A major character in the Harry Potter series is supposedly "gay," revealed author J.K. Rowling in a recent Carnegie Hall appearance. At the risk of giving the Potter books more publicity, which may be exactly what the author wants, I cannot resist the opportunity to comment. Actually, pardon me while I scream at the top of my lungs, just a little.
Here's my scream: "The Harry Potter books and movies are harmful to kids!"
For years now, some of us have been decrying the Harry Potter tales, saying they were not for children. They dishonor God, they glamorize sorcery, and the spirit surrounding the series is dark, sinister and anti-Christian. Teaching children positively about wizardry and witchcraft ought to have tipped off most believers, but no there were those who went out of their way to criticize those of us who were concerned, saying we were overreacting, that it was just harmless fun. These were just lessons in "good" and evil, with Harry, of course, being "good." So what does one do now that millions of children are totally devoted to Harry and the characters? Rowling is a master manipulator. The affiliations have taken hold. No matter how you try to shield kids, they are sure to learn online or at school or somewhere that the admired headmaster of the Hogwart's school, professor Dumbledore, has been pronounced "gay" after the series is complete. What does a true Christian parent do with that information?

Im not commading or demanding or even spelling.
Of course not. But the trend of childrens literature taking swings at religion while those childrens' parents are attempting to raise them in a faith is a recent, or renewed, leftie-endorsed one. Think Slick Willie, for the chul-drun, leftie outcome based education. Just the changes during my son's attendance in grade school were amazing. And if parents espouse a certain faith and wish to raise their children in that faith but books written for their ages and pushed by the schools regularly attack that, well, parents ought to be concerned. Expressing concern doesn't mean we want them burned. Authors will write fewer books aimed at young children, bashing faith in general, if schools and publishers refuse to accept them.
So true. JK just wants another 15 minutes. It would be like Margaret Mitchell's estate claiming that the author wished to announce in 2007 that Rhett Butler was really gay all along.
Sudentenland,
The only zealot I’m seeing in this discussion is yourself.
You seem to be highly offended by what a reasonable parent would do to influence their children. Childhood is not young adulthood, nor is it adulthood. Childhood is generally thought to be preparation for adulthood.
Parents ought to and do indeed make discerning choices for their children, it’s all about formation, not just character formation, but also formation to prepare them for and adulthood that hopefully will help the future adult also be reasonable and discerning.
Funny, you don’t seem to be able to stay on point.
And, I’ll repeat, you write that parents making reasonable decisions about their children’s reading choices indicates some kind of zealotry, because....let me get this......you’ve never murdered anyone, some colleges have satanic mascots and the Marines have a mascot called “devil-dogs.”
Uhm......ok.... I guess the attempt at having an intelligent discussion ended right about there.
ho-hum....
“What witches?Duh, duh, duh! It’s fiction. There are no witches, only fictional characters.”
Are you saying God was hallucinating when He said to kill them?
the weak satanism arguments are irrelevant now.
J K Rowling has killed harry potter because she made it a devant sex issue.
Just see how many boys dress up for holloween as a character from the now “gay” series. (see also story about man who regrets dumbledore tatoo on his back)
The only “Harry Potter” anyone will be in danger of seeing will be an alternative lifestyle adult who drinks miller beer.
I am always offended by would be book burners, just as I am with would be witch burners.
