I sure miss him!!!
Yeah, me too. Seems like he had it all. Small government, strong defense and a great sense of humor, knew how to handle the press.
This is one of my favorites during the second debate:
REPORTER: Mr. President, I want to raise an issue that I think has been lurking out there for two or three weeks, and cast it specifically in national security terms. You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that President Kennedy, who had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuba missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?
REAGAN: Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent’s youth and inexperience....
One of my favorite Reagan quotes was not by him, but rather by his older brother Neil.
Shortly after the 1980 election Neil Reagan was questioned by a reporter who asked him what he planned to do now that his brother Ron had won the presidency.
"I plan to get lost," he replied.
Bet Jimmy Carter wished his brother had said the same thing!
We are there.
I loved President Reagan's response to the assertion he was an actor. He said, "I'm not an actor and I have thirty movies to prove it.
Yep, that’s kind of what was making me so discouraged. I actually looked up Obama’s website and his views on the issues. I fear he may be the next President.
Beats Hillary.
I liked that too, I almost posted that one. The man had a great sense of humor.
So nice to read these. I am reading RR’s Diaries right now. Good, good book!
Some for their own gain and some because they are altruistic, blind socialists.
Never-the-less, they'll all ruin america.
Even the alledged conservatives.
Yes. He had a deprecating sense of humor too, which I like. He didn't take himself too seriously. The closest to him lately in politics has been Thompson. But people didn't appreciate it or understand it. Maybe it's just the times. Or, maybe it was just Thompson's delivery.
Gosh, but I miss Reagan.
I hate to crash your party, but this kind of thing is what is destroying us...REAGAN IS GONE...living in the past does nobody good. I take that back, it’s great for the Democrats..What would Ronald Reagan say? Do you think he’d say if the candidate isn’t purely conservative don’t vote for him..let the libs takeover for 8 years and THEN we’ll regroup? Do you really think that’s what he would say?
You sound like me because I’m missing Thompson too. Don’t know what the problem was that he never took off like he should. There is always that talk of who was most “Reaganesque”, hands down, he was the one. Perhaps it’s the American people who have changed.
It’s my party and I can cry if I want to.
To post a serious response, he might say "I didn't leave the party, the party left me".
“I think I enjoyed his humor as much as his ideals...”
I also missed his vision... One of my favorite quotes was this one... “
If you’re afraid of the future, then get out of the way, and stand aside. The people of this country are ready to move again...”
Amen Hildy!! He would have condemned that type of thinking. Reagan knew #1) You have to get elected first to attempt to implement ANY of your positions. #2) He was a pragmatist and believed in making compromises to get SOME of what he wanted, coming back later to try to get the rest. The "all-or-nothing" mentality almost always gets NOTHING.
Agreed! And I’d almost guarantee the one thing it will get the Republican party, is DEFEATED!
