Grateful Dead Grateful for Obama (Truckin, down a dead end street)

The remaining members of the Grateful Dead — probably the most prolific and enduring psychedelic rock band — have gotten together once again, but this time to endorse Barack Obama for president.

The usually apolitical group waded into the presidential campaign Monday in a press conference and a concert that melded the old with the new. The show began with a recorded video message by Obama in which he thanked the members of the band for their support. A fog of marijuana hung over the crowd, the Reuters news agency reported.

Well I guess that pretty much means Ann Coulter is going to vote for Obama if McCain is the nominee.

“But when it came to leading the multitudes, Garcia was unambiguous: “Our trip was never to go out and change the world. I mean, what would we change it to? Whatever we did would probably be worse than the way it is now.”

Actually, Obama voters should ask themselves the same thing.

He’s the candidate of “change” but what does he want to change America TO?

'dude this music totally sucks'

In the land of the night, the Ship of the Sun is driven across the sky by the Grateful Dead.

Oh, gag me. Only reason I used to like the dead was they kept their opinions to themselves about things like this.

I don’t care abotu that kind of music and stuff anymore, but those of us who did used to enjoy them never gave a hoot what anybody else thought. Well, maybe we were a LITTLE bit defensive about it.

I think you have to admit that the Dead were one of the most bizarre social phenomenons for the last 50 years. I mean, large numbers of chronological adults following around a few barely literate stoners who get ripped and try to play the same five B-material songs night after night? If that’s not bizarre then,
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

I can only hope that some rough beast is slouching toward Bethlehem to be born. What I think we will get instead is dreck and more dreck.

The world is waiting with bated breath to see who will get the all-important String Cheese Incident endorsement.

String Cheese Incident endorsement.

My guess would be the same as Dave Matthews endorses...

I always thought this band was totally lame! And now, they continue to be lame!

What does one DeadHead say to another DeadHead if they both accidentally sober up?

"Man, this band sucks!"

“Houston...too close to New Orleans
New York...got the ways and means
they just wont let you be.
Sittin and starin out of the hotel window.
Got a tip theyre gonna kick the door in again
Id like to get some sleep before I travel,
But if you got a warrant, I guess youre gonna come in.

Busted, down on bourbon street, set up, like a bowlin pin.
Knocked down, it gets to wearin thin. they just wont let you be, oh no.”

Truckin lyrics

Grateful Dead got busted in New Orleans and never went back.

Bob Weir in an interview on "The Grateful Dead Hour" radio program last year:

The only difference between George Bush and Hitler, is that Hitler was actually elected."

I never really liked them as a band, but their outdoor concerts were fun. Last I saw them was in Columbia MD in the mid to late 80’s and I will never forget the trip.

I saw over 100 shows back in the 80's and early 90's, and had a blast. I was an on-the-road drummer myself at the time. What can I say ...... I partied bigtime, and I enjoyed it. Even though I don't share the same political or social philosophies now as the musicians themselves, I still consider myself a Deadhead. We still crank up old shows on the weekends at home. Can't say that I agree with their little endorsement, but that's the beauty of America. I doubt if Jerry were still around that he'd be doing this. He was a real anti-politically active guy.

This is from a show at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin in '87. Me(on the right) with my (late)girlfriend from at the time.
