Thousands of teachers abandon Zimbabwe
Telegraph ^ | 18/11/2007 | Stephen Bevan

Zimbabwe's education system, once regarded as among the best in Africa, is in crisis because of the country's economic meltdown. Almost a quarter of the teachers have quit the country, absenteeism is high, buildings are crumbling and standards plummeting.

In one of the most shocking examples of the Dickensian conditions, a reporter witnessed hundreds of children...writing in the dust on the floor because they had no exercise books or pencils.

"Starting this term, we are supposed to buy our own teaching materials," ... "With our paltry salaries I don't see it working. We will just sit in the classes."

Absenteeism is rife. Concern Mkhwananzi, 42, who left three weeks ago to seek work in South Africa, said almost a quarter of his class of 45 pupils had dropped out. "They were coming to school with empty stomachs because there was no food at home," he said. "Then they would faint, so they preferred to stay at home."

Conditions at the universities and colleges are just as bad. Fees have skyrocketed, student grants are almost worthless and teaching is almost at a halt. At the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, disused offices and storerooms have been turned into makeshift brothels by students and staff who have turned to prostitution to make ends meet....

The tragedy is that the education system had been one of the few achievements of which Mr Mugabe could be proud...

Zimbabwe's education system, once regarded as among the best in Africa

When this was the case, was it called Rhodesia?

What a stupid analogy, Dickens' London and Zimbabwe.

And the article never gets to the point of why people are starving in Zimbabwe (once the bread basket of Africa) or why the education system is now in shambles. Liberals never think what they have done is wrong they just think they haven't done enough of it yet.

Ah, the gifts of Marxism/socialism.

And a special thanks to the worst President in history, Jimmy Carter, for “certifying” the fake elections of Mugabe and every other totalitarian thug on the planet.

Yep. You got it. After the sell-out and switch to "majority rule" ie. communist backed dictator, it was a race to the bottom.

Exactly, Liberals never take responsibilities for their failed policies, they act as if something mysterious happened:

“Right to privacy”..to do what?..Why commit infanticide of course.

Depose Rhodesia, now children are starving and a “who me” vocabulary begins to emerge.

...”Liberals never think what they have done is wrong they just think they haven’t done enough of it yet.”

That sums it up perfectly. And it’s more than just a symptom.

who have turned to prostitution to make ends meet.

Yes, you could say that prostitution is a way to make ends meet. That's as good a way to put it as any.

Even the best teachers don't want to work when there is nothing to teach with and no future for their charges. Zimbabwe is a dying society.

Already happening with another Carter-Certified country. This article might as well read: “Thousands of teachers abandon Venezuela”.

http://www.mequieroir.com/texasteacher_1107.phtml

This site (in Spanish) promotes emigration from Venezuela and includes this section on how educated Venezuelas can turn into bilingual teachers in Texas.

>Even the best teachers don’t want to work when there is nothing to teach with and no future for their charges

Sure they do. They do it right now, they do it right here.

What would be more proper would be:
“Even the best teachers don’t want to work when there is no union guaranteed job security, the ability to teach any agenda that they want, and no money to pay them to do so.

Nice little teaser video on the Rhodesian Light Infantry. I worked with the guy they quoted at 1:28 (Cpl. Keith Nelson) for about three years. The guy got out in time to save his family back in the `80's but could never quite disguise the hatred for what was done to them (the Rhodesians) by the communist suck-ups. I can not say on this forum just how criminal the switchover to "majority rule" was when they and Rhodesia were sold out, JR would never let me back in.

My CO in the Guard (Bob H.) and Keith soldered together in S.F. (Viet Nam) and R.L.I. What I learned from them I had a chance to teach to a few Marines that "utilized" that knowledge in Iraq.

Yea. Comes around – Goes around.

BTW, the pee-cee crap you hear from the "liberals," in other words the communists, is the same crap that Keith told me they were hearing there in Rhodesia before the sellout and jimmy carter fixing the elections.

Excellent detective work! The flight of the Venezuelan middle class has begun. “Little Venezuela” in Miami is the Doral neighborhood west of the airport.
