As Campaign Season Begins, Only One Candidate is Viewed Favorably by Majority of Voters
Rassmussen Reports ^ | January 02, 2008

One impact of the long run-up to Election 2008 can be seen in public perceptions of the leading Presidential candidates. After a year of campaigning with no votes actually being cast, only one candidate in either party is now viewed favorably by more than half the nation’s voters. Stunningly, especially given the status of his campaign six months ago, that candidate is John McCain. This is one reason why a recent article noted it is a good time to be John McCain.

The Arizona Senator is now viewed favorably by 53% of all voters (a total boosted by the fact that 56% of those not affiliated with the major parties have a positive opinion of him. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of voters nationwide have an unfavorable opinion of him. Last summer, following the Senate debate on immigration, McCain’s stock had sunk so low that he was viewed favorably by fewer than half the voters in his home state. But, he has recovered in the latest Arizona polling as well as nationally. John Edwards is viewed favorably by 49%, unfavorably by 42% and Hillary Clinton is the only other candidate with favorables about 43%. She is viewed favorably by 48% of all voters and unfavorably by 50%. Attitudes about the former First Lady are held more firmly than those for other candidates.

Barack Obama earns favorable reviews from 43%, Fred Thompson from 42%, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani from 40%. Mitt Romney has the lowest total at 38%. Fifty-one percent (51%) have an unfavorable opinion of the former Massachusetts Governor. That unfavorable rating is matched by Obama and topped only by Giuliani at 55%.

Of course, entering the Primary season, it may be that opinions within the partisan ranks matter more than the overall numbers. McCain is viewed favorably by 66% of Republican voters nationwide, Thompson and Giuliani are viewed favorably by 65%, Romney by 57%, and Huckabee by 55%. Among Democrats, Clinton is viewed favorably by 80% of Democratic voters, Edwards by 66%, and Obama by 61%.

These figures are updated on a regular basis by Rasmussen Reports along with other key stats for all Republican and Democratic Presidential candidates.

Rasmussen Reports also provides a daily Presidential Tracking Poll updated at 11:00 Eastern each morning.

McCain is viewed favorably by 66% of Republican voters nationwide...

Personally, I find it very difficult to believe that this number is accurate.

I am outraged! Outraged I say, that McCain shafted Constitutionalist judicial nominees, and then tried to push amnesty on us, and then ... hey, is that a football game on? I hope American Idol doesn’t get pre-empted. What were we talking about again?

His resume looks good in comparison to everyone else’s resume, to voters, which is a commentary on the other candidates as much as on McCain. There’s also a “McCain can beat Hillary” school of thought bubbling right now.

I have said it for a while now... McCain’s the dark horse in this race... if the top tier falter, he’s going to be the one to benefit... keep an eye on him.

I am definitely in the 47% per cent category.

I will write in Duncan Hunter rather than vote for McPain.

I respect John because of his military service but why would anybody in their right mind want to get into poliics. The reward for the brightest and best minds in this country running for office to try to make America better would be to have your whole life, family, and future ripped apart and destroyed like you were some kind of mass murderer or child molestor. This is how sick politics and it particular “the two party system has become”. We have had two corrupt families (Clintons & Bushes) running this corrupt country (and our lives) for the last 25 years. I dont know about you but I’ve had enough of all of them.

Exactly. The Drive-Bys wanted Huckabee, because he would be an easy win for Hillary. However, he proved too dumb for even them. So it’s back to McCain, whom they probably think would be a Bob Dole to Hillary’s Bill Clinton.

They will work overtime to shove McCain down our throats. Their goal is to have McCain go against Hillary in the general election. Once McCain is nominated, his breathless admirers in the MSM will (on cue) turn on him like rabid dogs. They will show him no mercy as they bring out the Keating Five, his temper, his age, his philandering & divorce, and even the “confession” he signed (after being tortured) as a POW.

Does McCain have a compelling story? Yes, he does. It was heroic of him to refuse release as a POW until all were released. However, that by itself is not a reason to nominate him. His grandfather and father were both Admirals—even with that pedigree and his POW experiences, he still did not make flag rank. I’m sure the Navy had its reasons and they WILL come out. He is a flawed candidate with a lot of problems.

McCain is great, so long as you don’t care for the First Amendment (CFR), nor the Second Amendment (Gun show “loophole” bill), nor American sovreignty (Shamnesty), nor a host of other things. But, other than that, he’s just great.
