What Would Free Republic Do If Fred Thompson Is Not The Republican Nominee? (Vanity)
December 9 2007 | jveritas

It is very obvious that Fred Thompson is Free Republic most favorite candidate and by far. On the other hand every other top tier Republican candidate, Guiliani, Romney, Huckabee, and McCain are absolutely disdained by most Freepers. Therefore this is the important question:

What would Free Republic do if Fred Thompson is not the Republican Party Nominee?

Your NON vote IS a vote for the SOCIALISTSupporting conservatives is "SOCIALIST"?

What are you...a public school graduate? It's apparent you have no concept of how the American political system works. Supporting and electing RINOs does nothing for the conservative movement. If you wish to maintain your status amongst the RINO lemmings so be it. I personally will have nothing to do with pushing America to the left. Your theories are as washed up as the MSM.

Why put all this effort into speculation? How about waiting until we actually know who the party candidates are?

I’ll be sad if it’s not Fred but I voted for Ross Perot one time and gave us Bill Clinton. I won’t do that again.

Oh, oh....I just read that you are only 18.....you might want to educate yourself a little more. It’s great that you are in the “fight”....just don’t give up IF you lose THIS battle. People in this thread are talking about WHAT IF’s - what if they lose this battle (that’s what nominating our candidate for President really is - a series of Battles).....most of us will Not give up and NOT vote for the CONSTITUTIONALLY chosen nominee if we lose THIS battle for OUR NOMINEE, whomever we really want.

If it's Rudy, I predict much gnashing of teeth, rending of garments, and possible mass suicide.

Of course I'm joking, but given certain people's attitudes here, it might not be too farfetched!

Hey young’n settle down.....I did NOT say supporting CONSERVATIVES is socialist.....I said voting for someone OTHER THAN THE REPUBLICAN nominee will ensure a SOCIALIST PRESIDENT. Save your attacks for someone else.

My father served in the NH House of Representatives for two terms. I've been involved in the political process for over 10 years. I've probably met with more national politicians than you've seen in your lifetime.

You see, it's people like you that are willing to compromise principle over party. You are the reason we have NCLB, Medicare, Government operated prescription plans, open borders and the list goes on. Yup, I'm only 18 years of age but I'm the one getting stuck with the bills you create with your compromises.

BTW...please provide a link to the Constitution stating anything about primaries and nominees. Please show me where write-ins and 3rd party candidates a unconstitutional.

To equate McCain’s possibilities to Dole’s possibilities is apples to oranges.

You must not have noticed but the world has changed considerably in the past 10 years or so. Something happened called 9/11 and “most” people also changed.

The security of our country is paramount in “most” people’s minds and McCain has his faults, but his stance on the war on terror is not one of them.

You my FRiend need to step into the real world. Your arguments of old ceased to be relevant just over 6 years ago.

Good for you, good for your Dad....when you really grow up, get back to me.

You know NOTHING of me and how I fight liberal/socialism, do you?....because I don’t go around spouting the things I’m doing/have done. (I’ve been elected to public office, too, sweetie.) Get over yourself and take the chip off your shoulder while you’re at it.

I will back anyone that wins the nomination, even if its a loser like Hucksterbee.

The alternatives are worse.

Prior to Fred joining, there was a lot more support here for Hunter.

Ditto, but I would even hold my nose for Rudy if I had to.. Paul is the only candidate on our side that would make me want to sit it out.

I think there needs to be a clarification- no Freeper is/was purged just because they support someone, it is how they support that person and have dialog with other Freepers that usually causes the purge.

“Rudy’s not my man. Thompson/Hunter is my ticket.
But your refusal to vote for him, if he is the nominee, will help send the Nation off the cliff to rampant socialism, uncontrolled immigration and as yet unimagined challanges from our enemies.”

The problem is that voting for Rudy, or Huckabee or McCain would be every bit as likely to send the Nation over the cliff described above as voting for the Democrat or staying home.

Rudy, Mike and McCain have no more commitment to liberty as society’s organizing principle than Hillary or Obama. They are just Republican versions of the bipartisan party of government. Nor is any of them likely to prosecute the Arab and Persian War with any more vigor than a Dem. None of them has shown any indication that he understands what we are up against, or what it will take to overcome our enemies.

Roe v. Wade would be no more likely to fall if any of those three were appointing justices than it will be if a Democrat gets to pick. None of them understands why Roe was wrong or what a sound approach to constitutional interpretation looks like. The best we could hope for from any of them would be a stream of Anthony Kennedy clones. Personally, I’d rather have more Breyers. I’d prefer more Justices who are clearly wrong and wrong clearly to more Justices with heads full of mush who get it right now and then by accident.

Romney might be preferable to a Democrat, but then again, he might not. He is the classic pig in a poke. Since he will say anything the relevant audience wants to hear, there is no way to assess what a Romney administration might look like. Romney plainly holds no principle higher than his own ambition, and people like that are dangerous in high office. I won’t vote for him because I don’t trust him and I won’t take responsibility for him by supporting him, even as a last resort with Hillary as the only alternative.

If Giuliani, Huckabee, McCain or Romney is the Republican nominee 2008 we will have gone 24 years since the last time a movement conservative headed the Republican ticket. Conservatives can’t afford to wait another eight years for our next crack at taking the party back. If any of those four is the Republican candidate the best remaining scenario for 2008 is a Democrat victory followed by a conservative reconquest of the GOP.

If any of the fearsome foursome were to win the general election, which seems unlikely no matter what conservatives choose to do, it would be time to start talking about a third party because the GOP would probably no longer be useful as a vehicle for conservative politics.

So what to do if the GOP doesn’t nominate Fred or Duncan? Stay home and go to bed early on election day. Get up the next day prepared to deal as best you can with the wreckage.

Well, if Rudy gets the nomination (or Ronnie, which is highly unlikely), I guess I will be 'ensuring' a socialist president.

“The security of our country is paramount in “most” people’s minds and McCain has his faults, but his stance on the war on terror is not one of them.”

Yes it is.

Anyone who is obsessed with the comfort and convenience of captive terrorists simply isn’t serious about the Arab and Persian War. McCain has no clue how to deal with the situation we find ourselves in. He has a blinkered focus on Iraq and his idea that a marginal increase in troops was the key to our developing success there is both pathetic and foolish. If you want an effective war President, McCain should rank somewhere near the bottom of your list.

Don’t like it? Find a better Country with a better system of electing Presidents.....sheesh. Who would Rudy put on the Supreme Court? Who would Hillary put on the Supreme Court? How would Rudy deal with terrorists? How would Hillary? Rudy is NOT my first, second or third choice....but if he’s the nominee, I’ll have to vote for him, because OTHERWISE, as is continually repeated here, and was shown in the CLINTON/1st BUSH election of 92...not doing so helps elect the Democrat.

Doncha know? Republican Socialists are better than Democrat Socialists. (If only Brezhnev had thought to put a little “R” after his name...)
