America's shame 1: Video captures grinning U.S. Marine throwing yelping puppy off cliff in Iraq

Last updated at 13:49pm on 4th March 2008

The U.S. military are investigating a shocking video of a smiling Marine throwing a puppy off the top of a steep hillside in Iraq into a gully below.

The video gained widespread attention and condemnation after appearing on the web site YouTube, where it has been viewed over 8,000 times.

The footage shows two Marines, in combat gear and smiling, as one holds a white-and-black puppy by the scruff of its neck.

The small dog seems to be about eight weeks old and is motionless as it is held.

"Cute little puppy, huh?" says one Marine as he smiles broadly.

"Oh so cute, so cute, little puppy," says another in a child-like voice.

The Marine holding the puppy then turns and hurls the animal overhand into a desert-like gully below.

The puppy can be heard yelping in terror until it thuds to the ground at the bottom of the gully.

"That's mean," one Marine says after, in a sickening understatement.

"The video is shocking and deplorable and is contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine," a spokesperson revealed.

Marine spokesman Major Chris Perrine believed the culprit is based in Hawaii.

"We do not tolerate this type of behaviour and will take appropriate action," he said.

The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment of about 1,000 Hawaii Marines recently replaced a sister unit in Iraq, the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii said the vast majority of Marines "conduct their duties in an honourable manner that brings great credit upon the Marine Corps and the United States."

"There have been numerous stories of Marines adopting pets and bringing them home from Iraq or helping to arrange life-saving medical care for Iraqi children," said Major Chris Perrine.

"Those are the stories that exemplify what we stand for and how most Marines behave."

“Can you give us a link to the video that mentions a name?”

The video that started this thread gives his name, the post of mine that you are responding to mentions that name, and the link in post 39 gives the name and opens up a gateway to internet links and photos on the Marine.

When did Mike Huckabee’s son join the Marines?

I think the original poster meant you get some leftist pretenders, dress them up a best you can, and head out into the desert sections of SoCal to stage your film. Areas between LA and LV up to Death Valley look a lot like some outer areas of Iraq.

I think the reference was to the geography of SoCal, not the people...

given the number of times the left has faked pictues and videos, we have good grounds to not believe this.

Remember when the Drive By Media had a GI Joe DOLL as an american soldier held hostage?

How many fake soldiers have been at protest rallys?

We have every reason to not believe this.

Of course it does not matter because the propaganda damage is already done.

Whether it is “fake” or not the idea to be sadistic is unacceptable. It doesn’t matter to me if the person is in a uniform or part of some street gang, using a stuffed puppy - they are GUILTY of laughing and engaging in cruelty. Cruelty is not “funny”. Cruelty is not acceptable. I dont’ know why you are looking to split hairs over this and make it acceptable ... .

You must not have a child then. Once you have a child, you will realize the relative importance of your human child versus a pet.

Not all of them do. Arabs often hunt game with Salukis.

Many AKC-recognized breeds come from the Mideast region. Basenjis, Salukis, Afghan Hounds, Greyhounds, etc.

We don’t know if it was faked.

YOU keep preaching that.

No, I’m not “played like a fiddle”. As you also admitted it is SADISTIC. I react to SADISTIC people.

I don’t follow your “logic”. How will

“some soldier somewhere is going to be killed in the name of puppies “?

We are not talking about OTHER soldiers. We are talking about the TWO in the video. Other soldiers won’t ne killed because of this puppy. Most people don’t BROADBRUSH incidents and color the entire military with an incident. Atleast we don’t. Perhaps you need to straighten out others who do BROADBRUSH the military for the actions of two.

Fake.

The yelping sound is obviously fake, and the puppy doesn’t move at all or make a sound when he is being held up or while he is airborne.

The “soldiers” display no unit insignia or rank that I can see, and no weapons are visible. Uniforms are the older BDUs, not the new Marine issue.

If you listen carefully, you can hear a dog barking in the background. I think that the reason the camera angle is so tight is to make it difficult to see where the film was shot... like out behind someone’s house. The quality is poor, sugesting it may have been shot with a cell phone. If that is the case (and if the film is to be accepted as the real thing, as purported), what were soldiers doing with a cell phone while on patrol in a combat zone?

This stinks.

Excuse me? My father, God rest his soul, flew B-17’s in WWII from February 1944 to the end. He flew 30 missions over the Reich and saw his friends shot down and blown up. Their formations dropped thousands of tons of bombs.

He never elicited any bloodthirsty tendencies afterwards. In fact he was one of the most even-tempered and unflappable guys I’ve ever known.

This is just excuse-making on your part. The military is supposed to instill discipline in the ranks to keep this sort of thing from happening. Obviously, if true, these two imbeciles fell through the cracks.

But attempting to mitigate such behavior as a result of what they may or may not have been through is as specious as liberal defense attorneys claiming some dirtbag’s poverty, race, or “mommy didn’t love him enough” BS justifies his client’s heinous depredations.

Even if it's a toy, you think it's cruel? You can't be cruel to a toy anymore than you can be cruel to a brick.

You can make a dumb inappropriate joke with a toy, but you can't be cruel to it.

The “yelping puppy” sounds just like a squeeze toy sold in any of millions of pet stores.
