Romney, Thompson criticize Confederate flag
CNN ^ | 11-28-2007 | – CNN South Carolina Producer Peter Hamby

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee criticized the Confederate flag, which happens to be hoisted on the Statehouse grounds in the early primary state of South Carolina.

[snip]

Both candidates are front-runners in South Carolina. Both may have to answer questions about those comments next time they hit the state.

“There is a lot more loyalty to the Confederate flag in the South, than there is to the Republican party.”

My loyalty lies with the Constitution and the values of the enlightenment. It doesn’t require a country or land...it just requires those whom desire freedom and law.

My underling thoughts are it’s a local issue, not a federal; which is the whole point of the dispute over the flag anyways. Whether it means something to someone here and mean another to another person over there...I don’t care.

agreed. when you get south of Fairfax County (as i am), you are in DIXIE & most folks here feel the same.

fyi, i call them DIMocRATS & CREEPS.

fyi, my friend Edward saw the following "bumper-snicker" on the back of a "cowboy Cadillac" (read: "jacked-up", 4WD, overpriced pickup, with TX plates) yesterday PM:

"I sure wish OJ Simpson had married Hillery Rodham."

otoh, i believe that Dr Paul has about the same chance that i do of ever being POTUS. GOOD guy, GOOD IDEAS, but NOT "electable". (PITY!!!)

may i humbly suggest that you check out posts 72,77,94 & 117, as i'm too lazy to repost them.

as i've said before (here & in other threads): IF the GOP wants to win the POTUS race, they will embrace the IDEAL that the "!@#$%^ government" needs to GET OUT OF every local/regional issue & FIRMLY state that, "it's none of our business what ___________ wants to do. it's called LIBERTY & DIVERSITY of interest."

The Romney campaign just posted a full page ad on their websight, to apologize for Romney's answer. They meligned the SCV, insinuating that the SCV was "just looking for publicity".

They don't realize that the League of the South and a number of other organizations are "chomping at the bit", and they have no idea how much "traction" the idea of Southern Nationalism has in this state.

Many of my Radio listeners want an "immigration station" on the Potomac River to keep the damyankees from moving South.

Grab your flags, and meet us at the Romney/Thompson/Gullianni/McCain't headquarters.

We care.

For us, it is a matter of family, and kinship.

More South Carolinians died under the Saint Andrews Cross of the Confederate Battle Flag, than have died under the Stars and Stripes, in all the wars that nation has fought, combined.

We take this issue, kind of personally. We don't like yankee republocrats, or democrains, telling us how to vote.

Frankly, we don't want to be a part of the same nation that you want. We want you to have your Socialism, your gun-control, your taxes, and your universal health care.

We want out.

We see Ron Paul as the last hope for a Constitutional America, and if he doesn't win, we just want to leave, with our land, our graveyards, our resources, and our children. Find your own military, if you can.

It doesn’t require a country or land

It does for us, Bubbba, it does for us.

I am still hunting deer and quail on the same land that my great-grandfather owned. Southerners still are tied to "the land", and we are probably a lot more "environmentally aware" than your Commie-pinko friends.

Get the government out of my life.

Vote Ron Paul

I lived in Columbia for seven years during the worst of the flag flap (1997-2004) and while I was sad to see it taken off the Statehouse dome, in the end, I believe where it is now, at the Confederate Soldiers Memorial, is a more appropriate place for it. An ANV battle flag flying at a memorial to South Carolina’s dead who fought under it seems like a fitting tribute.

It was funny to watch Joe Darby and Darrell Jackson and the “usual suspects” in the race-pimp community down there try and gin up some outrage, only to find that the vast majority of the state, on both sides, had moved on. Most of the flag supporters had made their peace with its location at the memorial obelisk, and the huge majority of the flag opponents had accepted the “victory” of its removal from the top of the Statehouse, and moved on. Seemed like that by 2004, the only people that gave much of a damn about the NAACP’s ludicrous “boycott” were the Democratic Party and the NCAA!

I don’t see where Thompson’s answer was wrong. As a part of a historical display, or a memorial, then a Confederate flag (whichever one, be it a battle flag or one of the National flags) is certainly appropriate. Flying over the actual seat of government? Not really. Maybe hoist one up for the day on Confederate Memorial Day, under the US and Palmetto flags.

Oh, BTW, has that crazy street person “Rev. E.X. Slave” tried to deface the Memorial again, like he did 3-4 years ago when he scaled the fence at lunch hour and burned the flag?

As a politician, you have to be careful about what you say about the Confederate Flag. It’s not right, but it’s true.

I think Thompson’s answer was sufficient, Romney’s was not.

Southerners who fail to realize this are just setting themselves up for more of the stereotypes that the MSM places on them.

"the Reverend E X Slave" is what we southerners call a "sad case". (this means that you are either/both too DUMB or "out of it" to be ALIVE.)

I worked downtown about five blocks from the Memorial, and saw all the commotion the day “Rev. Slave” pulled his little stunt, though I didn’t know what happened until I caught the news at home.

Worst part was, the Keystone Cops guarding the thing wound up pepper-spraying *themselves* when they tried to get him off his ladder, because they didn’t bother checking which way the wind was blowing. Gee, I dunno, maybe they could’ve checked which way the smoke was blowing from the ANV battle flag he’d just set on fire? Durrrrrr.

What are you talking about!? Commie...!? lol.

Sorry, chief...just because I don’t love your flag, doesn’t mean I’m a commie. I’m no ‘yankee’...lol. I’m from California, and I’m American.

The civil war is over.

i'm NOT impressed with the "security" at the statehouse.

what we REALLY need is more state constables who are former cops, rather than "somebody's brother-in-law or buddy.

i don't think he said that YOU were a "commie", but your STATE sent NUMEROUS "pinkos" (and some outright REDS) to congress, so you & the rest of CA are NOT without fault.

furthermore, the war between blue & gray will be over when one of two things is true:

1. the !@#$%^& government gets OUT of our homes/churches/businesses/LIVES & leaves us ALONE and/or

2. dixie is FREE.

He didn’t even know where I was from. I’m not exactly a liberal constitutent...just so happens I’m around a lot of them. It isn’t my fault.

Reagan’s amnesty is more to blame for making CA blue...than I.

Put them on the record.

"I'm glad people have made the decision not to display it as a prominent flag symbolic of something at a state capital."
-Fred Thompson Thompson's response, YouTube

"That flag is devisive and it shouldn't be shown."
