Toshiba, NEC Electronics to team up on 32-nm chips
Reuters ^ | Tuesday, November 27, 2007 | Mayumi Negishi

Posted on 12/06/2007 7:59:31 AM PST by SunkenCiv

Japan's Toshiba Corp. and NEC Electronics Corp. said on Tuesday they would jointly develop 32-nanometre chips to better keep up with rivals.

The companies will continue talks about jointly producing the chips, and aim to reach a decision in 2008, they said.

The two had also approached Fujitsu Ltd, but spokesman Etsuro Yamada declined to comment on whether or not Fujitsu would join the group, only saying that "Fujitsu was considering various options."

Chip makers are racing to halve the production cost per function of a chip every year or two.

Samsung Electronics Co., IBM, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd., Infineon Technologies, and Freescale Semiconductor said in May they would work together on 32-nanometre chips. A nanometre is a billionth of a metre.

The group has since been joined by STMicroelectronics.

Such moves have worried Japanese chip makers, which have been talking about but not acting on how to share the estimated 100-200 billion yen costs to develop the new chips, which would require less power to run more applications on cellphones, PCs and other electronics.

IBM Builds Nanotube Chip

[snip] Creating carbon nanotube transistors has been done before, but figuring out a reliable way to assemble them to form an IC has stumped many bright minds. Wiring together transistors developed from a single carbon nanotube is an even more difficult task. But the IBM research team did it. With an 18-micron long carbon nanotube, the scientists built a 10-transistor ring oscillator, a device typically constructed to test new manufacturing technologies or materials. Using one instead of many carbon nanotubes to build an IC reduces the manufacturing steps and therefore cost. [end]

Intel has begun production of 45nm chips (see other topic, to be linked below).

And that means they've already started design on their 32nm chips. From what I've read on how it works at Intel, this 45nm run is the previous generation design shrunk. While one team was trying to get the 65nm design to work at 45nm, they passed all they learned to another team working on the next-generation architecture at 45nm so they can concentrate more on design instead of the physics problems of a smaller process. This whole thing cycles for each die shrink.

But what that means is the guys who designed the 45nm current-gen are probably working on trying to get the current state of next-gen to work on 32nm. And the Japanese aren't starting work until 2008? They're behind already.

The 45 nm design also seems to have further reduced power demand. Of course, that's only in theory, because higher wattage is analogous to more cubic inches, everything else being equal. Meanwhile:
AMD Resurrects K8 Architecture for 2008 Roadmap
by Kristopher Kubicki
and Gabriel Ikram
December 5, 2007
Last week AMD CEO Hector Ruiz vowed that the company would stop hemorrhaging cash and return to profitability soon. "That is our number one goal right now," Ruiz said in a conference in Bangalore... The company will introduce eleven 65nm K8 processors over the next two quarters... Essentially, AMD will move any remaining Athlon 64 processors from the 90nm node to the 65nm node, with a few new frequency and TDP variations. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ will be the first to jump on the new 65nm K8 bandwagon with a 65W TDP. The previous Windsor-based chip of the same featured an 89-Watt TDP. AMD will also add 100 MHz to the core frequency of the Athlon 64 X2 5600+, now rated at 2.9 GHz. Total L2 cache will be halved in the move to the Brisbane core, and the updated Athlon 64 X2 5600+ chips will feature only 1MB of L2 cache. Availability of these processors is scheduled for Q1 2008... AMD will also update its "Energy Efficient" series and will release three new chips, the AMD Athlon 4850e, Athlon 4450e, and Athlon 4050e in Q2 2008. All of the new offerings will be based on AMD's Brisbane core and will feature a 45-Watt thermal envelope... All new Brisbane chips will be based on the Socket AM2 interface. These processors are compatible with AMD's AM2+ socket designated for Phenom processors.

You basically have three choices on a shrink: lower the power, up the clock or put in more stuff. Or some balance of two or three.

I'm sad about AMD because I've always liked their chips, and I don't know if they can weather being second-best as well as Intel did. We need competition, it's the only thing that woke Intel up from the Pentium 4 days to produce the great chips they make now.

AMD is #2, and it’s much smaller, and according to something I read a few weeks ago, its acquisition of ATI was financially difficult, and may turn out to have been a bet-the-company maneuver. AMD had planned to build a fab facility in upstate NY, but I think that plan has been on hold for while (could easily be wrong, but the website for the CoC there said that it was still coming, not already there). Meanwhile, Intel’s 45nm move will allow lower cost fab; add that to the at-least-equal capability, and it does look bad.

However, AMD will still have some internal design advantages, and will begin 45nm fab in a few months, cutting its costs and holding on to customer base. Its time of growth is over, unless it moves production to China / India. Of course, Intel has already started that direction, and there’s this:
