Where are the armed Marines?

Protecting embassy personnel in a different area. I would be willing to bet the decision was made way up the chain to just back off, let them tear up a few things and feel like they accomplished something.

Chances are, as others have said, they were being stirred up by somebody who wanted a NATO member to start shooting.

The protester’s probably didn’t look threatening or they’d be dead. More likely they were just escorted out.
