Thompson finance chair signs on with McCain (McC hopes to get endorsement from Fred)
Austin American Statesman ^ | Jan. 24, 2008 | Ken Herman

Scooter Clippard, who spent the past few months trying to get folks to open their wallet for Fred Thompson's ill-fated presidential campaign, now is dialing for dollars for John McCain.

Clippard, former national fundraising chairman for Thompson, is now national finance co-chair for McCain. The move came two days after Thompson shut down his campaign.

Says McCain, who hopes to get an endorsement from Thompson, "We are honored to have a key leader from my friend Fred Thompson's campaign. Fred made an invaluable contribution to this race and always enriched the discussion of ideas for America's future."

Fred Thompson was national co-chair of the McCain campaign, when he was running against GW Bush. Thompson also did some fundraising for McCain in 2007, before he started to flirt with the idea of running for president.

It was Howard Baker, a big McCain supporter, who started to originally push the idea of Fred running. Fred being in the race in the early states helped McCain win.

Or so the plan went.

In reality, Fred’s people went to Romney.

No — it’s more like proof that the Fred Thompson candidacy was never about Fred, but about helping McCain. Fred has a long history with McCain, he was co-chair of McC’s campaing in 2000, and Baker, a big McCain supporter recruited Fred to run. Maybe those who said, that it was all about splitting the conservatives, than push them into the McCain camp were right all along.

“I have no dog in this race.”

“All that it necessary for evil to succeed is for good man to do nothing” — or something like that.

Are you going to stand by and just watch Hillary or Obama take over the country?

Fred's endorsement in 2000 precedes McCain's actions since then.

Maybe those who said, that it was all about splitting the conservatives, than push them into the McCain camp were right all along.

There is no evidence of this. McCain, Huckabee, Giuliani and Romney are not conservatives. You cannot split something when you are virtually the only only one in the race who was conservative (Hunter & Tancredo - who were going no where - excepted).

It is Huckabee not Thompson who is splitting the conservative vote. He is also the shill for McCain since he does draw votes from other (partial) conservatives. This may not be a matter of intention but is is the effect. If Huckabee were not in the race, Thompson might well have won both Iowa and SC.

Thompson has endorsed no one, I doubt he will do so with the exception of the party nominee.

Fred has an excellent chance to actually get the nomination, if he had gotten in the race in July, when everyone was clammoring for him, instead, he sat on the sidelines. He still had a chance, if he had “hit the ground running” when he got in, but he didn’t do that either. He hardly campaigned, did just enough to help McCain win in S. Carolina, than he gave up. I personally don’t like being played for a sucker, I don’t know about the rest of you.

If Fred were in the race campaigning vigorously, that would be the best refutation of the rumors that his only purpose was to help McCain — but his actions just support those notions, not refute them.

Says McCain, who hopes to get an endorsement from Thompson,...

There is no indication that Fred will endorse McCain although I'm sure some will misquote that.

If Fred does endorse McCain I will lose all respect for him just like Duncan Hunter endorsing Mike Huckabee.

"Are you going to stand by and just watch Hillary or Obama take over the country?"

Don't know where you live or which party you're affiliated with, but their names are not on my primary ballot.

Other than that, those Republicans who failed to support a conservative nominee may very well have doomed us to another Clinton presidency. McCain vs Hillary is a sure loser. Huckabee would get the Evangelicals and the broken glass Republicans, but doubt fiscal or security conservatives will be very enthusiastic. Giuliani loses the bible belt and loses the election. Romney? Who knows? Lots of flip flops and doubts. Not sure on life, gays, guns, borders or anything else. RomneyCare is a big government negative. Lots of Evangelicals may stay home.

Consider this: If Fred had stayed in after SC, who did he help? None other than McCain. The best endorsement/help he could have given McCain would have been to remain in the race.

There’s no reasonable reason why. He’s on enough ballots to win, and he’s the only conservative left. It’s either him or a stinking RINO.
