There were miles of Semi trucks stopped in the slow lane of NB 15. Waiting for the wind to stop. Will also have to worry if the Rim Fires start driving down the foothills with the winds at their back. Hope everyone is safe up on the Rim. No one posted on the Butler II thread since I did 2 1/2 hours ago. They must have all evacuated and western San Bernardino is almost too smoky to stay the night right now.

When I went by the I-210 / I-15 this afternoon there was one tractor trailer over and one camper smashed and wrapped around a light pole.

Going to work this morning there was 4 trailers over and one on front of me trying to make it 5. He got up on 9 wheels twice and I finally punched it and got around him before he locked up the freeway. I thought about grabbing the videocam for some action shots but it would have been my luck he would have tipped it right as I reached for the cam.

Our old home is right next to Twisted Branch. It’s one of the many in Bridlewood Estates in Poway that’s gone. Twisted Branch, Horizon Court, Country Day. By some miracle I know they saved (for the moment) the home of my friends on Windpiper there.

It’s unbelievable here. That picture times thousands.

Better safe then sorry, but you probably could have sold that video.

Unfortunately Poway/Ranch Bernardo/Escondido are still having high winds all evening and into the night so far, and high winds predicted for SD through Wednesday. Those are areas still pretty volatile compared to others. It’s pretty deceptive if they only show SD b/c that area itself is quite low wind wise.

He is in the Navy, so they survived Ivan a couple of years ago while living in Pensacola.

I was working in Wilsonville, AL when Ivan came ashore. My flight home was scheduled for Friday, but the airport closed at 8:30 PM Wednesday night. I rented a car at the Birmingham airport and drove 1800 miles to Salt Lake City, UT in 46 wall clock hours to escape Ivan. I made one stop at Clarksville, TN and a second stop at Grand Island, NE on the way.
