In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.

President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

Right now I can’t afford $20 light bulbs.

Sad about GE not building factories here for the future. Eveyone seems to be selling us out.

We should stock up on the old bulbs and sell them as antiques....when the time comes.

They did such a terrific job with flush toilets!

After all, each flush saves a bunch of water! Never mind that it takes 3 flushes now to take care of the job!

Can the bombing really begin in 5 minutes yet?

There are LED replacement bulbs for the incandescents that work perfectly well and are on the market now. My wife and daughter saw them on sale today.

On "sale"? As compared to the incandescent - what is the price?

These people need to do some research before passing dopey bills. I heard somewhere about a big dust-up regarding mercury disposal in the new $7.00 florecent bulbs.

Another rumor is that the Prius is dirtier than a Hummer in terms of TOTAL pollution (batteries).

Being a leftist means never having to deal with the consequences of your actions, as long as you "meant well." For example, look at the disaster of MBTE. An oxygenator to help cut down on smog. Never mind that it's water soluable, which means that when it leaks out of the underground tanks, it pollutes the water table and is damned near impossible to get out of the water supply. So we have "cleaner" air, but can no longer drink the water.

Is anyone surprised? And these are the "experts" who are going to write laws to save us from "Global Climate Change!"

I have a front-loader that meets energy requirements and it gets stuff cleaner than any other machine I've ever owned.

This one is sold under the Kenmore label ~

I've been thinking of getting a new washer and dryer, until I saw the prices! Those efficent front loaders! Geez! I think that just the washing machine was over $1000! What model did you get, and how much did you pay for it? I should really get a new dryer too, but those new ones are quite expensive as well.

If they become banned, and congressman/senator caught with one must — MUST — be severely punished. Same goes with ALL global warming kooks (e.g., Al Gore, etc.).

If it gets out that they’re making us use non-incandescent, and they’re using them, the reaction is going to be unpleasant.

I don’t know, I wasn’t there. However, they are probably going to drop in price.

“I have high hopes that by 2012 that there will be very-highly-efficient LED replacements to eliminate the need for most incandescent lamps and CFLs.”

I hope you are correct!

Anyway, here’s a small glimmer of sanity in a story by Reuters:
“About two dozen categories of light bulbs are exempt from the U.S. law’s efficiency requirements, including oven and refrigerator bulbs, candelabra lamps, plant lights, replacement traffic signal bulbs and the summer necessity — the yellow bulb that doesn’t attract insects”.

Get a Fisher&Paykel. They’re from New Zealand, and can be purchased at either Lowes or Home Depot for a good price. They’re very water-efficient. I’m happy with mine — no problems whatsoever. They get great reviews. Check out epinions.com for example.

In the words of Lucy Van Pelt, “You’ve been dumb before Charlie Brown, but this time you really did it.”

Substitute “Republican Party” for “Charlie Brown” and you pretty much have my feelings on the issue.

Let me be clear now. The Republican Party has sold us all out when it comes to reasonable energy policy and is one of the serious reasons I’m considering leaving the party once and for all. Economic freedom has done more and will continue to do more (if allowed) to alleviate human suffering than any government mandate or do-gooder Marxist.

Bought 4 of these new bulbs on sale Sat. Wife put one in bathroom Monday morning. Monday night it was dead. Put another one in Monday night. So far, it is still working but it will need to work for 3 years to make up the difference in costs for 2 of these expensive bulbs.

...only dim bulbs will be empowered?
