this book makes clear that Reagan, if anything, is under-appreciated for his vision, skill, and tenacity.

He is not under-appreciated at all. Half of us fully appreciate his talent and single mindedness of vision when he decided that the communists were on the losing side of history and held to it. The other half of hate him for it. [Note to the obsessive compulsive literalists around here - half means a division into two groups and is not here meant in the mathematical sense of two precisely equal portions].

It’s my party and I can cry if I want to.

We had Duncan Hunter, the next best thing to Ronald Reagan. But some very wise FReepers put a lot of energy into pointing out he wasn't very well known.

Then we had Fred Thompson (AKA Hunter-Lite, but acceptable). He dropped out.

Everything that's left looks like GOP-Jimmuh Carter Wannabees.

Cool site! I’ve only been able to pick up a few (takes awhile to download and I have trouble with one plug in). I wish it said a little more about each one. One I listened to someone was trying to turn off his mic, the crowd starts booing and he says “I paid for this mic” and the crowd starts cheering. He was governor then but I’m curious about the circumstances. But I liked that about him and I liked that about Fred Thompson, a man of Presidential material should not be bullied by the media.

I saw another one of him telling a funny story. He had it all, a good storyteller, easy to listen to. The great communicator.

Yes, he was a man of principle. When he opened his mouth, you knew he was speaking the truth. You could count on it.

Not so, with politicians, today. When they open their mouth, you know it's going to be fabricated, it will be only what the people want to hear, or what they think will be best for the 'sheeple'.

It seems like a million years ago when he was president.

Bush/Clinton/Bush have destroyed a great many things that Reagan was able to accomplish for this country.

And, the cycle may not be over, yet. (If the rumor that Romney may chose Jeb for VP is true.)

I hope this is a horrible rumor. No more Clintons, no more Bush's!! I'm sick of both dynasty's.

Reagan may be dead, but is words and wisdom live on.

In your search of Reagan quotes, have you ever come across the one given in response to America being in decline where Reagan says that America has only begun to fulfill its destiny? I have been looking for this one.

Early in his California governorship Reagan signed a permissive abortion bill that has resulted in more than a million abortions

And then, as well all know, he changed to a harder stance on the national stage. Just remember that when you're looking at the current crop of candidates and what they are saying about abortion.

Reagan never changed his position on abortion. He has always been against it.

But, nice attempt at trying to rewrite history.

Perhaps you should read Reagan's own words. Here are some from Reagan: A Life In Letters -- Read pages 197-198.

October 11, 1979, Letter to Mr. Robert L. Mauro:

Dear Mr. Mauro:

I hope you won't mind my writing you about a recent column of yours suggesting that I might be preparing to abandon my anti-abortion position and that I signed a permissive abortion bill while I was governor. I think there are things I should make plain here.

First, my position is that interrupting a pregnancy means the taking of a human life. In our Judeo-Christian tradition, that can only be done in self-defense. Therefore, I will agree to an abortion only to protect the life of the prospective mother.

Now, with regard to the permissive bill I supposedly signed, let me give you the correct history of what took place early in my term as governor. A bill was introduced that was permissive, indeed abortion on demand. Naturally, there was great controversy about this bill. The author finally sent word that he would amend his bill to anything the governor thought he could sign. Faced with this responsibility, I probably did more study and more soul searching on the subject than I had done on anything in my eight years as governor. I came to the conclusion, as I have already stated, that it could only be justified to save a human life. . . . Perhaps it was my inexperience in government, but like so many pieces of legislation, there were loopholes that I had not seen, and the thing that made the California abortion bill become somewhat permissive in nature was violation of the spirit of the legislation by the very groups who were supposed to police it. This was particularly true in the case of psychiatrists. If faced with the same problem today, I can assure you I would make sure there were no loopholes in the bill. Indeed, I have already written Congressman Hyde telling him of my support for his amendment.

Again, please rest assured there is no way I could or would change my position with regard to my opposition to the permissive abortion that is taking place throughout our land.

Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

"Abraham Lincoln recognized that we could not survive as a free land when some men could decide that others were not fit to be free and should therefore be slaves. Likewise, we cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide. My Administration is dedicated to the preservation of America as a free land, and there is no cause more important for preserving that freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have any meaning." - Ronald Reagan, 1983

I love the selective forgiveness of you people...yes, he was against it personally, but he SIGNED A PERMISSIVE ABORTION BILL WHILE HE WAS GOVERNOR...It says it in this passage you just sent me...

I know Reagan was against it, morally..but as Governor of the state of California he CHOSE to do something that went against his beliefs because at the time he thought it was the right thing to do. Do you disagree with any of that?

Now, what I'm saying, is that I don't see the same forgiveness of some of the current crop of candidates as you extended to Reagan..THAT'S ALL.

If Guiliani or Romney or anyone said that they didn't know about the LOOPHOLES of a piece of legislation they signed, you would laugh your asses off. I'm just trying to put everything into it's proper perspective instead of romanticizing a past we can never recapture...at least in the foreseeable future.

Do you NOT understand the above???? THAT is what he signed. Not something you claim, and he certainly DID NOT CHANGE HIS MIND or position on abortion....unlike Romney.
