Obama: I Tried Drugs As a Teen

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama on Tuesday told high school students that when he was their age he was hardly a model student, experimenting with illegal drugs and drinking alcohol.
Obama stopped by a study hall at Manchester Central High School and answered students' questions about the war in Iraq and his education plan. But when an adult asked about his time as a student, Obama spoke bluntly.
"I will confess to you, I was kind of a goof-off in high school. My Mom reminds me of that," said Obama, an Illinois Democrat who grew up in Hawaii
"You know, I made some bad decisions that I've actually written about. You know, got into drinking. I experimented with drugs," he said. "There was a whole stretch of time that I didn't really apply myself a lot. It wasn't until I got out of high school and went to college that I started realizing, 'Man, I wasted a lot of time.'"
Obama has written about his drug use in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father."
"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final fatal role of the young would be black man," Obama wrote. Mostly he smoked marijuana and drank alcohol, Obama wrote, but occasionally he would snort cocaine when he could afford it.
Drugs, Obama wrote, were a way he "could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory."

It's a big deal for republican candidates like Bush in 2000. No big deal for Obama or "nose like a vacuum cleaner" Bill Clinton.
My husband never did. I never did willingly. Several of my cousins. All but one of my aunts. My SIL. As a matter of fact, I know lots of people who've never done drugs. (And waaaay too many who still do!)
ITOH, I do give BO credit for honesty and I don't think that one seriously stupid time-frame ruins a person for life.

I used to do a lot of coke in high school—when I could afford it. It was expensive, so that wasn’t very often. I quit after high school because I had a job, and needed to function at a much higher level. Random drug testing also factored in there somewhere. Never did it again. Never really missed it. I do drink coffee and a Red Bull every once in a while though.
I never tried anything as a teen...except chewing tobacco. THat didn’t work out so well for me.

Anyone catch Mitt Romney commenting today? He slammed Obamarama pretty good over his drug use and telling all about it for school children to hear. First thing Mitt has done to make me sit up and take notice.

You know, with Hillary’s numbers so very low in the believability and sincerity department, this might be a brilliant move on Obama’s part. He comes across as very open and honest in sharp contrast to HRC. In the big scheme of things, this could help him, a lot.

Honestly, I’m not sure Kucinich ever stopped.
Neither me nor my friends tried drugs, cigarettes or alcohol. Somehow we still managed to have plenty of fun without regrets.
Cheetohs did give us the giggles, though, but we limited ourselves to small amounts. : )
I smoked pot, every day in the Summer of 1987. I smoked pot from an almost two feet tall bong, a roach clip, a pipe, some boy’s mouth and a plastic gun that shot smoke out of the end(???). I wouldn’t do it today. I’m older, wiser and more CONSERVATIVE.
