Oregon man's property ransacked after Craigslist hoax

Monday, March 24, 2008

Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Ore. -- A pair of hoax ads on Craigslist cost an Oregon man much of what he owned.

The ads popped up Saturday afternoon, saying the owner of a Jacksonville home was forced to leave the area suddenly and his belongings, including a horse, were free for the taking, said Jackson County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Colin Fagan.

But Robert Salisbury had no plans to leave. The independent contractor was at Emigrant Lake when he got a call from a woman who had stopped by his house to claim his horse.

This has been happening with greater frequency lately. Craig’s List needs to wise up.

Above all else, the greedy people who showed up at his house need to be prosecuted for theft and trespassing.

If you read an ad like that, wouldn’t you immediately call the police?

Hoax?

Sounds more like a crime.
It could be an ad placed by the 1st burglar to provide cover.

CL should be held culpible to a degree. They cannot make money from ads without sharing any responsibility whatsoever.

In the fifties a friend of my father hired a crew of demolishers to remove a frame house and it’s furnishings while the owners were out of town.

When the owners returned to that address there was only a bare, dirt patch in the middle of a grass lot.

They’d have to be pretty dumb to use a traceable address. That would be like calling from their own phone.

"They’d have to be pretty dumb to use a traceable address. That would be like calling from their own phone."

Or text messaging a high-class prostitution ring to arrange for a hooker to be delivered to your hotel room in Washington D.C. from New York.

Craigs list is a pretty simple thing. And it is free except for the employment section. It doesn’t even have popups or banners.

Frankly, making Craigslist responsible is like making Glock responsible for the robbery of a liquor store when the perp used a Glock.

The main criminal is the one that ran the ad. That person should be prosecuted. But the people that took property are also culpible. After all, would you just walk onto someones property and take their horse becase an ad in the paper said that anything on the property was free for the taking? Would you not want to talk to a human being and maybe even get something in writing as well? I certainly would.

This is actually pretty black and white. The owner of the property is the victim of the guy that wrote the ad and those that took property without permission (stole it). Neither Craigslist nor the owner of the road on which people drove to his property share any responsibility whatsoever.

It is akin to shouting “Fire” in a crowded theater falsely.

It is inciting a riot and fraud.
