I don't agree with this assessment (some of the criticisms of which, he does cite), but food for thought.

“Mr. McCain bruised his standing with conservatives on the issue when in 2005 he became a key player in the so-called gang of 14, which derailed an effort to end Democratic filibusters of Bush judicial nominees. More recently, Mr. McCain has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito, because “he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.”

Republicans had the majority, they should have used the nuclear option early. To paraphrase from Mdm. Pilosi “that’s what happens when you win elections.”

...Conservatives should thank John McCain and the other Senators who were part of the Gang of 14...

Thank you very much, you provided my answer. I don't want to belong to any party /organization that think like you do! Which means, if you are a 'conservative,' then, I don't want to be one!

There is a principle here more important to me than any other: LOYALTY. I could never TRUST anyone who pretends to be one of ours, but in pratice is nothing else than a surrogate for the other side.

Glad to see them catching up with what I posted last December:

“I’d also note Mccain didn’t stop Bush from getting his judges. That was at a total impasse before Mccain and others acted to prevent the republicans from stupidly jumping off a cliff without a parachute by using the nuke option. Only after that did Bush nominees begin to again pass the senate. No Gang of 14, no Roberts and Alito.

Had the nuke option passed, the dems today would have nothing to prevent them from doing as they wished. The last year would have been very different.”

IMO, it’s big-time toilet bowl time for our country, our futures, our security, and our freedoms as they are about to be flushed. Pathetically, our ancestors are turning in their graves at this disgraceful election. The duped American people have been brainwashed thanks to Liberals and the MSM. Unfortunately, it’s going to get very very bad before anyone wakes up. Pray for all of us, our children, and grandchildren. Hopefully, we can turn it around once the American people realize they’ve been brainwashed and lied to.

thank John McCain for preserving for the Republican Party the use of the filibuster on judicial nominations that might be made by a Democratic President beginning in 2009 or later

Sure as heck, that was Big John's intent from the very beginning......../sarc

McCain has been stabbing conservatives in the back for years. Now he wants our support? I can’t say what I’d like to say, in polite company here, but suffice to say all I can muster is one long stream of curse words - many of them new and original and which I have invented just for McLame.

You can be certain that McCain did not do it to help the conservatives. He’s not a conservative.

This piece is filled with half truths and leftist propaganda. The Gang of Fourteen let a handful of judges through the system while preserving the leftist tools to block conservative judiciary nominees. Thanks to McCain, most of these conservative nominees still sink in the quagmire.

Some of the nominees were appointed three years ago! Frist was going nuclear and the leftists were scared. Backstabbing McCain didn’t want conservative justices so he came to the leftists rescue. He threw Bush a bone, gave the conservatives the finger, and preserved the leftists obstruction. To date one third of the judgeships on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals are VACANT! The credit is all due McCain!

President Bush did not applaud MacCain over getting judicial appointments through that house of LORDS... he said there was a LONG list of appellate vacancies waiting for even up or down votes....

There are toooo many purveyors of deceit and deception to number these day.

These outfits can make all the excuses they want for McCain.

He ain't my candidate and the party that nominates this traitorous bastard is no longer my party.

Talk all you want about keeping Hillary or Obama out, but I don't see any benefit to ruining what's left of the country under the guise of pretending to be conservative. Ruin is Ruin. Let the liberals have the credit for it because the result is the same.

The GOP nominates this man for President and my entire family will change our registration from GOP to independent.

Anyone that thinks the Republican Senators will filibuster an ultra-liberal judge is just whistling in the wind.

The RINOS will cave in and let the judges go to a vote.

This writer is caught up in the appeasment strategy of John McCain.

This guy has been reading my posts. The “Gang of Fourteen” was a masterpiece.
The rats never knew what hit them.

That said, McCain is still a Democrat scumbag and there are no vice grips in the world strong enough to put on my nose so I could ever vote for him.

I used to hate McCain for this Gang of 14 nonsense, but in light of how poorly Bush has performed in his second term, and the whole Harriet Myers fiasco, I've had some second thoughts.

In my opinion, McCain will be no worse than Bush--hopefully, a lot better.
