Low-Key Thompson Stumbles Toward Finish Line
ABC ^ | 1/2/08 | Rick Klein

Posted on 01/02/2008 9:00:41 AM PST by pissant

Two days before the Iowa caucuses — day 15 of his 17-day "hands down" bus tour — former senator Fred Thompson's campaign bus stood motionless in the snowy parking lot of a West Des Moines motel, across from a movie theater and a suburban strip mall.

Thompson's campaign scheduled only one event for New Year's Day, a meet-and-greet at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, about an hour outside Des Moines. Thompson, R-Tenn., shunned the bus, emblazoned with his picture, for the relative comfort of a black Chevrolet Suburban.

(snip)

Thompson has staked his campaign's prospects to Iowa. In seeking to jump-start his campaign last month, he promised to crisscross the Hawkeye State with visits to 50 cities and towns in 17 days aboard his new campaign bus.

Paul can sound good. But does anyone think he can actully pull off the BS he says he wants to do??
Paul is a loose cannon. Maybe good in congress. But President, no thanks.

Paul has a fairly strong following that he’s developed over the years and they seemed to have rallied to his side this campaign. He’s didsplayed funding abilities and a loose knit organization that outshines many others including the 3rd parties, imo.

No I don’t think he’ll come anywhere near the nomination and he may have a fight on his hands in CD14 this time around. But he has enough funding to hang around for the duration even if it goes beyond Super Tuesday...

Paul has waxed stalwarts like Tancredo, Keyes, and Hunter all of whom he left in the dust sucking hind teat.

I like Fred a lot but he just seems quite tired is my first impression. And a stumble-talker when discussing issues unscripted. Both of these are very bad appearances for a presidential candidate.

Fred needs a B-12 shot and more sleep.

Only career politicians NEED a job.

BINGO!

I got out of media because I refused to dance to its tune -- I guess that's why I like Thompson.

I like Fred just fine. Nice guy. Now tell him to throw his support to the Reganite.

Dude, Duncan’s a great guy...and if he shows a better standing after tomorrow I might change my tune, but for all the talk about FRED not gaining traction then speaking of Hunter in the same breath?

Pot...kettle...

10:35 am
Fred Thompson does a live interview on “The Laura Ingraham Show”
11:45 am
Fred Thompson is a guest on Fox News’ “Happening Now”
1:50 pm
Fred Thompson meets with voters at event in Waterloo, Iowa
4:15 pm
Fred Thompson meets with voters at event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
6:00 pm
Fred Thompson does a live interview on “The Mark Levin Show.”

Jeri Thompson does a live interview on Fox News’s “On the Record with Great Van Susteren”

Funny how the media thinks one event on New Year is worth a whole article, but the above list doesn’t get a mention.

Actually not really, some is easily deduced. Like how much is Mitt going to cost the GOP in the long run, McCain as a liability, how to handle Huckabee and such.

This will go down to the wire, and it will be Fred, maybe Rudy and a possible candidate X. That is what I see down the road.

“I assume the faster Fred drops out, the faster his conservative supporters will back the other conservative in the race, like they should have from day one.”

You should never “assume.” Most I’ve spoken to are going to give their support to Mitt should the worst happen and Fred drops out.

Sort of funny in that someone else reported travelling with Thompson to over 30 stops that day.

Except that Duncan is much more likely to drop out before Fred, not the reverse.

Knew it would fall on dumb ears, as you defy every aspect of "logic".

I have the same stance in regard to Tancredo as you.

The rancor over these primaries I have seen here on FR has disturbed me greatly, most especially because it started so far in advance.

That’s why I’m supporting Fred. If I thought Duncan had a snowball’s chance in July I’d send my donations his way, but he doesn’t and now it’s time to put up or shut up so I’m putting my money on Thompson.

Wow, you make Duncan look bad. Duncan should ask you to back down as you are making them all look bad. In fact, you may be the reason he never caught on in the first place.
