The pool cue can be mightier than the gun.
That seemed to be the message sent by patrons of a San Francisco pool hall Friday night when they disarmed an alleged would-be robber.
San Francisco police said Mario K. Woods, 18, entered the crowded Billiard Palacade in the Outer Mission shortly after 10 p.m. and allegedly attempted to rob a patron at gunpoint in the bathroom.
But the patron - a "carambolero," or player of a three-ball form of billiards called carambole - wrestled with his assailant, according to pool hall owner Mirna Batres. The patron's brother and cousin came to his aid.
"They brought him out and somebody else grabbed the gun," said Batres, who wasn't present during the robbery attempt but watched it afterward on a security videotape. "Then my patrons got involved and said, 'Not in our pool room.' "
Dozens of players picked up their cue sticks and crowded around the alleged robber, pushing him toward the front door.
Then one player recognized the assailant as the same person who had robbed him in January at the pool hall - the first on-site robbery in the nearly 30-year history of the Billiard Palacade, according to Batres.
"Someone said, 'Hey, he's the one who was here before,' and everything went crazy," Batres said. "They took a cue stick to his head and someone popped him one."
The alleged would-be robber jumped into a waiting car driven by an accomplice and sped off, police said. The Palacade's patrons flagged down a passing Daly City police car, which had been on its way to the Cow Palace, and the officers gave chase.

A surprisingly good story from San Francisco.
I would imagine free pool and free beer for that night.
Altamont?
Didn't the Hells Angels kill a cuy with pool cue because he was naked and ugly
Thought you’d enjoy this. At the end of the article it says that, after a brief chase, the two suspects were taken into custody.
I guess he couldn’t take a cue.
Hint: In San Francisco don’t rob a straight business establishment in an ethnic neighborhood that is not your own. You tend to stand out and be remembered.
“Latin” in this case probably means El Salvadoran. Some of the guys, in their younger commie days were probably FMLN.
Nice touch.
Now that’s funny.
“Didn’t the Hells Angels kill a cuy with pool cue because he was naked and ugly”
No. He had a gun. See The Rolling Stones’ movie “Gimme Shelter”.
SAN FRAN TO BAN POOL CUES
