Will California Buy Romney Time to Stay in the Race?
National Review ^ | February 4, 2008 | Bryon York

Last-minute polls send both candidates scrambling to the Golden State.

By Byron York

Phoenix, Ariz. — Since John McCain’s win in Florida, the conventional wisdom has been that he has nearly locked up the Republican presidential nomination. But now, just hours before Super Tuesday voting begins, a new factor has entered the equation: California. Polls, both public and those taken privately by the Romney campaign, show Mitt Romney with unexpected strength in the nation’s biggest state, sending both Romney and McCain rushing to make unscheduled stops there on Monday night and Tuesday. If Romney could win California, people in both campaigns say, the race could go on for several more weeks. And if that happens, conservatives who are trying to organize to stop McCain would have more time to work. At this late moment, California means everything.

A Reuters/C-Span/Zogby poll, finished Sunday, shows Romney leading McCain in California, 40 percent to 32 percent. A Rasmussen poll, finished Saturday, shows the two candidates tied at 38 percent. Other polls, taken before February first, showed McCain in the lead, sometimes by a substantial margin...[edit]

The criticsms against him are weak and personal.

Immigration reform and universal health care are weak and personal ?

Let me ask. You do know that you're on a conservative forum?

One can only hope. He's a shining example that our capitalistic system and opportunity for prosperity actually works in our fine country.

That’s a great story!!!! I enjoy hearing him talk. No humming and hawing... no vocalized pauses... He speak straight and with conviction. He’s the kind of guy whose company you’d like to work for. I see some great things happening with him. He’s intelligent and seems to be a good communicator with those who may be on the other side of the aisle.

Have you seen McCain lately. He looks like some old tired out hobo with clothes that don’t fit him..

From Rush today:

RUSH: ...I think the one candidate of the three still out there on our side matter (and actually it's just two, because Huckabee doesn't, in terms of a chance to win) in saying who more closely embodies all three legs of this conservative stool, you'd have to say that it's Mitt Romney. There's actually no choice in the matter. It certainly isn't Senator McCain.

“At this late moment, California means everything.”

There we have it. Zogby has Mitt up 8 points.

Is it a real lead or is it Zogby’s Special Sauce? I thought Zogby brings out the Special Sauce for the Dim candidates. I guess we shall see.

“Romney will definitely get the gay vote”

Big McCain supporter, arn’t you? You’re reaction to the news of Romney gaining in CA, sounds very close to what McCain himself said, when told the news.

For now, he does. However, that will change once he gets the nomination and toss conservatives aside like he did in Mass.

Sure, Rush... Romney is an excellent "conservative stool" specimen. Just keep ignoring his record before he decided he wanted to be Prez.

Big strawman supporter, aren't you. Not everybody who dares to criticize Saint Romney on a conservative forum is automatically in bed with McCain.

More from Byron: “Everyone’s pumping money in, everywhere,” a second Romney adviser tells me. “What’s happening is like what happened in Maine. When it’s down to two men....the decision gets easier and easier.”

If it goes like Maine (which was a big surprise) Mitt is home free.

Did you make that thread boasting Mitt will only win Utah and maybe Colorado? I may have missed it.

He promises to do better this time. McAmnesty promises very little change to his goal of destroying the Party on a national level, he wants to continue the destructive policies of the past.... Thats the difference

Is it a real lead or is it Zogby’s Special Sauce? I thought Zogby brings out the Special Sauce for the Dim candidates.

Zogby had McCain up by 1 in Michigan, and Romney won by nine. Zogby correctly called the late trend for McCain in Florida. Zogby has been the most accurate pollster in the Primary season, and he hasn't favored Romney. So, if Zogby has Romney trending up in California, it probably is because Romney is up.

The latest Zogby poll:

California - Republicans

Republicans

2/1-3

1/31-2-2

Romney

40%

37%

McCain

32%

34%

Huckabee

12%

12%

Paul

5%

5%

Someone else

4%

Undecided

8%

7%

Romney’s California lead over McCain grew by three points over the previous tracking poll, to 40% support in this important winner-take-all state, compared to McCain’s 32%, a two-point loss from the day before. Romney did well among conservative voters here, with 46% of their support, compared to McCain’s 29%. That group made up more than half the sample. The survey included 915 likely voters and carried a margin of error of +/- 3.3 points.

Are you still trying to pretend this post, with which for several days you've festooned every thread with Romney in the title, is anything beside spam?
